Summary: Life is too short for hate
Review: Hate... Hate and love are the two most powerful emotions in the world. The two of these emotions can be taken too extremes, and when they do, very powerful events can happen. In American History X, the feeling of hate is overwhelming. Derrick radiates this hate to all that surrounds him. He holds this rage inside, and lets it consume his life. He is so blinded by his hate that he does not take the time to see all sides of the story. The death of his father just seemed to justify thoughts that were already implanted in his head. American History X, shows this powerful emotion of hate like no other movie has been able to do. The reality and no nonsense presentation of the movie are what touches each person so deeply. To capture the essence of hate is a very powerful thing. The movie was able to capture the idea that hate can take over and run your life. You become blind to what you are actually doing, and become desensitized to all other human emotions.

Summary: "...the better angels of our nature"
Review: Absorbing tale of neo-fascism in Venice Beach,California and its harmful effects on two close knit brothers Derek & Danny.The story opens with Dereks release from prison after 3 years for the brutal slaying of a black teenager attempting to steal his car.This flashback scene is not for the faint-hearted. Within the stark reality of the prison walls and confronted with the hypocrisy of fellow idealogical inmates he had thought to rely on Derek eventually reaches his epiphany.All is not as he has once thought.He comes out determined to set his life straight,starting with his family and especially his impressionable younger brother Danny.Enough said.This is a disturbing tale which i found totally engrossing.I especially liked the flashback scenes in black & white which works quite well here.To those two Edwardians Furlong & Norton must go much of the credit for what would otherwise have been just another ethnic gang related story. Many critics have been scathing of the one dimensional supporting characters,Nortons exceptional performance notwithstanding.But this still does not devalue it from being one of the most outstanding films of the past year.We could also take a leaf from its theme of co-habiting together despite our wide and varied differences.Abraham Lincoln said it best... "We are not enemies but friends.We must not be enemies.Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection.The mystic chords of memory will swell and again touch as it surely will be by the better angels of our nature..."

Summary: Right on the mark
Review: I'm amazed at the impact this film had on me. Edward Norton is dead on in his portrayal of Derek Vinyard; he makes the dramatic shift in his character's thinking very believable. Prior to seeing this movie, I had trouble keeping Edward Norton and Edward Burns seperate in my mind. Not anymore! Norton's performance in AHX will stay with me for a long time. A word of warning - the flashback to the event that lands Derek in jail is one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen. There are several other scenes that are difficult to watch, as well. Stay with it! It's worth the effort.

Summary: THE MOST POWERFUL FILM I HAVE SEEN IN YEARS!
Review: The film is disturbing in that is shows you racisim from both sides and almost makes you understand a little about where each is coming from.(whether you want to or not). When an actor is as good as Norton, it's an emotional event just to watch him do his job, but in the role of Derrek Vinyard he goes above and beyond anything else he's done. There is no better actor today. Unfortunatly the film left me with somewhat of a sense of hopelessness. The damage is done! Can it ever be rectified?

Review: If you don't know why you fear or hate something or someone, watch this movie ! It is a good reflexion over racism and where our civilizations go in general. And don't forget that American people are where they are now cause they hated and killed native Indians...

Summary: A thought provoking movie with excellent acting and imagery!
Review: I just got through watching "American History X." I don't even know where to begin on my thoughts of this movie. I went into it thinking it'd be an endless series of gory murders, racial crime, and hatred. Instead, I now have a better understanding of the truthful reality of racism and the crimes that occur because of it. Edward Norton's acting was both incredible and persuasive. I can't even conjure up words to describe the impact this movie has had on me. I never expected this topic to really effect or have the power to bring me to tears. Neither the vulgarity nor the violence made me think less of this movie, it only thickened the reality of these hate crimes and even helped me to better understand myself. If you have any doubt of the seriousness and realism of this topic or even any doubts about your own opinion on it, i suggest you see this movie. It not only opened my eyes to a world that seemed so far away and almost invisible, but it also helped me to better understand myself and taught me not to be so naive about things I don't fully understand.

Review: Edward Norton is amazing as the racist family leader, Derek. He lets you into his character's mind, especially when Derek's in prison. This film makes you question why part of American society condones racism. Go see this movie!

Review: This movie made me realize how strong hate can be. Edward Norton does an excellent job of making this movie real to everyone's life. The idea that anyone could watch this and not walk away with a changed attitude amazes me.
