Rating: Summary: Thought-provoking drama, not for the faint of heart Review: This is an excellent story staring Edward Norton and Edward Furlong as two brothes caught up in the skinhead movement of Southern California.Norton's character, Derek, blames black drug dealers for the death of his father and uses this to further is white supremecist agenda. He is helped by an aging skinhead who brainwashes teenagers in his belief system. After Derek is sentenced to prison for murdering two black men, he experiences a change of heart. Unfortunately, we in he is released, he realizes that his younger brother is now following the same path that he took. He soon works on changing his brother's attitudes towards race. This is truly a hard-hitting drama that will rip at your belief system. It would earn a perfect five stars from me, if not for the ending. It seemed overly dramatic, unnecessary, and rushed. If you rent this movie, you will know what I mean. Overall, however, this is an excellent story and one that I highly recommend.
Rating: Summary: BRILIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: This is an amazing movie from many views. Most people who i have spoken to have said that this movie was nothing but a bunch of "Skin Heads" Rippin on Blacks and Jews. I Belive this movie caught my attention for the simple fact it made you racist. This movie was so empowering That it took you and turns against everything you have ever been taught indifrence. The views in this movie were to strong and too supported that it makes you have to turn in to that. I know being only 16 that many parents censor movies to there children and that if the parent is offended typically the never even attempt to watch it again, Well this movie offended them immensly yet they still watched the whole thing. Many Whites dont want to admit to there racism because society rejects it but watching this movie can almost change your view. I guarentee that you will be moved by this movie...
Rating: Summary: still teh best Neo Nazi and SKinhead film BUT....... Review: it seems imposible for the weidros in Hollywood to produce a film that comesclose to the truth in America (or Europe) these days. Eddy Norton stars as Derek, a talented pupil in High School whose father gets murdered by a black drug dealer during the L.A. riots. Traumatized by this Derek becomes the leader of a local Nazi Skinhead gang mentored by a would be Adolph called Cameron (Stacy Keach). The problem here is that most of the things the fictional character Derek addresses are true, ilegal imigration, the fact that most criminals are blacks, the fact that the public school system in America (and Europe) have turned into zoos where drugs and non-white gangs are the status quo. Basically he just takes those argumentations to th extreme and starts his own personal revenge crusade, that sends him straight to prison. There he gets raped by his white (!!!) Nazi fellow inmates. AMerican History X wants to make a point, but in the end comes up with the same old clichees about the bad bad white folks who should be like dumb sheep and "tolerate" marauding blacks and Latinos in their cities, who happily should pay taxes so that illegal aliens can get even more dollars out of the honest white working men, and of course "Racism is Bad" , geeeee, who would have guessed.....
Rating: Summary: Very power full wich sends people a message......... Review: This movie is basicly about a rasist skinhead who changes after he is commeted a crime to blacks. When he changes he shows his followers what he was missing this whole time. His brother on the other hand doesnt like the idea wich leads to more truble. Edward Norton is very well done in this film. This movie defintley sends a message to viewers. I loved this film and put it in my movie collection. This was a great indepent film for me. It was also one of my most favorite idependent films. I wish the ending wasnt so sad. It left me really upset at the end. But if you think about it he had it coming. Still it was really sad ending. If you ever think about getting a good independent film. Get American History X. I also recomend you watching 21 Grams.
Rating: Summary: american history x Review: this movie is all about the growth of derek from a racist white skin head to a well to do citizen. when derek killed the two black men, he was consumed with the idea that only blacks committ crimes. when his teacher from high school visits him in the prison there, he is opened up to the fact that it's all just an idea that can be broken. when his cell mate meets him, they don't talk at first because he was everything he hated at first. then when derek's eyes opened, things changed for him. he got out and started showing his old followers who have no idea that he had changed. what grabbed me about this movie was that derek changed his brother through his stories about prison. through that the movie gained my respect. and the ending is worth much more than what you can buy the whole movie for now. it's a movie i would definitely show to my children and any history class i would teach. this is a moving story with the motion picture that just grabs you and won't let go. it's the pitbull of movies. i would suggest you get yours because i have had mine, and it's all good from here.
Rating: Summary: Oh, my...wow... Review: I borrowed this from a friend a few days ago, and I've watched it about four times. The first time I saw it, it shocked me. The second time, I cried. The third time, I shook my head and sighed at the fact that people like the characters in this movie -do- exist. This movie is, to put it plainly, about racism, and it has a subtle plot of redemption scarred by loss. The first is subject matter few directors or actors would dare to touch, but this movie takes such things to the extreme. Pros of this movie: Excellent acting. I have a new respect for Ed Norton after this; he portrayed semi-psychotic Derek very well. Edward Furlong portrayed impressionable Danny well, and then there were all the subcharacters who added an interesting flavor to the movie. The dialouge is powerful. This movie makes you listen. The locations added that grimy sense of ghetto to this movie, just as it should have. The black-and-white portions of the movie added a strange something to the movie...to me, it added to the black vs. white conflict that Derek encountered when...I won't tell and spoil it. :) Cons to this movie: Well, language, if that insults you. This movie favors the f-word a lot, but it's not for no reason, it has place in the movie. Well, racism, but that's the plot, so don't get it if it bothers you. Violence, and lots of it, but it works into the plot, so again, it makes sense. One sex scene, and one rape scene. Overall, this is a powerful movie that will make you rethink what you thought you knew about racism and how the human mind works. It's so convincing, you almost think it's a documentery, and then the credits roll and you realize the names are fake, and you're back to safety again, away from the horrors of Venice Beach. Definitely buy this.
Rating: Summary: POWERFUL!! Review: In one word this movie is indeed "POWERFUL" American History X is a movie unlike any other I've ever seen. Edward Norton (The Score, Fight Club) is brilliant and Oscar worthy as Derek Vinyard, a bright young man who is at the breaking point and falls victim to the trap of racism by listening to the lies and propaganda of white supremist leader Cameron (Stacy Keach). Derek's younge brother Danny (Ed Furlong) destined to follow in his older brothers footsteps must learn the wrongs of his older brother so he doesn't repeat them. Perhaps the only one who can reach Danny is his brother Derek. If you've never seen it American History X will shock you to say the least. It contains Extremely brutal violence, extremely harsh language and subject matter, wouldn't recommend it to younger viewers. If your looking for a "POWERFUL, SHOCKING" movie with superb acting than check out American History X! Well worth a look!
Rating: Summary: Powerfully Moving Review: After seeing this film I was amazed I had never heard anyone speak of it. This film is powerfully moving watching one mans struggle to save his brother from the fate he is inflicted on him himself. Norton is amazing in this film and earned a well deserved Oscar nomination as he is so believeable as Derek Vinyard. To watch the final scene where Derek realises it is to late to save brother Danny brought tears to my eyes. The film in general is amazing how the past is portrayed in black and white and the present in colour. The scenes when Derek is retelling his time in prison are very touching and to watch a man realise all he has known is a lie is very moving indeed. I love this film and now after watching it tell everyone I know what a great film it actually is.
Rating: Summary: Great Characters. Film LOOKS fantastic. Review: American History X stands on its own as a great piece of powerhouse performing by all the cast involved, including - Norton, Furlong, Keach, Brooks, D'Angelo and Gould. Essentially the story is about Derek (Norton) who plays an ex-Nazi gang leader who undergoes rehabilitation while in prison where he gets to experience the cons of his fascism. The film tells his story through the eyes of his brother (Furlong) who must write a paper for his principle on his brother's life as punishment for writing an essay on Adolf Hitler. The film poses a number of great questions and answers many of them, although we will never actually get to see the REAL American History X because Kaye was locked out of the editing room, by Hollywood executives and Norton, in an attempt to control Norton's content on the screen and to give it a Hollywood flavor which can be seen throughout the picture when Norton does the sudden U-Turn with the Nazi brother and suddenly become "good guys" almost overnight. Yes, it is hard to believe at times and certainly there is a lot to spoon down in that department, but overall the film is certainly very good and plays out well even if the story is a bit contrived at times, however you will LOVE the cinematography that Kaye produces on the screen and this film does indeed look lush in its color, black and white, slow motion sequences. Definitely a picture worth looking at - to look at, and although the story does have a lot of impact it might be a little artificial in a Hollywood sort of way at times. Pitty Kaye was not allowed the reigns all the way through to the finish.
Rating: Summary: Indepth look to our world Review: American history x is an inspiring movie that shows how people change their ways. Edward Norton was first a black hating nazi who killed other races or fun, then on his trip to prison, he learns that not everyone is the same. I still hate the fact that racism is still going on around the world but what i hate even more is these movies motivating people to kill each other. This movie was 'educational' and showed me there is more to life then judging. Two thumbs up for this movie. I just hope one day that this world can live in peace instead of war.
