Summary: Anthony Hopkin's Oscar worthy performance
Review: I'll admit that only morbid curiosity led me to watch this movie upon it's initial release. The premise of this remake sounded interesting, but the over the top costs and production problems had been tabloid fodder for months. When it didn't do blockbuster business, not many people were surprised.

It's a shame that this movie didn't do better than mediocre reviews and lukewarm boxoffice receipts. There I sat in the audience marveling at the gorgeous design and antiques, not to mention the exquisite costume design. So many films these days go for established designers, but this movie used a studio designer much like the days of the old Hollywood system. The attention to detail is exquisite.

As for the acting, it all boiled down to one scene for me. Anthony Hopkins describing the first time he'd ever had a lamb sandwich to Brad Pitt. It turns into one of the most beautiful remembrance speeches of a widower for the wife he still grieves. Needless to say even this heartless cynic got a bit misty. To have a man express such love without sounding condescending or corny is quite a feat. It's enough to make you believe in the power of a good actor.

Brad Pitt also deserves kudos for this role. Despite living through a personal hell and sustaining an injury, he does a great job in his double role. I thought the scene in which Death says good bye to Claire Forlani's character was some of his best acting.

Summary: Fan-fic opportunities here
Review: A great flick. Really. Subtle and enjoyable, and the soundtrack is one of the best I've ever heard. You know, one could think of fan-fiction to go with this film. What if Death impregnated Susan during their trust? There'd be a little Deathline running around, looking like young Brad Pitt but able to perform supernatural powers, including killing anyone, with a touch. Intersting...

Summary: Excellent movie unusual Pitt is awesome
Review: The peanut butter scene is my favorite of the whole movie. Pitt does such a fine job of being so pleased with peanut butter. An unlikely alliance between the grim reaper and his latest client unfolds into a movie of unusual beauty and soul. The way the entire movie loops around to nearly fold into itself was pleasing to watch. Anthony Hopkins does a fabulous job of conveying both grief at his coming demise as well as a certain sense of wonder in terms of his unique opportunity to put his affairs in order. Excellent film.

Summary: A masterpiece
Review: I really loved this movie. I watched it when it first came out and I watched it again yesterday with my brother and sister (it was their first time). My brother asked a question that I had always wondered: why didn't this movie receive the acclamation it deserved? Yes, it's pretty hard to convince people that death has feelings and falls in love, but it was presented to us in the best way possible. Brad Pitt's performance was great, Hopkins' was phenominal. The emotional story about love and life was strong enough to move. It should of won an award. In my eyes it was a masterpiece.

Summary: OK movie...I guess...
Review: Well this is a nice movie, it has an interesting storyline and it develops its characters nicely but...dang is it ever slow. I guess thats my real complaint with it. A movie like this shouldn't be almost three hours long. They tend to drag events out longer than they really should

Again, I don't want to sound like I'm dissing it, but really...

Summary: Meet Joe Black, a film from another world.
Review: This film is really impressive and moving. Yes, it's a long film, -180min- but not like those ones you get tired in the first hour. It's 3 hours of emotional and unpredictable happenings, showing an impressive plot where Brad Pitt, as Joe Black, acts as Death in a human body. His extraordinary performance makes people believe he's really death, what truly frightened me. To top it off, Anthony Hopkings plays Bill Parrish, Clair Forlani's father. She falls in love with Brad Pitt, but she doesn't know almost anything about him, which makes it a very mysterious relationship, mixing life and death, weakness and power. For me, it's the most touchable relationship I have ever seen!

This film, although sometimes funny, will certainly touch you and make tears role down your cheeks, like it happened to me. I can just say that it's fantastic. You can watch it many times and you won't get tired of it, you will just appreciate it even more.

It's certainly my favourite film of all time and really worth seeing.

Summary: one of my favorite movies of all time!
Review: Many say this movie was far too long and far too uneventful. Wrong! Sure, it is 3 hours long, but the 3 hours has such great dialogue and passion. The plot is just so rich and enveloping. You get drawn into the storyline, and what a story it is! The actors do a marvelous job with it, as well. I was completely taken in by the story and experience an emotional rollercoaster every time I watch it. And I have watched it many times! Every time it is as if I am experiencing the movie for the first time. It never loses its dramatic and emotional appeal. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is willing to look past the 3 hour running time and take a chance on a masterpiece of a film. It will definitely remain one of my favorite films of all time!

So, give it a chance!

Summary: Bored to meet him
Review: MJB is so inferior even to the re-made-for-TV version of "Death Takes a Holiday", starring Monte Markham, that I can't pan it enough. The Markham vehicle had some wonderful moments when Death's imminent victim starts to realize the consequences of Death being "on vacation" - terminal cancer victims, torn by agony- unable to die.... the best MJB could do was to show "Joe Black's" fascination with human sensory input - the peanut butter joke becomes excruciating. I'm delighted to hear the movie died at the box office.

Summary: Not as bad as I thought
Review: I watched this movie because the cable was out and I was bored as a gourd. It was slow. There was too much talking. There were few instances of multiculturalism is the movie (blacks, lationos, asians). I almost turned it off several times.

However, I stuck with it. I found myself engaged. I found myself laughing at times. And by the end of the movie, I was openly weeping. Yes, I got caught up and found myself incredibly moved by the ending. The tenderness and human emotion blew me away! The final exchanges between Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins ("Should I be scared?" "Not a man like you.") WORE ME OUT!

Would I watch it again? Probably not. Did I hate it? Not by a long shot. It was a well crafted movie.

Summary: It's a 45 played at 33 1/3
Review: I recall a review from when the movie was released, stating that the director never passed up an opportunity to milk an emotion out of the actors. Having finally seen the movie, I understand what he was saying. Every shot it seems goes on for a third too long; every close-up is tight as the actors and actresses (fine cast by the way) run through their emotive ranges. But at three hours it just got too d*mn tiring. If this movie had been tightened up to 120 mintues, everyone, from the movie's investors to its producers to the audience, would've appreciated it more.
