Summary: Who the Hell Are You?
Review: This movie is worth it for one character-Weezer played by Shirley Maclaine. The title for my review is one of her lines in the movie. Shirley's character was a hoot. She had the best lines. For example: she tells Sally Field's on-screen husband (Skerritt) that he is a boil on the [backside] of humanity. Of course the movie is good for other reasons. Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Sally Field are all great, but Shirley steals the movie.

Review: I LOVE HIS MOVIE. EVERYTIME I SEE IT I CRY JUST LIKE I DID THE FIRST TIME I SAW IT. JULIA ROBERTS & SALLY FIELD DID A WONDERFUL JOB IN THIS MOVIE. I THINK ITS THE BEST I EVER SEEN IN BOTH OF THEM. I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT EVERYONE SEE THIS MOVIE, IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT, YOUR MISSING OUT. SO GO & GET IT TODAY. IT WILL BE WORTH THE TRIP OR THE WAIT. THE END IS THE MOST HEARTBREAKING AT THE SAME TIME FUNNY PART WITH SALLY AND SHIRLEY. YOU'LL LOVE IT, I GUARNTEE IT.

Summary: wonderful movie
Review: You'll laugh, you'll cry with the story of Shelby, based on the true-life story of Susan Harling, a woman trying to live her life regardless of her diabetes. Her brother, Robert, wrote a play based on her life, which became the basis for this wonderful movie. I truly recommend this movie. It is funny and thoughtful and about life and how we live it to its fullest everyday. DVD features include a really good featurette and not so good commentary by the director Herbert Ross. He gives a bit of unique information as you are watching the movie, but there are long periods where he doesn't say anything at all.

Summary: And this is what all the fuss was about?
Review: Sorry, girlfriends: calling this tear-jerking/manipulating slobbish/ drippy pseudo-Southern romp a "chick flick" is to deliberately insult the female gender. Not one of the women in this story, outside of the Dolly Parton's character, seems ever credible, and all of them are silly caricatures. Idem for the men: I mean, even the TV-glued beer-drinking lazybone husband of hard-working Dolly ends up in the end standing up to ask, out of his own volition (and we really can't figure why on earth!), to attend the funerals of Julia Roberts? If this is a realistic story depicting real people, then I am the Pope's niece. If this is good cinema, then I am giving up on cinema...The DVD comes with an interview of the author of the original play, who has to inform us -lest we failed, indeed ,to suspend disbelief in front of all this goodness oozing as freely as the fake southern accents- that the story is a true one. Well, dude, how come a mad movie like Pedro Almodovar's "All about my mother,",with the initial premise of grotesque characters and absurd situations, feels more real and more gripping and more touching and a far better and more honest hommage to women than any of the sap Steel Magnolia tries so hard to peddle?

Review: I enjoyed this movie for many reasons. Yes this is a chick flick but i think men will love it too. The acting is superb. Julia Roberts should have won the Academy Award for this. The extras done by Hana was also amazing. She's a talented actress. This is also a tear jerker for sure. Get ready with your Kleenex!! Buy the limited edition version cause it has extra cuts in it.

Review: I must say that even though I really like action/adventure that thi is my favorite movie. I grew up in the South, as a matter of fact in Louisiana. The movie is very true to my life and has many familiar aspects. The acting is superb! The roles could not have been played better by anyone else! For a great movie with lots of laughs, tears, and love, watch Steel Magnolias! The extras on the DVD are interesting too! If "laughter through tears" is your favorite emotion then you'll love this movie!

Summary: Flawed But Extremely Appealing & Entertaining
Review: An extremely episodic story of several smalltown southern women whose social lives revolve around meetings in the local beauty parlor, STEEL MAGNOLIAS' script and performances are dogged by an aura of artificiality--but it scarcely matters, for the film is a tremendous amount of fun.Some of the performances are more successful than others, with Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts, and Darryl Hannah coming out on top (I am greatly surprised that so many other reviewers dislike Hannah's performance, which seems to me considerably less artificial than many others--but perhaps since I'm actually Southern I have a different perspective); Sally Fields and Dolly Parton are less successful, but not in any sense that actually distracts from the fun. Perhaps most surprising in a film which focuses on women are the brief but impressive performances from the male supporting cast, which includes effective performances by Tom Skerrit, Sam Shepherd, and Dylan McDermott, and which serve to ground the film with a sense of the broader community in which the women live. The script abounds in zinging one-liners ("If you can't say something nice, come sit by me!") and often hilarious situations (imagine Olympia Dukakis surrounded by naked men in the highschool football team's locker room); it also contains some very touching segments sure to choke up all but the most heartless viewer. And although the story is extremely manipulative and rather predictable, those factors don't actually get in the way of its effectiveness. While probably not a "great film" by any serious standard, it is tremendously good-natured, well-intended, and extremely entertaining, and most people will find that it lingers pleasantly in mind and holds up well under repeated viewings.

Summary: A versatile film that stands the test of time
Review: "Steel Magnolias" is about a group of southern women (Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley McLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and Julia Roberts) who develop strong friendships in a hair salon and in each others' lives. It might sound bland by that one-sentence summary I just attached to it, but believe me, it's far from being bland in any sense. Without a doubt, "Steel Magnolias" is one of the best movies of the late 80's, if not one of the best movies of all time. The film follows the great actresses I mentioned in the last paragraph around the entire movie, while showing how they live their lives, their many ups and downs, and how they stand by each others' sides in both good times and bad. Each of the women have their own personality. M'Lynn (Sally Field) is easy to get along with, Truvy (Dolly Parton) is almost always smiling and showing off her southern accent, Ouiser (Shirley MacLaine) seems to always be in a bad mood no matter what the situation, and I'll let you find out the other personalities for yourself. "Steel Magnolias" is a VERY versatile movie, and aside from the extraordinary acting (especially by Sally Field and Shirley MacLaine), that's mainly what makes it such a great movie. Parts of the movie are downright hilarious, parts such as a bunch of birds being stuck in a certain tree are unforgettable, and parts will probably be tear-jerkers to many people. Best of all, all of these different elements and genres all successfully mix into one package and work tremendously together to create a classic movie called "Steel Magnolias." To be honest, at first, I wasn't really expecting to like "Steel Magnolias" a whole lot after reading what it was about. But, as soon as I saw the stellar cast that was included, I knew it couldn't be that bad of a movie, so I gave it a shot. And I'm glad I gave in and did watch it because I got to see a GREAT all-around movie. If you can handle a hilarious comedy movie that can be realistic and have a few sad parts, I recommend not just watching, but purchasing "Steel Magnolias." It will probably be one of your favorites. Oh yeah, did I mention that it never gets old?

Summary: An Amazing Movie-Julia Robert's Best
Review: This is a sad movie with a kinda obvious ending, but the movie is so charming that you don't think about that until the end. So many people have said Julia Robert's best movie was Pretty Woman or Erin Brockovich, but I think it was this one. She played her part so well, she was so believable. The scene in the barbor shop where she has an attack is a little sad, but so well-acted[don't worry, that's not the ending]. Everyone else did great also, especially Sally Field.
