Rating: Summary: Great plot, characters, scenes, direction. Review: This is, without a doubt, the best movie I have ever seen. I have been waiting months for the DVD to be released. It's like the Professional, if you ever see a portion while channel surfing, you're compelled to watch the remainder--regardless of the time of night or state of mind.
Rating: Summary: Truthfully, the best movie I've ever seen. Review: Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman give stunning performances in this movie adaptation of Stephan King's novella Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption. If you haven't seen this movie, DO IT NOW! Simple as that.
Rating: Summary: Fabulous movie has everthing. A truly brilliant, must see mo Review: This film is truly spectacular. Morgan Freeman simply superb. The suspense of will he won't he continues until the end of the film. It depicts the best and worst of prison life and how those whose task is the guard the prisioners are even more corrupt and brutal!A must see film.....
Rating: Summary: Masterful Review: Sheer and utter perfection.Rarely does a movie stir up this much emotion in its viewers. All you want to do after seeing it is talk about how amazing it is. Every single shot is breathtaking, and the performances are so moving, you feel like you're a part of the film. Darabont has accomplished something few directors have...he has created a masterpiece. Beautiful, haunting, triumphant...I can't wait to see what he does with The Green Mile.
Rating: Summary: ONE OF THE BEST FILMS IV EVER SEEN Review: This movie is diffenately one of the best films iv ever seen. Morgan Freeman gives the greatest performance of his life, in this movie of a man who is accused of murder. You see everything this man goes through in prison. And how he intends to get out of it. This is truely a great movie and would recommend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Count of Monte Cristo/Robinson Crusoe in U.S. gulag. Superb! Review: I bought the video in '95 and watch it with renewed vigor every so often; its musical sound track is mesmerizing. Andy Dufresne's deeply inspiring (albeit thru a symbolic sewer pipe) rebirth from a calculating but innocent, hopelessly imprisoned and enslaved banker convicted of a double murder, to a wealthy, sage-like, free-as-a-bird escapee from the ultimate corruption is unexcelled drama...While depicting the personal tragedies of forgotten, sometimes innocent, "institutionalized", futureless, castaways in gulags ruled by simply another class of criminals, Andy finally gets revenge by knowing the ultimate loopholes and "never losing hope". Great performances: Morgan Freeman plays "Red", his Man Friday ("a man who knows how to get things"), who also narrates it; Bob Gunton the avaricious Warden Norton; Clancy Brown the homicidal thug Captain Hadley; and Miracle Grow's James Whitmore as the "institutionalized" Brooks Hatlin; etc.
Rating: Summary: A masterpiece of cinema Review: Concerning films, the 90's is considered by many to be the worst. Too much emphasis on CGI effects and no-brainer action flicks, comes the usual criticism. William Goldman at Premiere Magazine felt that he could not name 10 great films of the 90's, but of the few that he did mention The Shawshank Redemption was first. Now, I feel that the 90's hasn't been that bad of a decade. Come on, Schindler's List, Braveheart, L.A. Confidential, and Saving Private Ryan are some of my all-time favorites. But I agree with Goldman about Darabont's masterpiece. The one film from the 90's that I would put up against any other movie from any era would have to be 'Shawshank'. Every aspect of the film, from the acting to directing, from the cinematography to the score is just beautiful. This movie works in every way, and in my mind comes damn close to perfection. Truly a cinematic masterpiece. If Darabont manages to come up with a repeat performance on 'The Green Mile' then watch out, we may have a modern day legend on our hands.
Rating: Summary: watchable and re-watchable! Review: Darabont crafts a beautiful story of friendship in the most trying of circumstances. He uses a subtle hand to unfold the story. What could have ended up as a treacly stereotype, turns out as a timeless tale of friendship. Darabont coaxes beautiful performances out of his stars as well as the excellent supporting cast. You will never settle for watching the film just once; it will become a fixture in any collector's movie stash. Shawshank should have beaten the more box-office friendly Forrest Gump for Best Picture.
Rating: Summary: By far the greatest movie of the decade. Review: Frank Darabont's magnificent adaption of King's juicy story is pretty close to perfect. Tim Robbins, not a particularly great thespian otherwise, shines in this film. Morgan Freeman, always better than the movie he's in, finally finds a match for his talent. The story slowly pulls you in, you can practically feel it oozing in through the pores of your skin. And the more times you watch it, the more you appreciate the way the intricate plot unfolds. Also features the best ending ever filmed. If I could give this movie more than measily five stars, I would. Simply astonishing. Can't wait for "Green Mile".
Rating: Summary: One of the all-time greats Review: I just want to say that this is 1994's best movie, maybe the best of the 90's. If it wasn't for overrated actor Tom Hanks and his "Forest Gump" this movie would have grabbed all those oscars "Forest Gump" got, including best picture.
