Based on a beautifully written Stephen King novella, this movie guides you through Shawshank prison with imaginative storytelling and narration in the first person of Morgan Freeman's character. Freeman gives a perfect performance, as does Tim Robbins as the focal character. You will not be disappointed with this masterpiece.

P.S. This movie should never have been beaten in the 1994 Oscars by Forrest Gump. Both are great movies, but I had Shawshank by a nose ...

Review: Excellent! The actors are incredible, the story is both interesting and touching. The story is about a man that never lets go of his dreams. Tim Robbins plays the protagonist that forms a lasting friendship with Morgan Freeman. The chemistry between these two is amazing. After this movie I felt compelled to call my best friend to tell him how much I cared about him.

Review: This movie is by far my favorite for a number of reasons. The actors (going for realism to provoke emotion) were superb. I tip my hat to both Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman for their outstanding performances. I also believe that the simple atmosphere set for this movie added to it's authenticity a great deal. I think that Forest Gump did not deserve the academy award's Best Picture title because it really was nothing in compare to the masterpiece that is The Shawshank redemption.

Review: Shawshank Redemption is a great movie - probably one of the best of all time. It is, however, neither Tim Robbins nor Morgan Freeman's best work. It is the set-up, the content, the aura, and the mood that makes it so great. DVD has once again presented these aspects in a movie-theater-quality format, both picture quality and sound. The extra features on the DVD are abysmal, though - a major downside. (One theatrical trailer and a few production stills) Buy Shawshank for its content and nothing more. Buy it because you'll love it.

Review: Let me understand this..When you say there is no commentary track, does it mean Freeman's narration all through the picture is missing? Or is it an extra goody they "mistakenly" advertised? This is crucial beacuase I think most people who've seen it on tape and broadcasts will agree that its freeman's narration that adds that pang/(bang?)..

Summary: A good sacharine hollywood movie - but thats it!
Review: Maltin's review is correct - its predictable - theres another bad prison movie with an overwrought good white guy (Tom Hanks) and Black Guy with a heart of gold out called the Thin Green Line - its called Formula Folks! I saw this in the theatre first and was very dissapointed, i saw the DVD and I saw no reason to change my opinion.
