Summary: The Greatest Movie Not to Win an Oscar
Review: It has long been my contention that it is the moviemaker's task to hold the viewer's attention, not to burden him with his self-indulgent, difficult-to-follow symbolisms.

That having been said, I find it difficult to find another movie I would recommend more highly than The Shawshank Redemption. Without any high-adrenaline action sequences or steamy sex scenes (two sure-fire ways to get the vewer's attention), this film somehow has the power to make you sit through all 142 minutes without for a moment getting bored. And I challenge anyone who has seen it to delete any scene, even any minute, from the final edit. The fact is, you can't. Because every single scene is an essential element that contributes to the final result: a masterpiece that captures the drama of enduring friendship and resiliency of the human spirit more powerfully than any other film ever made. Even those who normally do not watch movies with a critical eye will find themselves so drawn into this experience. I really can't say enough about this film. Suffice it to say that this is certainly the Greatest Movie Not to Win an Oscar. (Since Citizen Kane, at least. )

Actually, I can forgive the Film Academy for not honoring this film with the Oscars I firmly believe it deserved. But when the American Film Institute in 1998 put together their list of The 100 Greatest Movies of all time (covering the period from 1896-1996), and so myopically overlooked Shawshank in favor of such titles as Rocky, Dr. Strangelove, Network, and Jaws, well, I thought that was absolutely ridiculous.

I wouldn't hesitate to put it in the top five of all time.

Summary: Excellent prison drama
Review: The Shawshank Redemption is an excellent movie set in a prison in Maine. It tells the story of a man sent to prison for a life sentence for killing his wife and the man she is cheating with. The movie follows Andy Dufresne's story as he suffers through his years in prison. As years go by, he befriends a fellow inmate, Red, sent to prison for the same crime as Andy. This is an excellent movie with an even better cast. The story is both realistic and enjoyable with characters that are very likable and believable.

Tim Robbins stars as Andy Dufresne, the man wrongly sent to prison for the murder of his wife and lover. He plays the role to perfection as the man who slowly becomes used to prison life as he meets several fellow inmates. His friend Red is played by Morgan Freeman in another great role. The frienship between the two men is perfect throughout. Also, the last 30 minutes are some of the best in movie history. Overall, the DVD is nothing special. There is a widescreen presentation, but my advice is that if you have the VHS don't bother with the snap case DVD. A great movie that everyone will enjoy!

Summary: What a movie!
Review: This is an essential addition to your DVD collection. I have always had a hard time believing that Stephen King - the horror writer of our times - could write such a beautiful story of friendship, determination, and drama. It it perhaps the only story that I know of by King that has a wonderful ending that will bring tears to a grown man's eyes. This is just that kind of movie that if you haven't seen it, you are definitely missing something! Buy your copy today!

Summary: Why Buy
Review: Shawshank Redemption is a movie that stands out amoung most movies. A quiet man, wrongfully convicted of murder, a "hardened criminal". Unlikely pairing for friends, in a place like Shawshank Prision, yet this is what the movie is ultimetly about.

Tim Robbins plays the quiet banker, wrongfully imprisoned for killing his wife and lover. He is brutilized his first few years in prison, but then little by little he earns the respect of fellow inmates and guards by showing them some of his hidden talents, particularly in finiance.

Morgan Freeman is the natural choice for the hardened criminal who befriends Andy. Morgan's character Red is a savvy businessman in his own way, and part of what keeps him alive and respected in prison.

The movie is quite long, but you will be ingrossed in the movie and never realize it. Every scene is well worth the time to watch. The music more than fits the movie. This Oscar nominated movie is defintly one to add to your collection.

It's a bit unusual considering it's a Stephen King movie, yet it's my personal favorite of all movies based on Stephen King's writings. Take the time to watch it. You won't be sorry you did.

Summary: The redemption of hollywood
Review: Great movie. Why do some people think the ending is hollywoodish? I conveys the meaning of hope! Come on! Well this is on my top ten best movie list (I don't know where, it's not in order) This movie is a great movie that has message. And an inspiring movie ...I have no problem with the movie, only some people. It is a tincy tiny bit overrated, because everyone think this is THE BEST when there are also other great movies(Schindler's List, Deer HUnter, Apocalypse NOW) out there. But it is as good as everyone(well almost everyone) says it is

Summary: What happens when and honest man goes to prison?
Review: Andrew Dufresne is a man convicted of a crime he didn't commit. This is the start of the film but it's basically a catalyst for changing the lead characters life as well as a few others.

After being convicted of a double-homicide, Andy is stripped of his life of privilege and sent to feared Shawshank Prison. Once there things go from bad to worse for him, but that's only for the first few years. Eventually the warden learns that Andy has special financial talents that can be put to use by means that are legal and otherwise.

A twist of fate will cause Andy to get so close to a new trial and the possibility of freedom and redemption that he can taste it. But prison is not a fairy tale world as the viewer learns from Andy's friend Red. But hope is never completely lost, and the man who perseveres can triumph over great adversity.

There is a happy ending, but don't believe for a second that this is a happy film.

Shawshank Redemption is a movie based on a Stephen King story titled "Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption." The movie is dark, but more importantly has adult tones and therefore I recommend not allowing children under the age of 14 to view this film. This film deals with aspects of prison life that most people would just like to pretend don't exist.

The soundtrack is a great bit of music and could stand alone, but works even better within the movie. The symphonic score was composed by Thomas Newman. There's even some Mozart thrown in for a few minutes. Hank Williams sings a song for those who don't like classical.

Not much on DVD extras here, but a great movie worth owning.

Summary: Top notch
Review: this was a great film, and I really love Morgan Freeman. It was messed up though that he had to go to prison for something that wasnt his fault, but in the end it was good that he did, because he learned alot more, and made some good friends along the way. I highly recommend that you watch this. ITs very moving and impowering.
