Summary: Missed potential
Review: A beautifully shot film with some extraordinary acting by Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke and Josh Charles. However, the script really gets too heavy-handed at times and Robin Williams' character lacks depth to understand his motivation in moving his students. Nevertheless, I get lost in Mr. Weir's recreation of a 1950's prep school where the pressure to conform breeds an unbearable yearning for intimacy and friendship

Summary: Overplays its hand
Review: In a strange roundabout way Dead Poets Society is like Milos Forman's One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Both films pretend to be about much more then they are. That film turned the tale of a convict in mental asylum in to an anti-establishment metaphor, and similarly this film (unwisely) turns a school tale into a freedom of expression soap opera. Ofcourse Cukoo's nest is a better film because the message doesn't reach the sachrrine heights it does here. Yet beneath the gloss of Dead Poets Society there is a simpler, more engaging tale of friends at school that makes the film well worth watching. Peter Weir is a director whose films any self respecting film buff should make a point of seeking out. His early (and under appreciated) masterpieces include The Last Wave, Last Picnic at Hanging Rock, and Galipoli. He has made modern classics (Witness, The Truman Show) and little gems( Fearless, Greencard). His best though is the 1983 journalist drama The Year of Living Dangerously.

Dead Poets Society is perhaps his least work, the freedom of expreesion/self actualisation message is completely contrived, bears very little resemblance to the behaviour or concerns of average teenagers, and thus a big distraction in the centre of the film that almost sinks it. So is the tragic fate of Neil, it feels like manipulation, a trick and left me unmoved. We now come to the ending which is downright embarassing. Then why is this film worth seeing (and perhaps owning)? Because of the actors playing the students, and their more interesting(and moving) side stories. Ethan Hawke is great as the shy student who has difficulty communitating, similarly Robert Sean Lenorad plays the father pleasing affable Neil to perfection.Of these stories I enjoyed Nox Overstreet's persuit of the popular girl the most engaging, the scene at a party where huge football players mistake him for somebody else is hilarious. Perhaps this would have been a great film if it just were their story, leaving out the Robin Williams character entirely, because on the level of the students this is a wonderful film. But then they had to add the inspiring teacher, the grim narrow minded principal and other hamfisted "Inspiring" stuff.

Summary: Truly a masterpiece.
Review: The Dead Poets Society is an incredibly wonderful film that has touched millions. It is the story of a man who teaches several students to love poetry, to think for themselves, and to follow their dreams. He shows them something that none of them knew how to reach, a profoundness, an eloquence, a gift of uniqueness and individuality buried deep inside. He shows them the strength and intensity, the love and passion, and the fear and the fury that they never knew they had. He shows them how to let go, and how to say goodbye. But above all, he showed them how to live. It is a touching story, nothing short of a masterpiece. Robin Williams' acting was spectacular, and I don't believe any other actor could have done as well.

Summary: No depth
Review: The only problem I had with this movie is the fact that Robin William's character had no depth. You don't know that much about the character's personal life, or much else. You just know that he influences the kids. He just seemed very 2D. Unlike Good Will Hunting, where Robin William's character had more depth, for example, his wife's death, his social status, and his miserable life. I only which they could have given as much depth for this movie.

Summary: A Great Film
Review: This is going to sound pretty sissy but I actually cried at the end of this film! This is one of those films that reminds us of what is important in life. The simplicity of love, the beauty of words, and the way we often forget to "Sieze the Day." Memorable roles by Robin Williams and the cast of young actors, many of whom have gone on to play roles in other notable films (i.e. Ethan Hawke in Gattica).

Summary: Ordinary and dull
Review: Just a simple story , plus parents willing to see the best of everything in their children are shown exactly as 'monsters', rather than adults who could normally make mistakes as expected from human-beings. Also the teacher who acts in unusual ways is shown as a ''hero''. Simply the good versus the bad ! I do not condone pressure or do not blame 'different' types, however this movie is just ''the war between the extremists''.

Summary: One of the greatest movies ever made!
Review: This movie made me cry, laugh, and understand the value of living life to its fullest. I don't want to live my life like Neil would have and I hope to one day have the courage that Todd did. Movies don't get better than this!

Summary: Dead Poets, without a Doubt, one of the best films ever made
Review: I had never seen this movie up until a few weeks ago, at the urging of my Brit Lit teacher, who reminds me of Mr. Keating, because they both have passion about what they do in their life. And that is what this movie is about, it's not about Whitman, Tennyson, or Herrick; It's about having a passion for life, Taking chances, Never holding back, being your own Person. and I don't know how any person who went through adolesence couldn't relate to this film and find it to be profoundly moving. I am a lover of Robin Williams and Ethan Hawke, so I don't know how I managed to aviod this movie for as long as I did, but not only is it deep, it's funny, it's moving, it's a tearjerker. It's everything rolled into one. It is one of my favorite movies. Go out and rent it today! Carpe Diem!
