Summary: A great plot....great dialogue
Review: Don't really understand the last and only review for this movie. Either that guy was watching some other movie, or he is totally incapable of determining great movies due to his ignorance (I'm leading toward the second reason). Watch this movie, nothing is predictable, and everything is well made. Matt Damon was great and Edward Norton was better. And Malcovich, well, what can you say, he's Malcovich!

Summary: Poker Movie for Poker Players
Review: This truly is an accurate poker movie. It follows the life of an aspiring young poker player who gives up his best friend, his girl friend and his law career to follow his true dream. Critics have claimed that this movie lacks character development, and makes the mistake of developing characters that seemingly disappear during the movie. While this is true, I believe it was done purposefully, and is indicative of the life of a professional poker player. The poker games are realistic and believable, which makes the movie a joy for serious players. Unfortunately, most poker fans will not understand all of the nuancnes and conventions used in the move. The main style of poker, no-limit hold 'em, is not a popular variety of poker unless you are a truly serious player. In short, this is a great movie for serious poker fans, but will not be appreciated by the general audience. Personally, I loved it. It ranks as one of my favorite movies, but I can understand how many people would not appreciate it.

Review: Undramatic, unexciting, unfunny, unentertaining, unbearable... Matt and Ed, what is the problem here? From "Saving Private Ryan" to this Damon? And Mr. Norton, winning a Golden Globe and Oscar nom for "Primal Fear" didn't teach you better. Oh well... As for John Dahl, "The Last Seduction" was your last great movie. If you want to make more movies like "Rounders" go work with Jean Claude at his 'straight to video' studio. And Miramax! Have you no shame! Leave these corny cliche flicks to the big studios. Give us more "Pulp Fiction", "Sling Blade" and (yes, even more) trendy teen horror flicks. Please, don't insult us with good looking guys hustling poker games... "I've seen better film on teeth." Summary: Finally, a realistic poker movie
Review: If you like poker, you'll love this movie. Unlike movies such as the Cincinnati Kid, this is a movie about real poker. The hands are realistic, the comments about the game ring true, even the jargon is accurate. Except for the tight connection with organized crime, this movie gives a good sense of what high stakes poker is like.

Summary: Ok film...but not all that great
Review: This film has several great things about it: First, the acting is excellent, the direction is also commendable with some unique shots of allies and early morning New York, and it has a decent storyline with some exceptions.
Unfortunately, there are some things that I noticed which prevented me from loving the film, and making it an even bigger success critically as well as in sales.
There is a pivotal scene in the movie where Matt Damon's character is commended by some of his professors for his remarkable capability of reading poker players. Although he is a keen observer, any armature or pro player will tell you that there is no way that one can infallibly predict the cards of five players at a poker table, just impossible. I get it he has a talent for recognizing what's going on, but they made it too far-fetched.
Another hole in the storyline was how he went broke in the beginning of the film when he made a "run at it," put a lot of his money on the line to win much more. In the beginning of the film he has over 30,000 dollars, and his goal is to play in the World Poker Championships, which only costs, 10 thousand and the payoff is over a million (it's more now, but when the movie takes place it's accurate).
Granted some of these loopholes, which will bug you a bit in the movie, you can except to like the film because it's entreating with some very good performances. And most importantly of all, it is not an esoteric film for poker buffs only, anyone can watch it and be entertained.
It's not worth owning...eh... maybe rent it first and see if you like it. But hey, I'm pretty critical of my movies so...

Summary: You'll Flop a Set.
Review: But it's no Full House or Flush. I loved the poker action in this movie and that is what made it worthwhile. It has an authentic feel with its snapshots of "Super System" and "Poker Tells" and its cameo with Johnnie Chan. Norton plays a great character but most of Damon's real life activities are cliched and boring. He's an old ace trying to go straight and a blue collar working man among lawschool types...yawn. That's been done a million times. The stuff with his professors and girlfriend were rather contrived. The actual poker battles are why its worth seeing. Malkovitch is great as KGB and even seeing them in the Taj Mahal was enjoyable. Oh well, see it for the poker.
