Review: This is the type of film that you see once and remember vividly for some time. It's a great story. Both Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke give good performances. The DVD includes additional scenes and an alternate ending. As soon as I finished watching this movie, I wanted to see it again.

Summary: Denzel shines in this cop thriller
Review: Earning Denzel Washington an Oscar for his bad guy persona, Training Day is an engaging film examining the events of one day in the life of a crooked cop and his innocent protégé.At the center of the film are the on-the-spot performances of Washington and Ethan Hawke. Clearly the change in role for Denzel energized him profoundly in bringing his bad cop character to life. Though not as celebrated, Hawke is also excellent, portraying an eager Narc in training. These two grab you right in and hold you for the duration of the film. The powerful story, though, is just as absorbing. Without spoiling too much, the corruption that Hawke's character witnesses through the course of the day is shocking and lands him into a situation he may not get out of alive. Though the film at times falls back on some standard movie devices, overall it's fully entertaining and hard to stop watching. It's definitely a character movie to see more then once.

Summary: Washington and Hawke Power the Relentless "Day"
Review: This movie will probably be remembered as one of the best urban crime films ever, mostly because of the hellish presence of Denzel Washington, the fine acting Ethan Hawke, and the ultra-gritty directing Altonie Fuqua. The film follows Hakes' character in his first day in LA's notorious Narcotics Division. There he meets Washington, a veteran of the Division, whose morals have been corrupted by years of seeing the worst of humanity, or his appetite for power, which ever you believe, but either way he seems to give justification to every action he takes ("Were wolves among sheep, it takes a wolf to kill a wolf.") But some of Washingtons' action seem to go far beyond the line, and Hawke questions his reasons for them. The movie is also given a great, challenging script in order for the actors and the audience to question the limtis of the law, and power.

Review: The movie was just like many other cop files/buddy films. Granted it can happen, but really, we have seen this all before. Greed takes over. We know cops don't make much, we know some have to find other ways. Been there, done that. And yes, Denzel got the big award. But he did better work in some of his past films. Much better than this one. Like Glory, or Courage under fire. Or Devil in a Blue dress

Review: I don't recommend this VHS version to buy.....get it on DVD but hey you got to get what you gotta get... This was a good movie and the plot is very on point. Denzel won a Oscar for this movie and I think he should of considering the talent and the character building that he did for this movie. This is a movie to have in the collection and watch it every 2 months are something. ....

Summary: Surprisingly disappointing
Review: I watched Training Day with high expectations, after Denzel Washington's Academy Award. After watching this film, I can tell you that Denzel deserved his Oscar alright -- he just didn't earn it in this film. Washington has demonstrated his extraordinary talent in everything from Glory to Philadelpha to The Hurricane, and it is a crime that he received his biggest accolade not for any of those three films, but for this overdone, unconvincing bit of celluloid. There's no question that Washington does quality work here, but leave it to the Academy to confuse an impressive turn in a contrary-to-type role with an Oscar-worthy performance. (Seemed to be a theme this year, as Halle Berry's good-but-not-great performance in an ugly role took home an Oscar as well, when other of her performances were far more deserving.) In terms of quality, Ethan Hawke's performance as the morally conflicted rookie was far, far more impressive. The real problem, however, is the film, which has its high points, including several high-tension moments between Alonzo and Jake, but devolves into a formulaic good-cop vs. bad-cop story with a totally anti-climactic <I>deus ex machina<I> ending. Director Fuqua shows promise, but has some growing up to do.

Summary: Disturbingly Good
Review: When I saw this film at the theater, it disturbed me and as a result, I didn't think it was that good. The disturbing part? Well, the violence and the language! But that is an integral part of the movie. When the film later was on cable and I reluctantly watched it, and then watched it again, and again, and again. I found myself mesmerized each time by the acting, in scene after scene. Denzel and Nathan were very believable and compelling characters. The scenes with just Nathan were the most riveting! Though the ending is a canned, quick and furious wrap-up to the story, it is the acting that makes this a memorable piece of cinema.

Summary: Excellent acting / great script / good extras
Review: Training Day, as an entire film is great. The dvd extras make this dvd extra special. You get deleted scenes , dir. commentary, music videos , and an alternate ending. Most times the "alternate ending " , added to newer dvd's, motivate me to buy it. Although, 9 times out of 10, you get an instant idea of why it was deleted ,in the first place. However, just to have that viewing option , it's worth the investment. Anyway, the film's actors deliver phenominal performances and catipult a simple script ,into a film that not only ,studies the motivations and psychology of people dealing with the corruption and life on the streets, but entertain and shock the viewers. As you should already know, Denzel Washington took home an Academy Award after his portrayal of a corrupt undercover police officer,in this production. Ethan Hawk, also works through his role as a rookie cop , with excellent believability and intensity. Although , this film has valuable lessons to learn , I don't recommend that you view this with the little ones. It contains scenes of drug use , very foul language, and graphic violence. Despite those aspects , Training Day offers a rare glimpse into the harsh realities of crime and deseption. Definately a dvd to buy. Even if you're not into the bad cop /good cop movies, seeing Denzel play a charcter that's as evil as his best good guy roles were , in the past, makes it worth your while. Alot of people I know were shocked that he could play bad, so good. But if they'd noticed , he gave a fantastic sinister performance as the younger juvenile Malcom X , in the Spike Lee movie. Anyway.......order Training Day and buckle your seat belts.
