Rating: Summary: An Insult to America's Minorities Review: This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen - it's truly deplorable, totally unbelievable. There's no way on earth the sleeze-ball portrayed by Denzel Washington in this flick could ever become the commander of an elite police unit in a major US city - just no way. And if I were a Hispanic or Black American, I would be totally insulted by the way my people are portrayed in this film. ALL of them appear to be low-life, drug guzzling, promiscuous whores and thugs. The only character with any morals is, of course, white. How do these so-called "film makers" sleep at night? What some people will do for money never ceases to amaze me.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant performance makes a great movie Review: Ignore the folks who are carping about the plot. The plot is an afterthought designed to move a brilliant performance (Denzel Washington) and a very good one (Ethan Hawke) from beginning to end. (In fact, to the extent that the plot relies on a dime-store twist to avoid Jake Hoyt's getting his melon blown off in a bathtub, it's not even very GOOD.) But the acting is superb, and Washington's performance in the last 15 minutes truly virtuoso. Buy it.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining film. But not nearly close to being great. Review: I found Training Day to be very entertaining, and with two good performances by the two leading actors. Needless is to say that Denzel Washington did not deserve an Oscar for this performance; but, hey, it's Hollywood, they had to give an Oscar to a black leading actor anytime soon. Rusell Crowe deserved the award by far, very far. But anyways, I recently saw a film called "Narc", with Ray Liotta and Jason Patric. It was in the same genre of Training Day, but much more realistic and less manipulative than this film. Training Day is a good, but commercial Hollywood film. If you like really good, well written character-driven, realistic films, with excellent performances, about two undercover cops with different views on how things should be handled, watch "Narc", it is ten times a better movie than the average "Training Day".
Rating: Summary: boom Review: training day snaps at you and it does that by Denzels gritty and pulsating performance. Ethan Hawke is also great as Hoyt, who is put on the spot and sees the real Denzel. began great and ending riveting, this'll put some adrenaline into your viens.
Rating: Summary: So much better than it sounds Review: The plot may sound woefully overdone- You could even reduce it to good cop, bad cop. Rookie- Veteran. Crooked- Straight laced. But really just summing it up like that is an injustice to the movie. Like other reviews have mentioned, Denzel Washington is outstanding. Ethan Hawk is very good too but if the last scenes Denzel is in don't prove that he is one of the fines actors still making movies then you need to watch them over again my friend. This movie works. Even if the plot line seems like a big wallop of a cliche, then I'll put it this way... If you have to see just one good cop, bad cop flick, this is probably the best one you'll ever see. I stayed up all night to watch this on HBO when I was already up later than I should've been, even though I knew I had to go to work the next day. It is one of those kind of movies. I just kept wondering whether Washington's character was really a bad guy or...what?! That is the effect this has on people, even after Washington does some things that are really questionable, you still wonder. Even though I'm saying this is a heck of good movie, I can't recommend getting the dvd before viewing it on a rental first. After all, YOU might not like it just because somebody else does. But I definetly recomment watching it at any rate.
Rating: Summary: Denzel did so very well.... Review: I watched this DVD for the 8th time the other night and I still sit here in awe. Sure, it would not have even been close to being worthy of five stars if it wasn't for the stellar performance by Denzel Washington. Two stars could have easily been taken away due to the fact that this storyline has been rehashed in several other films. But, his performance!! D@mn!! Very few actors can do a complete flip flop in character like Denzel has done in the movie. In the past he has played nothing other than a calm, cool and collective character. For anyone to say that he wasnt worthy of the oscar that he won for best actor needs to check themselves. Who should have won then? Russell Crowe for Beautiful Mind? The book made that movie. In that movie, Crowe played the same expressionless pasty faced character that he always plays.... just add some mumbling and fumbling in and you have Dr. Nash. Sure, Russell is a good actor but we have yet to see him take a role that will show us exactly how versatile his acting ablilities are.
Rating: Summary: A police officers point of view Review: I think it was a great movie and I really feel sorry for all of those who really think these types of things do not happen and these types of officers do not exist. This may be an extreme day in the life of a corrupt cop, but days like this do happen and the events of the day are not uncommon. In big cities this should come as no suprise. This movie is very entertaining, and very close to real life. I highly reccomend it if you can handle having your eyes opened.
Rating: Summary: Don Review: A great movie to watch if you find yourself feeling too good and want something to pull you down - make you feel really bad and down in the dumps. What a waste of a great actor like Washington.
Rating: Summary: One of the best movies of the past 5 years Review: Training Day is awesome!Beware, it is violent also. It is intense, but a great movie.
