Summary: VHS Widescreen Edition
Review: The VHS Edition was recorded in High Definition, so the picture quality was just awesome even on a 240 Horizontal line-Rez standard VCR. Sound is also excellent on my 3D stereo system--not quite Dolby Surround, but close.As for washed out colors, you may be referring to the high contrast the film was shot in. That was normal. Some scenes have a "heavenly" glow in them for a purpose. I think they used a high shutter speed also because some explosions look similar to cam-corders using high shutter speed. I believe the Widescreen Edition is a must. It is in 1.85:1 ratio which isn't much different than full 4x3 (1.33:1) ratio of Pan & Scan. I don't understand people who don't like widecreen. It's the WHOLE picture! In Pan & Scan you're missing a great deal of the picture.

Summary: The most realistic movie I've ever seen!
Review: I have never seen any other movie as realistic in graphics as in Saving Private Ryan. It has a very touching plot to it, also showing us how war was really like at that time. Tom Hanks acts very well but his character is mostly in a gloomy mood. My favorite character is Jackson, the "holy" sniper. He was absolutely one of the tightest characters in the movie.

Summary: Straight Mirror (Edited Review)
Review: Excellent war movies depend on the taut requirements of realism. Often a tool of that realism is a license for psychological theatrics: because war is chaos, the characters carry the chaos and destroy themselves. Vietnam movies are the natural examples. We have the sweltering, sinister jungle and a phantom enemy: we get the ruminating dialogue of the insane. Sometimes this is realism. Other times, though, I feel a director is using war as a forum for existential exercise. Spielberg, I think, rightly goes the other way. The first violent scene is more "visual" than psychological. And the men storming the beach are not immediately converted into a preaching symbol. We do not bring up the words "madness" or "hell" or explain. The brave implication is this: there is a kind of better comprehension in looking.

Summary: Technical Difficulties
Review: I loved this movie, even though uneven at times. I eagerly awaited my DVD, and when I popped it in the machine, my Panasonic A110 couldn't play it. It would make a horrible racket and spin incorrectly. My CD player couldn't handle it, either (I tested it for defects). Amazon was great in sending a new one out which I should get soon. Any other problems suffered by anyone?

Summary: A Feel Good Propoganda Movie
Review: Unabashadly pro-american. Nothing wrong with that but it is kind of a yawn to see another war movie that places the germans with no character, existing for the sole purpose to be eventually blown away by americans. The Omaha Beach landing scene was a good rush, but personally I like my stories to have antagonists with personalities. Plus the typcasting... the Jew, the Pencilhead, The Italian, The Brooklynite... etc. UGH! BEAT ME WITH A HAMMER! Take away the great visual battle scene and all you have is another formula story.

Summary: Spielberg offers harrowing look at front-line combat
Review: This film is exceptional in all areas: script, production design, performances, photography, and human impact. Spielberg gets into the hearts and souls of men at war who would rather be anywhere else, but who do the job despite overwhelming adversity. An emotionally wrenching film.

Summary: Above average collector's edition
Review: Received my DVD copy last night. My scoop of the day: a) sound effects were above average (they got an Oscar for it);sounds are precisely located so they match the visual effects in terms of location of event and distance; b) low-freq sound effects are quite exceptional; particularly, the far-away rumbles; c) picture quality is much better than the VHS (that's expected) d) trailers are the worst ones that I've ever seen. Unlike other trailers, which tend to over-represent the movie, this one actually under-represented the movie. Not bad for a collector's edition, although, I expected the picture quality to be more crisp, considering it's DreamWorks production.

Summary: If someone says it was horrible, they're missing out
Review: When one joins the Armed Forces of the United States, he or she commits themselve to something far greater than just a squadron or division or brigade. As a member myself, I appreciate the ability of Spieldberg to capture the truth of war. Not just physically, although the reality is rather frightning, but the psychological aspects as well. I suppose it takes someone near to the theme of the movie to understand the greatness of it, or perhaps not. But to cast this movie to the bottom of a hole is a disgrace to those who have fought the wars, been on the sides, or helped from home. This is more than a movie, it's life for thousands of Americans throughout our past, that is vividly brought to a screen.
