Summary: Words do not do it justice
Review: Saving Private Ryan is arguably one of the best films ever made. It's a true masterpiece that becomes more phenomenal with each viewing. After watching this film, one thing becomes apparent: Shakespeare in Love did NOT deserve Best Picture.

Summary: The best war movie ever
Review: THis was an excellent movie from start to finish! The cast kept the movie fast and somewhat humorous. The visuals were great. The blood and gore was better than most cheesy horror flicks. The action did get somewhat dull during the long walk to find private Ryan. The movie is an all around masterpiece. The best war movie I've ever seen!

Summary: Extraordinary, vicarious WW II movie drama, .
Review: Steven Spielburg has outdone himself and scaled unimaginable heights in the depiction of modern human (WW II)history, it's misery, the horrifying tragedy of war and the demonstration of the lurking presence of a human soul behind the tragic business of war.

Tom Hanks epitomizes the extraordinary leader with a heart and soul, of whom there were doubtless many such in the 2nd WW, unheard, unsung and unseen, buried in WWII documentation, in foreign lands and lost in the smoke of the battles they perished in forever.

Spielburg has resurrected the incidents, in an eminently 'don't ever forget' movie, taking us step by step into the blackness of what must have been 'D-Day' and it's madness.

For many years, 'The Longest Day', an epic made by Cornelius Ryan, was deemed the best portrayal of the horrors of D-Day...it is fitting that his depiction is displaced by this magnumopus of Steven, while paying tribute to the name 'Ryan'.

A must see, especially for the younger generation, so they may realize the wonderful, yet demented world that we live in and realize that war does not destroy the soul altogether.

Summary: great action, stilted plot
Review: This film shows what Spielberg can do with a huge sum of money at his disposal. Incredible battles that really set the mood combined with silly, boring dialogue. From the outset, we know that Ryan will be saved and men will die to save him. All that we do not know is the twists and turns the pitched battles will take in the marvelously created bombed out town near the bridge. I am not aware of the technical discrepancies the film has regarding equipment used, but the failed plot is all too obvious as is the poor acting by Damon. The movie seemed to come to a screeching halt when we first encounter Damon and listen to his trite lines. It picked up again in the amazing battle in the town. The ending was beyond stupid and the before and after scenes in modern day Normandy were spoon fed mush that dimished the film's effort to bring us back to a world long gone, that of a shattered French country side teeming with Germans and Americans, delivering random death to each other. My Great Uncle fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and at the very least, this movie, for all it's faults, brought home the horrible randomness of death that war delivers-those that die are often the ones who try the hardest to do the right thing. I think it is worth a dvd purchase, but I liked A Midnight Clear better, with Ethan Hawke.

Summary: outstanding
Review: The pure thought and images I saw and felt were unsupassed with brillance. A grand story which made me feel as if I was there at Omaha Beach. As a Veteran I owe my respect to the Men on the Beach that day and Mr. Speilberg for taking the time and effort to let the younger generations see what happened that infamous day during a time when the world was at a period of madness and strife.

Summary: Excellent!
Review: I know that the majority of reviews in this list are very positive, but there are a few that are very negative. I guess everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion. I can understand that some people might find this film too painful to watch, because of its graphic depiction of war, but lets face it, war is not a pleasant experience. I think that Saving Private Ryan is a movie that every American should watch. If people understood the ultimate sacrifice that many men made in order for us to have some of the basic freedoms that we have today, maybe our country would be a safer place. Several reviewers made the comment that the story was too basic. I admit, it is a very simple story, but I think it was meant to be. Spielberg's goal was to create a visually stunning and thought provoking movie that showcased the horrors of war and in my opinion, he did just that. Saving Private Ryan is the best war movie I have ever seen. After viewing it, it made me want to be a better American. I cannot end this review without making reference to a review that appeared above titled "Spielberg Masterpiece" is an oxymoron. In that review, the author claimed that The Thin Red Line was a better movie than Saving Private Ryan. One of the reasons he cites is the fact that The Thin Red Line had more "film" actors as opposed to Saving Private Ryan which had more "sitcom" actors, like Tom Hanks. The author must not be aware that Tom Hanks won two Best Actor Oscars back to back. As an actor, this puts Tom Hanks in the same category with Jack Nickolson, Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman, Marlon Brando and Spencer Tracy. I think it is safe to say that Tom Hanks is a "film" actor, but I guess the reviewer prefers movies with unknown "film" actors like the star of The Thin Red Line, who I've never heard of and have never seen since.

Summary: This film is an event.
Review: Awesome, without parallel I'm speechless! After watching this I had to go take a nap. Whew, what a powerful creation. What a powerful statement. Speilberg has outdone himself.

Summary: great movie
Review: I can't believe someone had the nerve to compare this movie to jurassic park2. I'm in shock. You fell asleep after the normandy scene? I was so traumatized by this movie i couldn't think about anything else for days. And yes the color was done like that on purpose. I saw an interview with spielberg and he said he had 40% of the color extracted. Its not supposed to be a pretty movie with blue skies and nice green scenery.

Summary: Stunning drama
Review: A timeless film about the horror of war and the nobility of sacrifice for one's fellow man. Only the summer hit WWII novel, The Triumph & the Glory can come even close to Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan in conveying the true meaning of courage and honor.
