Summary: Why the movie skips
Review: Its called layering. With a movie this long they have to make you switch sides or have the movie pause for a sec while it changes. I'd rather have it skip for a sec then change the entire disk over. Also, the Germans are all portrayed the same because that is how the American soldiers saw them, all evil, all the same. (And almost all of them were evil, you can't say otherwise)

Summary: I expected more... not to say this wasn't a great movie!
Review: don't get me wrong, this movie was a wonderful movie and very vivid as to the horrors of war, but after all the hype that it got i expected more. somehow it seemed drug out between the time Hanks takes on the mission of finding Damon's character and when he finally does find him. i found my mind wondering in this period, but my attention was once again grabbed when they finally found private ryan and they began planning what could possibly have been their final stand. overall i enjoyed the movie.

Summary: Very Well Done
Review: At the beginning of this movie, you see a man walking through rows and rows of crosses in a military cemetery. This is the opening to one of the greatest war movies I have ever seen. The whole story is amazingly written and is suggested to anyone who wants to see what war really has to offer. This movie explains to the audience that war isn't just a game and it tells a story of men in combat better than any movie I have ever seen. This is a very excellent movie and I would suggest it to anyone willing to see the blood.

Summary: Possibly the best WWII movie ever
Review: Yes, the first 15 minutes assault your senses, and may make you sick. Thousands of people being blown to pieces tend to do that to you.

Spielberg has created a masterful, historically-faithful movie, and he's done it at just the right time. The generation of soldiers who fought these battles is just beginning to die en masse. There have been very few movies to tell their stories in a way they would find respectful and faithful to the truth, and this is certainly the most entertaining of those to have tried. Some decry the realism of the battle scenes as "glorifying violence." I can only comment that those making such claims have obviously not seen the movie, for they would realize that there's not a single scene of gratuitous violence. In fact, the very question of man's tendency towards violence and chaos -- or towards decency and good -- is one of the primary themes.

My grandfather (whom I never met) glidered into Normandy with the 101st Airborne, and survived to the end of the war, only to be killed in an auto accident a year after returning home. I consider this movie, in some strange way, a way of "bonding" with, and saying "thank you" to, my grandfather.

I think every person with a personal or historical interest in WWII would want to view Saving Private Ryan. But, more importantly, I think everyone who has ever said, "Yeah, we should just nuke 'em," or every teenager who ever thought shooting someone was "cool," or everyone who ever spoke poorly of our veterans, should *have* to see it. I have no doubt that a lot of attitudes would change.

Summary: Conveys the horror of war but is the message a mixed one?
Review: Riveting to watch, gripping, at times horrifying, the film makes us realise how appalling it is to fight a war and how cheap life is... but one has a nagging doubt after a while. Are we supposed to admire these men for showing more heroism than was strictly necessary? Was there any point in staying to defend the bridge, rather than blowing it up and retreating? And what are we to make of the final message to Ryan: "earn this" ? Hadn't he earned it already? Nobody else who lived had earned the right to live: the choice in war is random. I'd have preferred a clearer anti-war message rather than the emphasis on heroism.

Summary: Impressive Special Effects
Review: Much better on the big screen, you'll get the feeling after the first minutes of this film that it's going to be long. And after three hours it certainly is. Yes it sends messages, but so did Platoon, Hamburger Hill and Casualties of War. Tom Hanks does his usual superb acting job; this time he's Captain of a young and energetic platoon with more guts than glory as we watch one after another suffer unspeakable mutilation on the battlefield. Matt Damon is Private Ryan, but displays none of the screen charm and eye catching talent of his Good Will Hunting role. The messages are clear that war is brutal and senseless and inhuman and horrid, but after seeing the film three times I'm thinking that Saving Private Ryan is more about showcasing spectacular special effects (Normandy Beach scenes) than about anything else. Watch and see if you don't agree.

Summary: Doesn't hold up on repeat viewings
Review: I saw this movie three times, twice on the big screen -- where it should be seen -- and once on video. After the first viewing, I could barely sit through it again. There were too many plot and dramatic holes. For example, Miller's hand-trembling problem seemed a cheap dramatic gimmick, and it was never resolved. Second, inexplicably, way too many guys dropped down and sobbed like babies. Third, can you imagine how much ham-fisted, pseudo-philosophical dialogue is given to guys debating the reasons for the special treatment accorded to Ryan? Spielberg's technical expertise is squandered on severely mediocre material. This is screenwriting at its most incompetent. And goodness, there's even a stereotype from Brooklyn, Noo Yawk.

Summary: Saving Private Ryan: Saving Hollywood
Review: Just when you thought the great era of War Movies was long over, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg pull out a faith restoring movie.

In the grand style we've come to expect from Spielberg, he and Tom Hanks bring forth an outstanding story. With a script as well written as this, everything else was simply eye and ear candy...but WHAT CANDY! The visual effects of this movie far surpas any of the older war movies.

While I'm a John Wayne fan of high extreams, I'd classify Tom Hank's portraile of a WWII Captain far surpasing of even the Duke! Hurrah and Kudos!

This is a MUST SEE for anyone that has even the slightest ounce of patriotism or emotion. Saving Private Ryan will make you laugh, curse, and at times even cry. If you're looking for a movie to restore your faith in an industry that's turning from storyline to bikini-line, HERE IT IS.

Summary: Leave It to Hollywood
Review: Hollywood depictions of war alway leave something to be desired, and Private Ryan is no exception. There is no denying that the first 30 minutes of this film are some of the most powerful and graphic ever seen. On the other hand, after the beach scene the movie starts to slip down that Hollywood trail. Kudos for the person who made sure that the actors had to keep reloading their weapons. Scowls go out to the scene with the German sniper in the belltower who can't seem to bring himself to shoot targets he can clearly see. Additional scowls to the last battle, Hollywood takes over and a dozen Americans can hold off a million Germans, not the case if you ask a vet! One final word, Tom Hanks was cast out of character here, he just isn't convincing after his appearance oh so long ago in the movie Philadelphia...
