Summary: Disturbing To Some, To Me, Truthful And Realistic.
Review: This movie provides the true horror of World War II, while also providing a 5 star plot and storyline and 5 star acting. "SAVING PRIVATE RYAN" tells the heartpounding and heartcrushing tale of ordinary men, doing extraordinary things. Another great thing is that this story is seen throug the eyes of its leader(Tom Hanks, who plays Captain John Miller) and sometimes the men he leads.

Overall acting: 5 stars: Tom Hanks does an excellent, but quiet job in portraying his role as Captain John Miller. Matt Damon, as Private James Ryan is just as convincing. Also, Jeremy Daives does an great job on expessing his characters emotions and thoughts.

Overall plot: 5 stars: Captain John Miller must take his eight men on a journey through Normandy. They have a mission to carry out, thier mission is to find Private James Ryan, who's other three brothers were killed in combat. Because of this, Private Ryan has a free ticket home. Throughout thier journy, the eight men encounter many troubles, and every wrong decision is faced with horrible consequences.

I would not reccomend this to someone with a weak-stomach. Anyways, the DVD is a great buy, I really enjoyed the special features.

Review: I loved Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan. It is truly one of the best war movies I have ever seen. The brutal battle scenes are extremely bloody and realistic, almost painful to watch. Tom Hanks plays a Captain, John Miller, who is assigned to save a Private James Ryan, from Iowa. He takes the pick of the little from his squad and sets out to find Private Ryan, along the way we watch the men form 'bonds of brotherhood' with one another, and we also watch two of the most beloved men die...This movie is truly incrddible.

Review: ... Now, on the subject of the movie, it is no doupt A sacret war film. Speilburg used filming psychology to give the viewer A sence like being their. The intricate detail ( blood colored sea water, dead fish on the beach etc. ) made the film all more lifelike and will give one who has never had the least bit of violent experiance the deep down sence of "This for sure is what war and killing is really like" not to mention the lifelike sound affects of shockdazes which Miller ( Tom Hanks ) goes in to A few times in the film ( car accident and fireing A 12 guage shotgun indoors put me in them before ) working better wonders to give the viewer A much better sence of what it must have been like for the soldiers. On the other hand, dispite how accurate they made the background gun blast sound, the up close sound of bombs and gun blasts were great but far from authentic and having seen people get kiled before from gunfire ( police shootings ), I have to honnestley say that the bloodshead was very realistic ( probibley the most real to it's date ) but not perfictley realistic wear Enemy at the Gates did A slightley better job. Probibley the grace of the film is that you never see generals or suits except for just that one poetic seen but instead, the movie is entirley focused on the little guy that had it the worst yet, rememberd the least. One other pointer it makes is the relations to how soldiers got to know eachother and with the american spirit, wouldn't let eachother down and how affective it maede america in the war ( compare it to Enemy at the Gates which is A Stalingrad version of SPR. As great as the movie was, their were A few mistakes that seamed to big to be overlooked. The first was on Omaha Beach wear Miller stoops over on the beach in to his shock daze and when he comes out of it and the angle changes, he is back in the watter up to his chest. The one that perhapse stands out the most was taking A machine gun nest when they had A SNIPER on hand and perfict sniper cover at A 170 yard range. To give you A heads up, the first 3 times you watch the movie, you will probibley watch it all the way through but after that, you will probibley stop watching the film after the landing seen is overs since the movie really becomes much slower from then on and some of the soldiers in the squad may affend you with their hot shot rude attitudes which seldomley exists in REAL combat which americans haven't truley seen since Viet Nam. All in all, it is an excelent war film worth watching. I myself think that to get the best of the movie the first time around, it is best to watch the 25 minut documentary on the movie which really gives an impression on what the movie is about, Speilburgs intentions in making the movie and what points the movie is ment to make straight from the hourses mouth. I also found Band of Brothers an excelent adition to the WW II realistic movie collection and works hand in hand with SPR in giving you A very authentic view on the war that our grand parents fought and Enemy at The Gates as A foregn adition would perapse make you feel fortunate that america was never comunist and give you an impression on what the war was like for thoes who had it the worst. It can also lead americans who promote comunism to think twice.

Summary: ENGLISH WHINERS SHUT UP
Review: ...This is a movie produced and filmed by Americans, primarily written for American audiences. If the British want to tell their version of D-Day they should film their own movie. Another English critic blasted the US for not entering the war until after Pearl Harbor....give me a break...if the British and French governments had had any guts they would have stood up to Hitler's demands at Munich and possibly prevented the entire war. Or they could have launched an invasion of Germany prior to May of 1940 and possibly kept France from falling under Nazi occupation. No one has ever said the US won the war by itself, but lets face it, once America entered the war we took on the lion's share of the action in Europe, and played an even greater role in the Pacific. The Brits are still steamed that the USA emerged from the war as a super power, while the sun was sitting on the British Empire.

Summary: Heartbreaking, Brutal film about the horrors of war
Review: I will choose the word 'important' to describe this film, its one of the most moving movies that ever graced celluloid, everyone Black yellow white regardless of creed should watch the opening 30 mins to this film to see that When a bullet hits you it tears you to pieces and you die slowly, and war is not Stallone running around single handedly beating Afghanistan, This is the film that should be shown to every child at an early age a parental guidance rating is what it should have.

To regard this film as entertainment seems immoral, yes its action packed, yes the special effects are fantastic, the story fluid and the acting absolutely 1st class, but the most simple scene had me in tears of the old Private Ryan standing monolithic at the war cemetery of fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for him, the only nice aspect of human nature in the film, otherwise depicting war as the devil it is, blood drenched, claustrophobic, and decadent.

Its so nice to see other reviewers write such poetic editorials of this film, Spielberg certainly deserves the praise.

My Grandparents lived through the Blitz in 1940 when Coventry Cathedral was Bombed for weeks and weeks, they would have loved this film, so If you've never seen a war film, please see this !
If you've seen 100 war films, please please see this !

Summary: This was not meant to be a remake of The Longest Day!
Review: I've noticed that some of our British cousins have an axe to grind with this film because "it's just about Americans" and the British contribution to the D-Day invasion is ignored. If "Saving Private Ryan" had been advertised as the true story of D-Day or as a history of the Normandy campaign then criticisms about the film's American bias would have some merit. However, "Saving Private Ryan" never claimed to be anything but the story of a single squad of American soldiers fighting in the American sector of the Normandy campaign. Thus, the criticisms of the film having an American bias are pointless. Complaining about the lack of Brits in this movie is like complaining about their failure to show up in movies such as "Battleground" or "Attack" which are also about American squads in WWII. "Saving Private Ryan" is Speilberg's attempt to update the "Story of GI Joe" type war movie- a personal look at American soldiers on the battlefield. He was not interested in making an epic about how the Allies won WWII like "The Longest Day."

As for the perceived slur against poor old "Monty." First off- deal with it. Alot worse has been written about Monty than what was said in the movie. It is a fact that many historians and veterans do share the low opinion of Monty that was uttered in the movie. The debate over Montgomery's abilities as a commander is still going strong in some circles, and, unfortunately for the pro-Monty crowd, the historical advisor for "Saving Private Ryan," Stephen Ambrose, is not a Monty fan.

Oh, the landing craft for the Americans on D-Day were manned mostly by U.S. Coast Guard personnel. And Monty's version of how the Normandy campaign was won does not mean it is the correct or accepted version.

Review: Most of us know in our hearts that war is hell, "Saving Private Ryan" showcases this fact abundantly and screen after screen. Realism abounds in this movie with scenes so gore filled they are difficult to watch. Parts of this drama filled tale are documentary like. Watchers will understand the horror of war even better after sitting through this movie. It is a tale worth telling and one worth watching but bloody scene after bloody scene have you cringing with the realism. Great acting, great cast.

Summary: It's this film, not Monty, that is overrated.
Review: This is just another Hollywood war film. Watching this film made me lose all respect (not that I had any to begin with) for Spielberg and Hanks. I can't believe they said Monty was overrated. He was the best allied commander of the war. Typical Yanks, taking all the credit for themselves.
The only reason Monty took his time moving on Caen was because the British and Canadians had to take on the Elite of the German army, including SS Panzer divisions. The U.S. soldiers only had to fight the normal army. It's more American propaganda, making themselves look like the best when that is not the case.

Review: I saw this movie three times and I never grew tired of the picture.
Tom Hanks should have won the best actor oscar for his role. He was calm and quiet but also very believable as an English teacher there to "do a job." No John Wayne heroics in this film--just dog soldiers trying to do a mission, that many did not believe in, and get home.

He gives a strong performance in this role, and you could see his superstar attributes showing here. Watch for Diesal in Knockaround Guys, which is his upcoming movie. (I wouldn't bother with "XXX") Anyways, go catch SPR, and enjoy Vin's role
