Rating: Summary: Put yourself on suicide watch before viewing. Review: An ultra-depressing, ultra-dark, and ultra-overrated form-over-substance exercise in frenetic camera work. And even if you're one of the those clamoring over each other on the worship bandwagon, can you honestly say this is something you like owning and watching more than once? Even in its best lights, this film is very draining to watch and doesn't count anywhere near repeated entertainment value in my book. As for its vaunted theme, is it really "drugs are bad"? I'm not convinced, but since that seems to be the concensus, my two cents on that note: duh.Ignore the hype and try to see a clip of this nightmare-on-a-disc before you shell out the bucks. Chances are that'll give you a good feel for whether it really will be a keeper for you (though my money's on not). This is a good film to help push you over the edge in your darker moments, or as a shining example of why Aronofsky's work is so overrated. Otherwise, it's one to avoid, for your own peace of mind if nothing else (and there's plenty else).
Rating: Summary: One everyone needs to see. Review: Wow. That is pretty much the only word that can summarize this amazing movie. If you have read the preceding reviews, you may already know the summary to this movie. It is about the absolute extreme horrors of drug addiction on the seedy streets of Coney Island. First of all, I would like to say that Ellen Burstyn's stellar performance should have destroyed Julia Roberts' in that other movie. She absolutely steals the entire movie. There also is a bit of humor thrown into the movie in various parts to take away from the super-depressive nature of this film. The score is amazing and fits in perfectly with the movie. If you haven't seen this amazing movie, I would suggest going out and renting it tonight. But, if you are planning to do anything afterwards, you may want to cancel. This movie will completely drain you. Go rent it tonight!
Rating: Summary: Excellent Movie Review: This is a great movie and is not just a movie with great performances even though it has that too. This movie shows addiction through 4 different people all with dreams and hopes of accomplishing something, but all of that is washed away because of their addictions. A good movie to see, I would recommend it to anyone who would enjoy a thought-provoking and haunting movie........ A
Rating: Summary: All I can say Review: All I can say is that this film is nothing more than an after-school special done really well.
Rating: Summary: A great start... Review: Darren Aronofsky's second film and further proof that this is somebody who will have a huge affect on film. His first film "Pi" was a great film which really caught me by surprise. But "Requiem for a Dream" blew me away. The performances were great all the way around and it was a tragedy that it didn't win some Oscars. I felt that this movie or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon should of each taken all the Oscars. This last years Oscars was just further evidence that influence in Hollywood pays for an Oscar. Julia Roberts is the media darling cash cow who gets acclaim as long as she shows the proper amount of skin. Ellen Burstyn's performance is so incredible that it really shows talent that Julia Roberts will never come close to having. I thought Jared Leto was amazing. The film showed his character's love for his mother but his addiction which throws everything down the tubes. This is not a happy drug movie like "Trainspotting" which makes drugs look funny. This movie gets into your soul. It affects me every time I watch it. This is a masterpiece which most of mainstream has written off as another "drug" movie. Please watch this movie, at least rent it. You will not be dissapointed. And if you are, well I heard Adam Sandler has another movie coming out:(
Rating: Summary: Great movie, great acting, a definate collectors item. Review: I personally love movies like this. If you are even reading this page, you must also have an interest in this type of independant film making. I saw both versions of this film. I thought that when I got the Directors cut that there would be a lot more - Perhaps scenes that the rating committee would not approve of. I was wrong. Honestly, I hardly noticed any difference at all. I was expecting more realism from this edition. It is still a great movie, and you might as well get the Directors cut - It does show you deleted scenes....etc.etc.
Rating: Summary: The Agony of the Ecstasy Review: I originally viewed 'Requiem for a Dream' on the first day of its run at the Dobie Theater in Austin, Texas, mid November 2000. At this date I was on the last leg of a two-month road trip through the United States, having in that time witnessed the autumnal changing of colors through the eastern seaboard and experienced the political uproar of what eventually became this country's first (documented) coup de etat. I also had several encounters with drug users and drug dealers over the course of the journey. Trying to relax before beginning the last fifteen hundred miles home, I decided to take in a movie I knew very little about other than what I'd seen on the Moby-scored trailer and a few laurels tossed by various newspaper critics, those articles skimmed so as not to ruin any surprises the movie might have in store. I staggered out of the theater two hours later, exhilarated and exhausted and physically nauseated by this grim tale of broken illusions and abuse. Those of the audience around me displayed similar reactions: wide-eyed, pale in places, struggling to find the words...words that could not adequately express what we had seen and endured. For me, 'Requiem for a Dream' was the climax of my journey, a travelogue full of encounters with drugs and the people that use them...well, the first rush of a climax, anyway, for the prostitute/junkie/schizophrenic I picked up hitchhiking a few hours later was just as harrowing an experience as this movie, in a very similar way: I saw the end result of Jennifer Connely's character ranting and raving and attempting sexual innuendos right before my jaded eyes. This is not a pleasant movie. Nor is it one to be watched again and again, despite the superb cinematography and the incredible acting chops displayed by nearly all involved. But it is a movie that should be viewed by everyone at least once. Love it or hate it, the power of 'Requiem for a Dream' cannot be denied. It sucks you in with hopes and dreams and beautiful illusions, then methodically crushes them one by one. The last scene, a frantic montage of images, documents the depravity in which abusers submit themselves and the physically/emotional/mental cost of synthetic pleasure; it strips away the Calvin Klien glamour of herion and shows this narcotic for what it is: the refinement of misery. In my opinion this movie should become mandatory curriculum for high school drug-education classes.
Rating: Summary: wow Review: this movie is more than a series of great performances, most notably Ellen Burstyn's. It is about addidction in America, this film is a movie that should be required viewing for every high school student.
Rating: Summary: WOW! Review: This is the "Mr. Toads Wild Ride" shocking depiction of life within the rapture of severe drug addiction. In my opinion, it is a worst case scenario adventure. But none of this "over the top" dramatic Hollywood spectacle is why I loved this movie. For me, there are two very significant scenes that make this movie "Live" its title. One scene is around the middle of the film and the other scene (actually a set of related scenes) is at the end. I would like to warn you that this is a film lovers film. Not a piece of Hollywood entertainment. For some people, this could be a disturbing movie. For those who prefer film as art, this is a fantastic piece of work! To me it is the film title that begs the question; what are the requirements for a dream? I feel the writer and or director are showing us that life is usually so far removed from our dreams, that we have long forgotten to ask the question; what happened to the dreams I had? When you watch this movie, think about the title, how could you not? I would like to recommend this movie to anyone who has ever wondered what life has done to their dreams. This film is on the far side of the spectrum of shattered dreams, but it should still hit home for most of us. If you are an optimist, like myself, you will not be depressed by this movie, you will be instead, inspired!
Rating: Summary: Ellen Burstyn Should Demand a Recount Review: I believe my title says all you need to know about this film!!
