Review: This movie has so many outstanding character portrayals. When you are finished watching you almost want to start it over again from the beginning. That's how powerful this movie can be. The soundtrack is also a must own for any lover of classic rock.

Summary: Excellent movie - single disc version only
Review: Glad that the producers decided to release the single-disc version, not forcing 100% of the people to buy the 3 disc "special edition" for 35 bucks. The only reason I want the single-disc version is because the movie itself is the artwork. Nothing else the producers throw in is art. Documentaries, while interesting, only hold my attention for a single viewing, and therefore don't make it worth my while to pay double for that sort of "extra." Deleted scenes, too, are interesting, but I NEVER watch them more than once. Generalization: there is nothing besides the movie that is worthy of a 2nd viewing, and therefore it is not worth paying for. Back to the movie. An absolutely excellent, warm film. Glad I was able to buy this as a single disc version only, or I would not have bought it (but at least I would have saved my money).

Review: This is one of the best dvds - I can watch it over and over. Cameron Crowe's commentary with his mom is too funny - listening to her recall some of the scenes in the movie from her actual life makes Frances McDormand's performance all the better.
A must have for any rock and roll faithful.

Summary: Saving Rock & Roll
Review: Somewhere in the movie, this line is utters: "You don't have a choice when it comes to music... true music finds you." Gems like this only come from the pen of Cameron Crowe and while this is the type of movie that everyone will love, you'll feel the passion if you're in on the same music fan wavelength that Crowe is. There are several touching scenes; Crowe takes some soulful rock & roll tunes and sets them to scenes that he always knew deserves to be played out to. It's like when you play a song, you have a picture of a scene, a setting, a situation that it plays to, and Crowe makes that come to life.

Review: Almost Famous is the best movie I've ever seen...and probably ever will see. I was born a generation too late to experience the 60's and 70's (grr) but I got a pretty good idea of what they were like. I liked how at the beginning the kid is going through all the records..I thought that was neat.
That movie was the best!

Summary: Coming of Age in All Its Various Guises
Review: This movie is one about coming of age through change. It follows three main characters: a young writer for Rolling Stone, the leader of a Led Zeppelin-like band in the 70's, and a beautiful groupie. Each person is faced with intense highs and terrible tragedies at the hands of the others throughout the story. The strength of the movie is that, instead of shoehorning the characters into roles and making them tragic heroes, it instead makes the events change them. By the end, it's the Rock hero that looks up to the writer, the suicidal groupie that mothers the other two into an understanding, and the aspiring writer who fails at writing but still finds his dream. A huge part of the movie is probably the soundtrack, a collection of original works and the best soaring rock of the 1970's. Excellent movie. Even when it falls into the trap of being saccharine, it at least avoids seeming contrived. I would recommend it to any nostalgic baby boomer, confused teenager, or wild gen-Xer.

Summary: Love, love and more love
Review: It's obvious that this movie is a touching homage to the people and places that helped to color Cameron Crowe's technicolor life. This film was obviously created with such love - every actor is precisely perfect for his/her part, and the production shines with TLC. Watching the director's commentary, I could really tell that Cameron Crowe put so much attention and detail into each scene - he seems to have the directorial ability to be a real perfectionist without alienating people. I love the fact that he played music while filming to get people "in the mood". He really seems to be a genuine person.
I was born in 1969, so unfortunately I missed out on a lot of the "good times", but after I saw this for the first time in the theater, I remember walking out and saying, "I knew it! I knew it, I knew it!" It was just like I'd always pictured. The story has such magic and meaning behind it, from the story of the "real Pennie Lane" to the story of the "spirit of Lester Bangs" to the many homages to different films and artists. Kate Hudson absolutely took my breath away. There is a scene near the end where she conveys so much raw emotion and pain and beauty with such few words - the look in her eyes makes my heart hurt. And Phillip Seymour Hoffman is brilliant - he is one of the best actors around! Laughter, passion, brilliance, beastliness, all adorned with a seventies plumage of passion - this film is marvelous.

Review: If you like movies about great 70's rock bands you'll love this. Almost famous is about a seventeen year old boy, who get's a job with rollin stone magazine. They send him to do a story on a band called "Still Water". Once he's there, he realizes that being a rock star is not what it's cracked up to be. This is a must see if you like movies that are filled with good music and a good story line.
