Summary: AWESOME!!!
Review: I first saw this movie after reading the play in my 9th grade english class and we compared it to the older version. In my opinon, the new movie is soooooooo much better that the old one.

Summary: I spent more money to see this film then they did to film it
Review: William Shakespeare must have been turning over in his grave after what they did to his popular tale. I have never been a fan of Romeo and Juliet (I think Hamlet is much better) but even I know the butchering of a classic play when I see one. Leonardo and Claire are good actors, and in this peice of trash they play a modern-day Romeo and Juliet. Even though it is set in the nineties, they still stick to the original script, even though half of it is cut for the sake of those who get tired of Shakespeare, (why they get tired of him, I don't know).

Now I know that Hollywood has had some pretty bad follies before, but this film is beyond the area in which I draw the line. They should be ashamed of themselves. If you have to watch a version of ROMEO AND JULIET I'd highly reccomend either WEST SIDE STORY or the Franco Zefferelli version.

Summary: You're going to cry!
Review: You are so going to cry when you watch this. Not because it sucks so bad, but because it's soooooo sad! I personally love this movie and it's my all time favorite, but i'll say it's different. They talk like "thee" and "thy" all the time. This movie is for people who can handle romance and aren't shallow. Leo is so hot! Anyway, i cried for hours after i saw this. YOU HAVE TO GET IT!

Summary: Bach music with rap drum beat
Review: I had to make myself forget that it is Mr. Shakespere's play in order to continue watching the movie. The whole thing is a joke--modern people speak Shakespere's language. A comidy, but a tragedy. It is like playing Bach's music with the drum beat of rap music. I am not saying that it is bad movie. It just spoils the flavor of Shakespere's play.

Summary: This is not for people who hate Shakespeare!!!!!
Review: First of all, let me say to those who gave this movie just one star, you just hate Shakespeare!!! When Shakespeare wrote this over 400 years ago, he was telling a love story that was meant to be for all generations. The reason why Romeo was updated is so that the MTV generation could enjoy it just like me. This is a must show in English class. If you enjoy this play (even though it is a movie) like I do, you might want to check out Shakespeare's other play "Hamlet" with Kennth Branagh. It is good also.

Summary: Will the Shakespeare Purists please sit down and shut up?
Review: Just finished watching Romeo and Juliet. I LOVED IT!!!! I don't see what the problems were that everyone had with it. Solid, likeable supporting cast; clear, honest direction with neat, innovative twists; a great conceptual approach; and even though I don't care much for L. DeCapprio, he and Danes did a wonderful job, making up for their weakness in handling the language with their enthusiasm and chemistry. I think people forget that most Shakespearean actors don't become masters of their craft overnight, instead taking years of study, practice and performances to get to the point where they are conversant with the language and demands. As good a Branaugh is, he didn't just wake up one day, said "I'll be a Shakespearean actor" and became instantly brilliant. He worked at it. And the script calls for a pair of teenagers, so what are you going to do? Oh, and as for all those "purists" out there that took exception with the conceptual form of presentation: get a life. If anything, they should be marveling at and celebrating the fact that no matter what you do with one of the Bard's scripts, it never loses its power, its meaning, its ability to reach out and grab us, shake us, make us sit up and take notice! Name another playwrite whose works contain such qualities and potential for adaptation. I'm sure these same stick-in-the-mud types would have found fault with Patrick Stewart's high-concept production of Othello, wherein all the roles were reversed, with Othello being white and the rest of the cast black. A negative Othello! How novel. Whether done "traditionally" (whatever that is) or done with high concept, the Bard's works endue and often surprise us with new insights and understandings. Very clever, by the way, the use of guns as swords, linking the roguish gangs of Verona with the gangs of today's cities. The more things change, the more they remain the same. Not all the much new under the sun, after all. Anyway, rent this puppy, loosen up, and leave your snottiness at the door. You might - Heaven forbid - find that you like it.

Summary: Astoundingly stylish!
Review: I hadn't planned to watch this movie. But a young friend made me promise to watch it when it came to cable. I assumed it would be some hokey Gen X version that I would have no interest in. Besides, I have no real interest in Shakespere. Anyway, it came to cable, and I watched it. Looks like I'll have to eat crow. I was absolutely stunned by its audacious stylishness. It was a romp from beginning to end. Everyone gave superb performances, except for DiCaprio and Daines, who were merely good enough. They could have found a sexier woman to play Juliet. John Leguizamo and Harold Perrineau Jr. gave especially noteworthy performances. It was a real delight to watch these thoroughly modern characters so effortlessly speak Elizabethan english. Is this a serious and faithful adaptation of the play? Of course not, but who cares? It's just plain fun. This is definitely on my list of cinematic "guilty pleasures."

Summary: My Favorite Flic
Review: Hi, to whoever's reading this, thanks for taking the time to see what I have to say. I won't say that this was one of the most brilliant movies ever, even though I think so, cause that's my opinion. If you have not seen it yet, you should watch it. Shakespeare is my favorite writer and also one of the most awesome, influential people in the entire history of man. He's able to capture you in two hours and not let you go. Romeo and Juliet is a passionate, beautifully written love story that takes in the kind of love everyone dreams about. I must admit that I rented the movie at first for two reasons: because I was a huge fan of Shakespeare and had read the story hundreds of times already, and also because of well...Leonardo DiCaprio. (He is pretty hot, you have to admit). Anyways, to all those who hated this movie, open your mind! The performances were not perfect I know, but who is perfect anyway? They all put forth their best effort. In the end, it became a popular, amazing movie that's great for couples to watch together!
