Rating: Summary: Gangs Of New York Review: Gangs Of New York is a good movie, but it's boring inthe middle, yhey just talk, thats is why it gets 4 stars...But I recommend you to se it!
Rating: Summary: Totally Riveted to my Seat Review: This should have won "Best Picture" of 2002 or 2003 for that matter! Daniel Day Lewis was brilliant, the scene with him telling the police commissner of a dead rabbit hanging on a fence stays with me to this day, I mean how would you make a dead rabbit on a fence sound intriging? Well, you would do it the way Danial Day Lewis does it. Martin Scorsese can tell a story better then most men and his directing is even better! If you missed the movie when it was released, then buy the DVD, if you saw the movie, buy the DVD. I have been waiting like a kid for Christmas waiting for this movie, it's kind of nice to have Christmas in July
Rating: Summary: DISAPPOINTING!!! Review: I was expecting more interesting NY stories than this one, especially from Scorsese. The title is "Gangs of New York," but you only learn about 2 gangs, one with DiCaprio's character and the other with the Day Lewis'. They showed tiny clips of other gangs, that looked a great deal more interesting but they focused on the same two, dull ones throughout. Too long..........YAWN!
Rating: Summary: Terrible Review: Don't buy into the hype, this was one of the worst movies of 2002. The acting was marginal, except for Daniel Day Lewis who did a great job. The story line was terrible. The script is terrible. How much symbolism do you need in one movie? I would not suggest this movies to one person, it'll have you wishing you had 2 hours back in your life.
Rating: Summary: A lot to chew on... Review: Well, I'm a big fan of Scorsese's work. And while this film has a brilliant performance by Daniel Day-Lewis as Bill the Butcher, the film as a whole is a tough one to enjoy. It's far too long and aspires to be a sort of historical document to this period in New York. The core story - the relationship between Bill the Butcher and Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio) - is very promising, but Scorsese seems willing to take up every available tangent and in the process delivers a tiring, disjointed film. Even as the film reaches it's climax we find we've got another twenty minutes to go. Scorsese is one of the finest filmmakers of our time, but he may have been too close to this story. This is arguably the best work from actor Daniel Day-Lewis and the film may be worth watching on that basis alone. But I'd have a hard time sitting through it again.
Rating: Summary: an outstanding film!!! Review: i encourage everyone who reads this to go out and buy this movie on july 1st. it was outstanding. i am not just saying this because i am a huge leo fan!! many people have commented on the fact that there is a lot of racisim in this film, but it's neccesary to show what kind of world it was back then. i thought this movie was great. i got the soundtrack and the movie book which are both very good. i can't wait until the movie comes out!!!
Rating: Summary: Not what I expected from Scorsese Review: I've been a great fan of Scorsese's films, and I appreciate how deep he go into his films to portray a certain story in the past. However, "Gangs of New York" is not about NYC's past, or history, is about a family feud between two misfits who fight for the same reasons that every current war derives, including Mr. Bush's. Well, I think for this period of time is a political correct movie, but for someone who gave us "Taxi Driver", "Mean Streets", "Last Temptation of Christ", "Goodfellas", "The end of Innocence", among others, is definitly a step back, just like or current world.
Rating: Summary: Yongjoon writes Review: If anyone is interested in watching a venerable film maker fall from grace, Gangs of New York should be your cup of tea. The film is listed as one of the five Best Picture nominees for the Oscars, but anyone who has seen the film will know that it is a testament to the campaigning savvy of Miramax and the degree of guilt the academy feels for Martin Scorsese, not the quality of the film. Actually, the film was a long conceived idea for Scorsese who had harbored the thoughts of making a grand epic on the origins of New York for nearly two decades. Many fans of Scorsese were excited when news of the production were let out. After all this was the director who gave them countless classics such as Taxi Driver ,Raging Bull, Meanstreets ,and Goodfellas to name a few. But then there were the news of the casting. Leonardo Dicaprio signed up to play the lead, followed by Cameron Diaz who was to perform the love interest. With each new announcement of the casting, fans grew nervous. In fact the only good news was that Daniel Day-Lewis, who had been living the life of a recluse somewhere in Italy for some years now, decided to come back to the big screen away from his simple life as a shoe cobbler.(he had previously sworn off acting in pursuit of 'something more real' ,to quote his words.) The result? Disastrous. The film is a disjointed mess. It cannot seem to make up its mind as to what it wants to be. Is it a tale of revenge where the villain finally gets his comeuppance? Maybe. Is it a tableau of the incipient New York amidst the turmoils of the Civil War? Sure, why not. The film attempts to cover so many things at once that it loses its focus. It is true that such tasks are daunting and shortcomings as the ones we see should be forgiven when a novice director helms the film. But Martin Scorsese? Movie-goers expect a lot more from the consummate film-maker than this jumbled garbage. The story is nothing remarkable. It centers on a man named Amsterdam who is the son of the leader of 'Dead Rabbits' -one of the five gangs that control New York. At the opening of the movie it wages a gang war against the 'Natives'- a rival faction led by 'Bill the Butcher'(played by Daniel Day-Lewis). Amsterdam's father dies in a tragic fashion by the hands of 'Bill the Butcher'. Subsequently the 'Dead Rabbits' are disbanded and Amsterdam is sent to a juvenile penitentiary from which he reemerges as a fully grown man. Twenty years later he returns to New York, unrecognized by anyone. By bizarre quirk of fate he then stumbles into the right-hand-man position for 'Bill the Butcher' who now controls much of New York. Amsterdam begins to languish over the trust given to him by the murderer of his father, and his desire to revenge. All the while the city seethes with rising discontent as the Union Army forces conscription on the growing number of immigrants. Without giving too much away, the plot does resolves itself in the manner most viewers expect, but the emotional payoff is not quite satisfying. By introducing extraneous elements , Scorsese dilutes the impact of what should have been an exhilarating finale. First things first, Daniel Day-Lewis delivers. His ruthless 'Bill the Butcher' should come down as one of the most memorable villains in all of movie history. Day-Lewis's performance has an operatic brilliance, a direct contrast to another great, albeit subdued performance by Jack Nicholson. As it stands, it is a close race between the two for Best Actor. Come Oscar day, it wouldn't be such an upset if he ends up trumping the current Oscar favorite Jack Nicholson. But that's about the only redeeming feature of this film. The rest is hammy acting through and through. Leonardo Dicaprio is miscast for the character, so despite his earnest effort the audience cannot quite connect. On the other hand Cameron Diaz is simply atrocious. Recalling the details of her appalling performance brings me too much pain, so I will just leave it at that. The set looks expensive, but the story doesn't seem to warrant such extravagance. On a further note, there is raw violence abound, a typical trait in a Scorsese movie. Although one cannot label its use in the film as exploitive, some viewers will find it difficult to stomach. All in all Gangs of New York is a disappointment. Chances are, Martin Scorsese will most likely be rewarded with a Best Director Oscar this year. It is a shame that he will have to be remembered for this mediocre film when his past accomplishments are so much better.
Rating: Summary: a film worthy of it's lofty expectations Review: Imagine a time when you wake up and that is the best part of your day. Martin Scorsese's immense film, Gangs of NY, is a decent into hell. A trip into a world so very unlike any we've encountered in the 20th century. The brutality is shocking and the way of life even more so. Indeed Mr Scorsese's intentions were to educate and this he does unabashedly. We all know Scorsese's city is New York. From Mean Streets to Age of Innocence, from Bringing out the Dead to Goodfellas, he has explored this city which so enthralls him. Perhaps it is these explorations which led him to Gangs. He had done a period piece based in NYC in Age, but now we're faced with something different. Gangs is a period piece, yes, but unlike any other. It's a period of forgotten time, of a time that was meant to be forgotten. However, Scorsese digs deep. he bases his characters on real-life old-world New Yorkers. Leo DiCaprio's Amsterdam Vallon is our hero. Son of a slain local hero, Vallon is bent on avenging his father's death years later. Enter Bill the Butcher, portrayed by Daniel Day Lewis, the killer of Vallon's father and the true star of the film. Vallon works to gain Bill's trust and does, thus raising questions from the audience as to Vallon's true intentions. The plot is character driven but the scenary is what one must appreciate in this film. The opening shots are, in a word, spectacular. Scorsese recreates 19th century NYC so vividly, you imagine a place like this does exist. Five stars for gutsy, original, and captivating story-telling. The acting of Lewis is bar none and Scorsese's direction will lead you to the edge of your seat. Simply riveting.
Rating: Summary: A TRIBUTE TO NEW YORK Review: Excellent movie. Great themes. If only people could look past the length and get to the deep roots of the story. Get to the struggle that the people had at the times. I thought that this was a great movie and Daniel Day-Lewis is an amazing actor. He really blew me away...
