Rating: Summary: The best movie I've seen in some time.. Review: I loved this film. Historically accurate? Don't know, don't care. It's a well told story. I've read many of the reviews here and I crack up at people who refuse to give DiCaprio credit as an actor. He is a great talent, and I'm as jealous of his looks as everybody else, but I give credit where it's due. He did well. Was he miscast? I don't think so. Keanu Reeves playing Johnathan Harker and Winona Ryder playing Mina in "Bram Stoker's Dracula", THAT'S miscasting! DiCaprio did his job well, though the real star of this is Daniel Day-Lewis. I mean, WOW. How intense and intimidating can one man be? He was something else!A Martin Scorsese film called "Gangs of New York" and people here are bashing it because of the violence as if it wasn't supposed to be there. It cracks me up how dumb people are. To quote Turkish from the movie "Snatch"; "What do you expect a grease-down and a shiatsu?" The only gripe I have is when DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz are about to do the nasty, it's time to switch to disc two! WTF? Talk about pouring cold water over a scene! But that's not Scorsese's fault. That's the people who made the DVD's doing. Was that some kind of mean joke?! And why is the movie on two discs anyway? Couldn't they put the movie on one and the extras on another? For that, they lose 1 star! I was disappointed with the "rumble" at the end, if you can call two gangs meeting and then being blown apart by cannon-fire a rumble. Still, I can't say too many bad things about this. I thought it is definitely worth owning, and while opinions are various, you can listen to the people who disliked it over historical accurateness, the so-called miscasting of Leonardo DiCaprio or the violence that anyone going in should be aware of, or you could give it the benefit of the doubt, rent it I bet most of you won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Wonderfull !!! Review: This was the best movie I've seen for ages and the best one in 2002! The actors play well but Daniel Day Lewis and Cameron Diaz are simply amazing!!!! The set is wonderfully made, everything is perfectly reconstructed as it was at the time. I was really interested to discover more about NYC history and I wasn't disappointed. The movie is just a little too violent, but it really was like that in the 19th century. I simply loved it, I saw it twice and I'm going to buy the DVD.
Rating: Summary: Great but not the best Review: This movie is definitely worth seeing, perhaps even buying. But it is by no means Scorsese's best film. Overblown production immediately comes to mind, a la "Gladiator". My biggest complaint, however, is that this movie sadly lacks the rich humor and irony that infuse his very best movies, such as "Taxi Driver", "Goodfellas", and "Bringing Out the Dead". It also lacks his cinematic playfulness and merely seems heavy-handed, just like "Age of Innocence".
Rating: Summary: Wow. Review: A masterpiece, plain and simple. Deserving 10, if not 20 Oscars which it didn't win. A classic. Now that that is out of the way, let me go on a little rant. To the reviewer that said "Science Fiction" as the title of their review, films are NOT documentaries. They are meant as a form of entertainment, not too educate, get that through your skull. As for the fight in the beginning, that happened all the time in this period in this city - cops were there solely to keep the poor from assaulting the rich. As for the most sophisticated city, research the history of New York. It is gory, blood soaked, corrupt, and violent in this period. Scorsese (a person worthy of Kubrick-like praise if there ever was one) captured this very well. Research before you make stupid claims. As for the people that say DiCaprio can't act...what is wrong with you? The man can act, and act well. I mean, jealousy must be behind these claims. That, or you still believe it's "cool" to hate anything involved with Titanic (a very good film once you get past the cheesy love story), which it isn't. Open your eyes and your mind for once and enjoy the film. As for Day-Lewis, he does an amazing job, worthy of Marlon Brando in "On the Waterfront". Him being passed up for the uninspired performance of Adrien Brody, just goes too show the Academy Awards aren't based on the best in each category, but most publicly accepted. So, just see this film, avoiding the nay-sayers. I'm almost positive you'll at least enjoy, if not love it.
Rating: Summary: An okay movie... Review: I watched this the other night, and I was impressed, partly. It wasn't an astounding movie, one that I believed deserved any oscars, but it was good. One thing I couldn't get over was how fake-looking the opening fight scene was. And if something looks fake in the beginning, it's hard to get a feel for it. The acting was OK. Daniel Day-Lewis was ok, but Leo and Cameron were much better. You could actually feel their roles---a little. All around, it's good to watch for historical value, and I now know why Roman Polanski won the oscar.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I loved this movie, mostly because i am an irish catholic. I thought that Leo had a great irish accent and that the acting was incredible! My all time favorite movie.
Rating: Summary: Obviously a Minority Report Review: The rave reviews of THE GANGS OF NEW YORK make me feel as though I missed something. But in electing to wait until this noisy mess of a film came out on DVD I was able to watch it without the star-influenced clutter of a movie house screening. Martin Scorsese has made some fine films, but this overstuffed, empty attempt at producing an epic in the form of Grand Old Hollywood days is so full of errors, fake fighting, overblown and overstated scenic clutter, and just plain phoniness that it is hard to stay with it. The constant background music of Irish tunes is distracting, the acting is stagey and, with the exception of Danien Day-Lewis, is miscast. Perhaps someone thought that putting big names like DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz might help this treacly plot, but it only shows their relative lack of resources. This is an overlong, tired movie, recommended only for those in need of a somnolent.
Rating: Summary: Gnags of New York DVD Reviewed Review: Gangs of New York was probably my favorite movie of 2002, I ended up seeing it in the theater 4 times. I love the way this movie turned out, even Leonardo DiCaprio was decent. But the one thing that set this movie apart from any other I have seen in memory, is the acting job done by Daniel Day-Lewis. Incredible, I was so into his role I was convinced that he was actually Bill the Butcher in real life. Just plain menacing. His way of speaking was just so fresh and uncommon for a historical film, and I loved every minute of it. On to the DVD. I have been counting down the days for this to be released on DVD, and yesterday I flew out to the store on my lunch break to pick it up. Ok, the cover art was changed from what I had seen earlier on movie theater posters, which in my opinion, was much better. On the cover there is that big huge stone gray box proclaiming "10 ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATIONS", yet the film was robbed completely of awards it so much deserved. Opening the 2-Disc keep case, I was COMPLETELY shocked to find there was no booklet inside. What happened here folks??? Just a plain case with mediocre layout, no booklet, and two discs. A little disappointed, but I bought the movie for the movie, not for the case. On to the First disc. Because of the length of the film, and the full length audio commentary track by Martin Scorsese, the film has been split into two parts on two discs. Special features are located on both. The menus are not bad, but could have been better, with parts of the film score playing quietly in the background. Watching the movie, the colors are very vibrant, and have deep blacks. Some scenes however, make the colors TOO vibrant, and almost burned out looking,(Example: When Bill comes riding in on the fire wagon, the light on the front is almost fluorescent magenta! Same with the fireworks scenes.) Audio is ok as well, but not what I expected. Shouts in the main square scenes echo almost unrealistically, and some shouts were almost too quiet to be a shout. Special features are great, with the one major disappointment being the "Sneak Peeks" option. Basically what we have is about 8 full previews for different Miramax titles. Couldn't that have been left out? A little shameless marketing can't hurt I guess. All in all, for a movie I rated 9 out of 5 stars, I have to give a rating of 3 stars for the DVD. For such an epic, I feel it deserved a much more refined treatment in all areas. God Bless DVD.
Rating: Summary: Very dissapointed... Review: I think that this film was lacking....a lot. There was little depth to the characters even after the first 90 minutes. Who are these people? The quick flash of introductions of gangs left no time for absorption. The romantic aspect with the female was boring to say the least and I didn't see any reason for that character to be in the film. It just dragged the film out about an extra half hour..maybe longer. I wish Speilberg had directed this film or Kevin Costner even (with a better script). Like Shindlers List or Dances With Wolves, I think it would have given me a more dead-on feel of the times. Maybe I could have cared about the characters instead of just watching them run around punching and cutting each other. Then there was the awkward flash to the rich folks...where they talked about what was going on - as if they were narraters. Sorry, it was just too hollywood and I learned next to nothing.
