Summary: One of the Best of 2002
Review: Finally, Martin Scorscese comes out with a film with such potential that it will make top ten of all time lists for years to come. I recommend this movie to any person that is not squeamish. Yes, I must note that there were many parts of the movie that are quite bloody. But the acting and the story and the music and the costumes ALL make up for it. Here are the four reasons you MUST see this movie, and why you will love it.1. Daniel Day-Lewis: This man made the movie what it was. He so passionately played Bill the Butcher that it overshadowed the other well-done roles, notibly Cameron Diaz, who I thought was not as bad as people have said she was. He, by far, deserved the Oscar for Best Actor over Adrien Brody from "The Pianist." I did not think so until I actually saw the whole movie. Boy, was I mistaken. 2. Revenge!: This movie is the greatest revenge film of all time. Not only did it add a twist by having Amsterdam (Leonardo DiCaprio) become part of Bill's gang to gain his confidence, but the actors also helped everything along by conveying their shock and hatred so incredibly well. Every thing about the plot was so well crafted that it sucks you in. 3. Good Old Irish Music: Throughout the movie there are little segments of Irish tunes being played in the backround. Sometimes you feel it is out of place. To me, that was the magic. It seemed like behind all of the fun and happiness that came along with owning everything, there was always a conflict and always a battle, mental and physical. It really added a lot to the film. 4. Beautiful Costumes: One essential part of displaying the culture of Old New York were, obviously, the costumes. But these weren't your normal costumes. There were top hats and flashy, colorful gowns and splendid gold buttons and astounding gang symbols. It all created an atmosphere so different than ours that you felt as if you were actually there, in a way. There are the four reasons why you should see this movie. Here are a few disclaimers, though. This is not a family film. It has nudity in some parts and implied sex in others. And the violance can be over the top. There was one scene where an enormous puddle of blood was being splashed in by a few policemen. I think that says it all. And one or two parts may put you to sleep. But remember, none of this can overshadow the epic proportions of everything else. Bottom Line: Wow! (I give it an A+)

Summary: One Of Scorsese's Best
Review: Many will disagree with me on that comment, but I feel it's true. Daniel Day-Lewis steals this one by a long shot. This is HIS film. Forget Leo...Leo who? I swear, when you watch this, you can't wait until you see the character of the Butcher again. Though it is long, it plays a lot shorter than the actual length. The only real bummer is that the DVD is split in two with the movie playing in full length over the course of two discs. That aside, this is one of the greatest films of 2002, and shame on the Academy for not awarding Lewis on his performance.

Summary: WORST FILM EVER!!
Review: OMG I ordered this movie on pay per view at night and it was almost as bad as the 13th Warrior... I just kept watching and watching waiting for the "plot" to come out and it never did... TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE. Please for the sake of your self-dignity don't order this TERRIBLY overrated movie... aesthetic ... yeah right!

Summary: Could have been brilliant...
Review: I have to start off by impressing that Daniel Day-Lewis was phenomenal. His performance alone makes this film worth watching, and the special effects w/ a beautifully reconstructed youthful New York are also a sight to behold. Beyond these points, the film was mediocre at best. The plot was the same old regurgitated tale of a boy who sets out to avenge his father's death by falling in alongside the murderer (Day-Lewis) to gain trust and look for the chance to strike. The plot is accentuated with the introduction of a beautiful girl (Diaz) and the jealous best friend, and complicated when Day-Lewis uncovers the vengeful plan. Nothing novel as far as the plot is concerned, and the cast (with the obvious exception of Daniel Day-Lewis) adds nothing. Well, Diaz adds some good looks. This film was stretched in length to make it Oscar-worthy, but was an overall poor submission.

Summary: Almost Perfect
Review: I regret not seeing this film in theaters, I was really missing out. Well done, well written, and well performed. Gangs of New York city kept my interest until the end. Definet must see for many people.

Review: Maybe the portrayal of NY in the 1800's was accurate, but still very poorly done. The movie lacks credibility. I had a hard time sitting through it. No one character engages the viewer; and no coherent theme emerges. Chaotic and busy...not one that I recommend.

Summary: Puzzling edition of the movie
Review: Warning: Inexplicably, the DVD edition of Gangs of New York divides the movie over 2 discs. I find this very strange, considering the movie's length. Its long, but not that long! I thought maybe it could have been done in order to somehow preserve a higher quality picture standard, but if that is the case why do both of the discs have a ton of features on each? They could have easily put the movie on one disc and the bonus features on the other. And anyway there are plenty of longer movies on one disc like 2001 and Apocalypse Now Redux, and look great on one disc. What gives? And not only did they split the movie over 2 discs, but the 1st disc ends in the middle of a scene! A visual cutaway-edit that was previously stylish and interesting is now jarring because you have to change discs right in the middle of it. They could have at least chosen a more appropriate time to end the first disc. Add a star if you're seeing this excellent movie for the first time, but subtract one if you've seen the movie and the idea of changing discs mid-scene bothers you. The VHS version is on one tape! VHS! Come on!

Summary: You have got to be KIDDING me
Review: As a fan of all types of movies in various genres and with a taste for historical drama I just can't believe this flick is even considered to be passable. About the only redeeming quality was the expose on the Five Points in the mid 1800's. Insipid plot lines, wacky dramatic acting (are we expected to believe the DD Lewis character is crying over a dead rabbit after dispatching a dozen men at least with various knives, hence his name the butcher...). See it if you must but don't expect to be impressed, Scorcese was out to lunch on this one...

Summary: A One-sided Vision of Humanity
Review: Technically and artistically brilliant, the film suffers from a warped perspective of humanity. Only dark motivations are portrayed: hatred, vengeance, lust, desire for power. Forgiveness, love, gentleness, nobility--all are missing. (Save for one brief moment for the character elected mayor, and that ends in 20 seconds with a hatchet in his back.) Even the missionaries appear to be deluded fools. The major characters show no sign of personal growth (other than power, skill in murder, etc.). If you want to watch a movie that seeks to convince you that people are animals--that even President Lincoln was the moral equal of a bloodthirsty gang leader, then this is the film for you. If you want a film that shows the redemption of the violent, check out "The Mission" with Robert DeNiro and Jeremy Irons.
