Summary: STRANGE-BUT-TRUE!!! A WELL-MADE DRAMA!!!
Review: "A Beautiful Mind" is a well made drama chronicling events in the life of John Nash, a genius with schitzophrenia. I particularly thought that his willingness to fight this disease without medication or shock therapy (after several failed attempts to do so) was really stupid, but it proved to work out just fine! All the actors give fine performances in this film (even those who play the "imaginations" are good). A good, solid film! Grade: A-

Summary: I was hooked beautifully!
Review: Never mind that Russell Crowe did not receive the Oscar for his brillant performance -- still mad about that; and never mind that the script was so brillant -- still in awe about that; and never mind that I was so completely taken in by the story, the acting and directing -- the conclusion was the best ending to a wonderful story I have ever seen. In fact, I have seen it close to 25 times and I'm still surprised, still entertained, and still in awe of all who had a part in it's production. Never mind, my sense of respect and admiration for the man and woman this film tells us about. Wonderful film. Wonderful performances. Wonderful story.

Summary: worth a second view
Review: If you have seen the movie or DVD there is little I can tell you that you don't already know. The second time you view this movie you will spot the details that you should have caught the first time around. For example the girl running around the birds in the park, but the birds don't fly away and there are others as well that catch now that you know what to look for in the movie. But beyond all that the movie is a heart felt and teaches us all by giving us insight to a world none of us can image on our own. In the end the story comes to a dynamic summation point, the meanling of life, love. For without it life is meanlingless and sanity is merely a dream.

Summary: Read the book instead for the real story
Review: Beautiful Mind (2001), starring Russel Crowe and Jennifer Conneley, is a decent movie. It's well acted and well directed by Ron Howard. It's largely based on the biography of the same title by Sylvia Nassar (1998). However, in order to "Hollywood-ize" the story, a great deal of detail and "reality" were dropped.My main beef with the movie is that it's depiction of schizophrenia is ludicrous...basically, the entire disease is trivialized as visual hallucinations. Even the movie's ending makes no sense where John Nash is depicted as still suffering from seeing imaginary people. Anyone who knows the true story knows that Nash today, if not entirely cured, doesn't see imaginary people and never did! For the true story, and all the messy details that come with real-life, read the book instead.

Summary: A Beautiful Actor...
Review: I received this DVD as a Christmas Present, and I cannot even BEGIN to recall how many times I have watched it! Put simply, it is one of the BEST movies I have ever seen. The only complaint that I have is that Russell Crowe was not awarded the Oscar for Best Actor. He is a brilliant, beautiful actor, and "A Beautiful Mind" would have never won Best Picture without him!

Review: This movie is beautiful. To me, it is by far my favorite movie which overshadowed even 'Lord of the rings' and 'Godfather'. There are two main reasons for that. The first reason is I am an avid student in Economics: the story of the genius and the game theory fascinate me the most - hardly find another movie in this genre. The second reason is the great performance of Russell Crowe. If anyone have seen 'Gladiator', 'the Insider' and 'LA Confidential', you will realize the real acting talent of Russell. The characters in this four movies are very different kind of personalities, but Russell can just pull them all off beautifully. I believe he is the best actor in his generation.

Summary: Great movie
Review: A Beautiful Mind is the touching story of John Nash, the brilliant mathematical genius who suffers from delusional paranoia, better known as schezophrenia. Nash is played beautifully by the talented Russell Crowe, whom I did not think could fit into this role. With his last film being Gladiator where he was buffed, here, he is slouched over and fits into an awkward body and mind. A solid supporting cast gives this movie depth. I won't give away too much because there are a few surprises and no shortage of touching moments. A Beautiful Mind is flawed in that it simplifies Nash's achievements into elementary terms. I saw the extra with Ron Howard visiting Nash and it seemed he had no idea what Nash's equilibrium accomplished or stood for. Ron Howard, however, proves to be a fine emotional director and relies heavily on Russell Crowe's great performance.

Summary: Russel Crowe's finest hour!?
Review: Whethor Russel Crowe is an idiot in person, or not has no bearing on his acting abilities, and they are quite superb. All of the acting in this movie are done very tastefully and believably. The story is incomplete, because it is based on a true story, but it does not seem like that if you watch it unknowingly.
The story concentrates on the life of John Nash, a genius, who suffers from schizophrenia, and how he overcomes his hallucinations. It is truly inspirational.

Summary: Rent don't buy
Review: This was a really enjoyable movie, but at some points lacking in depth. I bought it hoping to get more out of it by multiple viewings as well as the extra material. Boy was that a mistake. The mathematics was never really explained, just shown to us by drawings. I finally bought a copy of a book on the Game Theory in Politics to understand his groundbreaking work. A great movie, it just does not have repeat quality like Gandhi or JFK. Once you see it, you see it. As a French minor, I may end up playing the French dubbed version simply to feel like I got my money's worth. Never a good sign. The stuff on the second disk was basically a waste of time to me. I'm not interested in how they made a heavy drama like this. Sure, in animation and action movies these can be interesting, but movies like this do not lend themselves to these featurettes. Still, all in all great performances by all. I recommend highly you see this movie, just don't buy it.

Summary: Just enjoy it for what it is
Review: Oscar winner Ron Howard (He'll always be Opie Taylor and Ritchie Cunningham to me!) successfully navigates a film with subject matters (math, economics and mental illness) that could and probably did discourage people from seeing this gem. Their loss. Think what you will about his personal conduct but Russell Crowe proves that he's a splendid actor in his role as John Nash. Crowe took what could have been an unlikable character and made you care for him. Jennifer Connoly was impressive in her role of Mrs. Nash although I wish the movie had examined her struggles with her husband in more detail. The real Alicia Nash and her sacrifices were given short shift in the film. There was a lot of controversy about the factual accuracy of this movie and the detractors have valid points. However, movies have often veered away from the "true" story for dramatic purposes so if you want a more detailed (and frankly more fascinating account of the Nashes) read the book upon which this movie was based. In the meantime, if you can ignore the factual omissions, sit back and enjoy the storytelling in this film.
