Rating: Summary: Great performances, not much of a story Review: After looking at several other reviews, I'll be the counter- point. First of all, no question that Crowe did an excellent job. However, maybe because my education is all in mathematics, I was looking for something more ... including a better, more accurate, characterization of the mathematical setting Nash found himself in. Didn't happen.I don't believe the film was intended to be a documentary - Howard could have done much better at that. It evidently wasn't a biography either. What then was it? A story about mathematics and/or a mathematician? A study in mental disorders? If it was intended to be either, it fell short. On the one hand the "person in the street" could not get much of a feel for Nash and his contribution to mathematics from this film ... an important and significant omission. On the other, nothing really was said regarding the events leading up to THE high point of his career - achieving the Nobel Prize. Ya just can't leave this kind of stuff out in a flick like this!! Moreover, there is no Nobel in mathematics and that is a significant point in this case. If this was a study in mental disorder all I can say is it was way too shallow. Glad I saw it, wouldn't see it again.
Rating: Summary: Best movie of all time Review: I definitely classify this movie as the best of all time. It is original and amazing. The cast was superb, especially Ed Harris and Jennifer Connelly. Of course, Russell Crowe was undeniably perfect, but that is expected. This film captured my attention and imagination immediately. Although the beginning starts out a little slow, it catches up and is perfectly planned. As soon as the middle gets a bit confusing, the whole concept comes together and entrances you. This movie is simply the best I've ever seen. Since seeing it (four times) no movie thrills me. It spoils you into thinking no other film is even satisfactory. That's okay with me. I'll just go home and watch "A Beautiful Mind," again.
Rating: Summary: Don't listen to the HYPE, that's all it is. Review: Although this was a fairly decent film, and Russell Crowe's preformance surpasses all before, it's certianly not the best movie ever made, let alone the best of the year. It's quite long and slow, and it moves along at the pace of a very large turtle. Again it was decent although I got bored after the first couple hours and shut it off, it really wasn't Oscar worthy. On a side note, if you do want this movie, I would suggest going with the widescreen version, who want's full screen? You lose thirty percent on the sides this way.
Rating: Summary: Don't listen to the HYPE, that's all it is. Review: Although the story to the movie is good, this movie is very long and tedious to sit through. It moves at the pace of a giant turtle and at times becomes very hard to follow what's going on! Russell Crowe delivers a brilliant preformance there is absolutely no doubt about that, but to watch this film you have to have a lot of time on your hands and a really really good attention span. I got bored and shut it off after the second hour. Please don't listen to all the mass hype because that's really all it is, especially the raves after it got the oscar, this is a decent movie but it's certianly not the best ever made, let alone best of the year.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Movie Review: There is no words to express what I thought when I saw this film. It was filled with talented actors and actresses, a beautifully written script, and excellent visuals. Russell Crowe is not usually an actor that I can stand but this movie really showcases his talent. Playing such an interesting person as John Nash was a very hard task but he pulls it off beautifully. His acting seems believable while his body language shows that he researched the life of John Nash. A Beautiful Mind IS Oscar calibur and beats Monsters Ball in the race for best picture. Monsters Ball did have some stellar performances but A Beautiful Mind had everything a good movie needs. Next time you are at your local rental store pick up A Beautiful Mind and give it a chance, you will not be sorry.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Story Review: Ron Howard does an excellent job of "telling" a story about a brilliant man who suffers mental illness. Ron Howard delivers a story. I really enjoyed the film. I believe Russell deserved the Academy Award. Sorry Denzel, I think Russell truly did a fine acting job (can't disagree with the selection of Halle Berry). I felt for John Nash and at times wanted to believe that his delusions were real rather than in his mind. One of the best films of the year.
Rating: Summary: A terrific DVD of a deeply overpraised film. Review: A very silly film. Russell Crowe appears to be channeling Dustin Hoffman in Rainman. Jennifer Connelly is possibly the most beautiful actress on the face of the earth. The real star of this overblown biopic-by-numbers is the stunning cinematography of Roger Deakins. I also quite liked James Horner's score. The film spends 2 hours telling us that Nash is a nut and then in it's final 20 minutes shifts gears and asks us to believe he is a genius. Connelly deserves better. This critically lauded script made me blush. How long does it take to write lines this cringe-inducing? Why doesn't it say "loosely based on a true story" before the opening scene? This quite handsome 2 disc DVD is stuffed with additional items. Alas I expected deleted scenes showing us Nash the anti-Semitic closet case. No such luck as this is Hollywood. How sad that some believe this to be the best film of 2001. And if I didn't say this before, Jennifer Connelly derserves better.
Rating: Summary: Good, but overrated Review: Great acting by Crowe & Connelly. And thanks to the extremely talented Ron Howard, this otherwise "dry" story comes to life & keeps you interested. This movie is definitely worth seeing, and possibly even worth owning. However, while it was worthy of some of the awards it was granted, it lacks the creativity that ought to be required for "Best Picture" accolades, in my opinion. But "Human Interest" stories always pull on the heart-strings, and this one did it well...well enough to get the necessary votes from the Academy. In short, in 10-15 years, I do not believe this will be thought of as a "classic".
Rating: Summary: Great film overall. Review: Russell Crowe has hit another homerun with this film of the genius John Nash's life. Seems anything Ron Howard touches these days turns to gold and this film is no exception. John Nash, although a genius, is a tortured soul who is forced to learn to live with his demons or lose the very life he has come to love. This film drags a bit in the middle, but do not be discouraged. It will pick back up, perhaps when you least expect it to. Jennifer Connelly and Ed Harris do a fantastic job as supporting actors. And the story, based on the true life of John Nash, is a great film but is not reccommended for those with the attention span of the average MTV viewer. Its an intricate story that needs your full attention to fully appreciate it.
Rating: Summary: SOON-TO-BE CLASSIC! Review: This movie, equipped with the movie industry's best, steals the hearts and minds of all who watch. Russell Crowe captivates the audience as he portrays the brilliant Dr. John Nash. He brings to life the essence of Nash's character, making it seem almost realistic, bringing the audience to believe he really is the famous Nobel winner. Lest we forget the Oscar-winning performance by Jennifer Connelly, who portrays Alicia Nash, John Nash's wife and number one supporter. Also receiving recognition is the director, who has come a long way since his years as Opie on the Andy Griffith Show. Ron Howard truly bested himself with this wonderful film. I encourage all to see this movie about a truly misunderstood genius.
