Summary: A delightful mix of comedy and drama..
Review: I am very fond of this film. The script is fantastic and the cast just blew me away. Chaos chaos chaos! Donald Sutherland and Stockard Channing play a married couple who meet a young mysterious black man when he shows up to their swanky apartment bleeding claiming to have been mugged. The young black man, played by Will Smith soon after meeting the couple seduces them with his views on the world and such.( I myself was seduced by the whole conversation they shared)
That's when things take an unusual twist. No one is who they seem to be, and everyone is so intoxicated by the mystery of who this young black man is that no one will rest until they find out the truth. Chaos Chaos Chaos!
I was very impressed with the casting. Everyone is this film did a great job conveying the confusion that the characters felt. A great performance by Anthony Michael Hall playing Trent Conway. Even though he is only in the film for about 15 - 20 minutes, his contribution to the story is just astounding.
" It was a rainy night in Boston..he was standing in a doorway.." He was just fantastic! "..you give them a pot of jam.." and.. "..bottle..of..beer.."
This film will definitely be one of your favorites. Chaos chaos chaos!

Summary: Made me stop and think
Review: I happen to see this movie late at night. I was spellbound by the dialogue even though there where numerous 3 minutes commercials throughout the entire show. Most good movies I see lack any meaningful droplets of thoughts and leave you with a adrenaline rush and soon forgotten except for remembering the costumes, the special effects, or the action scenes. This movie is all about dialogue that flows like sweet running water. I certainly did not enjoy the homosexual piece but it is a painting of the complete character that is a true con man. I wonder why this very intelligence con man never struck it rich. Truly his weakness was his destruction. In the end, I am going to rent and maybe later purchase this movie to get the full essence of the performance and the dialogue.

Summary: Will Smith's best debut movie
Review: I has plesantly surprised with this wonderful movie. I have been a Will Smith fan since "Parents just don't understand". I knew he was truly blessed as an entertainer. I happened to see his biography on MTV and they mentioned this movie. I couldn't believe as a fan, I had actually missed this movie. Granted I liked all his other movies as strictly for entertainment purposes except of course, The Legend of Bagger Vance and Ali which establishes him as Serious Actor. However; "Six Degrees of Separation by far is cultivating at the very least and he does an excellent job in his first serious movie role. I must 100% agree with [another reviewer]. Every word is very much my own thoughts and impression about this great movie. All the actors should have walked away with many awards and the movie deserved more media attention. Excellent movie!!!!

Summary: Excellent recreation of thoroughly entertaining play
Review: I recall reading a press report on the Columbine School shootings and the lifestyle of the two protaganists - apparently they were friends who
spent many many undisturbed hours in the basement of one of their parent's home making bombs etc as is the want of modern middle class teenagers. The point of the report was how dissociated or at least unaware the parents were of what their adolescent children were up to.
This wonderful film is about in part spoilt children and the huge gap that exists between them and their parents - or at the least the horror the parents experience when the children mirror their values. There is a wonderful scene when the wealthy Kitteredges (played by the SUPERB Mr Sutherland and Ms Stockard Channing) are abused for giving away their son's pink shirt to a wounded stranger. Or the horror they experience when the children DON'T mirror theirb values. Another scene features a telephone call from a student who tells her parents that she is getting married and going to Afghanistan to help the peasants in revenge against her parents for her highly privileged upbringing.
In this fine film, Paul (Will Smith was BORN to play this role) brings joy to the people her interacts with and actually changes the life of some, especially Mrs Kitteridge. Playing a ... black who is talented but poor, Mr Smith makes being an outsider in a materialistic hypocritical society a glamorous and attractive thing. Good or bad? It is also ravishingly photographed which fits one of its major themes - Western societies obsession with appearances - as well as fitted with excellent soundtrack. A thoroughly ENJOYABLE cinematic experience. After a dozen viewings, my intial impressions have been resoundingly confirmed. Worth owning.

Summary: Not one of Channing's best
Review: I rented this movie because I'm a big Stockard Channing fan, but was very disappointed. The movie, though it has an amusing plot, is very disjointed and often leaves the viewer questioning how it moved to the next part of the plot. This isn't meant to be a very informational review, just a caution that you may not want to spend time on this one, much less money.

Summary: Not quite as good as the play, but well worth watching.
Review: I saw Stockard Channing in John Guare's hit play "Six Degrees of Separation" on London's West End, and she (and of course the play) so blew me away, I couldn't get out of my seat afterwards. I just remember going home with my friend, Maggie, and opening the first bottle of scotch we could find to ease the emotional disarray we were in.

That said, you will not need that bottle of scotch after this film. Even though it doesn't stray too far from the original script, the piece just doesn't work as well on film as it does on stage. But we're not all so lucky as to live in a city that has major theatre productions, or the means to travel to such cities. Hence, thank God for such attempts to film theatre masterpieces (i.e. Richard Burton in "Equus").

Now to the film: perfect cast! Stockard Channing is one of the greatest actresses this generation has had the privilege of experiencing. Her power is stronger live in a theatre, but she is still mesmerizing on screen; Donald Sutherland is the perfect choice for the role of her husband, but the big surprise is Will Smith. Thank God that Denzel Washington couldn't talk him out of doing the role (according to an interview I read with Smith, Washington told him that he would have major career problems if he played the role of this emotionally disturbed homosexual youth - given Smith's career path, I'd say that Washington doesn't have a career as a fortune-teller). It was Washington, however, who convinced him not to do the kiss scene that was in the original play (and originally in the screenplay, too). Kiss or no kiss, Will Smith took a major chance, pulled it off beautifully, proved to the world that he really can act and moves you to the point of tears with his sensitive performance.

This piece is base on a true story of an emotionally disturbed youth claiming to be the son of Sydney Poitier. But if you didn't know that, you'd swear it had to be made up. Sometime reality is truly better than fiction! Put this one on your "must see" list.

This film was so incredibly intense, and captivating-I must have watched it 6 times...Will Smith and Sutherland did very well in their roles, however the true star by far was Stockard Channing! She was very thorough and acted with emotions only SHE could pull off...really, is there anything that woman can not do? A must see-very pyschological...take your time with it!

Summary: Six Degrees of Separation
Review: If you call yourself a Will Smith fan and you haven't seen this movie, SHAME ON YOU! Channing, Smith, and Sutherland offer superb performances in this dramatization of Guare's play. This is NOT an ordinary Will Smith movie and I think fans would be a bit surprised to see the "Fresh Prince" in this role. Regardless, he delivers with both barrels. Between Channing, Smith, and Sutherland the interest of the viewer is kept through the entire near two hour-long video. This is surely a movie for thinkers! A LOT of knowledge is dropped in this movie and requires one to think throughout the movie as opposed to the "big finale"-type movies you usually see these stars in. Although at a couple of points Smith could have made the play more believable if he had done what was written, he gave a dynamic performance regardless. If you didn't enjoy this movie, you must have missed the point. Rewind and try again and be sure to listen to Channing closely! I assure you, once you get the point it's well worth it!
