Rating: Summary: Jake does both Conan Doyle, and daddy proud! Review: Jake follows in father, Lawrence's, footsteps in creating a wonderful script (I am referring to the Lawrence Kasdan of Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Return of the Jedi - not to the Lawrence Kasdan reponsible for the Bodyguard). The characters here are an update, and much lighter, version of Holmes and Watson. When is the last time you saw Bill Pulman play an interesting character? If the answer is never, then do check out this film. It's lighthearted, but intriguing, and leaves plenty of room for sequels. The DVD quality is first-rate, with a few extras thrown in for good measure. Haven't sat through the Kasdan voiceover, but am sure it would be of interest to hear the first-time director talk about making this film.
Rating: Summary: Brilliance in a year of overrated films Review: A skeptical film watcher, I was blown away by this one; Pullman and Stiller become far less unsung in a wonderful variation of Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. The successful modernization of a classic work is even harder to find than classics themselves, but Zero Effect even manages to update the basic structure while maintaining the luster of an unadorned masterpiece. Let me be frank- this almost makes up for Pullman's appearance in ID4... actually, it does. I am of the opinion that the more informed and educated comedy is, the more outragesously funny it is. HBO's Mr. Show is a prime example of this, as is Zero Effect. 3.4 x 10^5 thumbs up... HAHAH!
Rating: Summary: complex, interesting story but a tad too drawn out Review: I found the whole basic story of the film to be quite fascinating, the idea of the drug abusing, yet brilliant recluse gumshoe was great, Ben Stiller was a good straight man through the entire film it was not until the end with the whole intimacy between bill pullman and the girl that I lost interest in the story. All together though I would still say I would recomend it
Rating: Summary: Very good. Funny! Please see it. Review: Zero is one of the funniest and eccentric characters ever. You'll be guessing through the whole movie and be very satistifed at the end. "That's W2. WW2 is the second world war."
Rating: Summary: fantastic muted-humor dialogue (See Grosse Point Blank) Review: ABSOLUTELY GREAT one of the top films of the yea
Rating: Summary: Starts well but... Review: The first half hour was promising but after that it just drags on and on. I don't care at all about these people. I'm amazed S&E gave it two thumbs up. Mind numbingly boring...struggled to stay awake...
Rating: Summary: Some more Zero sequels please Review: A few minutes into the movie, and I was hooked. Ben Stiller was very good alternating between a straight-faced and exasperated associate of Daryl Zero. As Zero, Bill Pullman had perhaps his best role. This movie is definitely worth more than one viewing. And I want sequels! The DVD edition is inexpensive, and has most of the goodies that come with the format.
Rating: Summary: Funny, itelligent, no Really! this one is. Kasdan gets it. Review: That movie contains the most dynamic scrabble shot ever filmed. The score by the Greyboy Allstars rumbles. The spookey high-tech Sherlock Holmes is a classic genius, distant from the wirld in his flashes of objectivity; but we are not seeing the old stereotype here, rather we see this man's uniquness as just what makes him so real. This movie succeeds without any of the cheap manipulative timpany and thunder that actually signifies nothing in so many other movies, as many of the classics did, such as "Lost Weekend", on the strength of the writing, the acting and the exquisite harmony of form and content. If this movie doesn't become a modern classic then I have too much respect upon the world.
Rating: Summary: Intriguing, if familiar, mystery Review: Pullman and Stiller are excellent in this modern day remake of the Sherlock Holmes story "A Scandal in Bohemia". Plot twists keep you guessing, and Kasdan doesn't let us down with contrivances or cliches. Offbeat and and occasionally strange, highly entertaining and well worth seeing; with Pullman putting in an astonishingly good performance as a present day American Holmes.
Rating: Summary: An Awesome Movie Review: I think that "Zero Effect" is one of the funniest movies of the year. Bill Pullman is teriffic as the reclusive and brilliant Daryl Zero. Stiller is great as Zero's, overstressed and under appreciated employee. It is really well done. Kasden is one of the best new directors on his first features. I said it once and I'll say it again it is an awesome movie. END
