Summary: bad
Review: i've seen worse movies, but not many. shocking is its awfulness and frightening in its mere existence, i would rather sit through the weekend at bernies trilogy than watch this movie again. by purchaing this movie you preclude yourself from ever being accepted in intelligent society. if you "liked the honey, i shrunk the (insert something that would be kooky in a shrunken state)" trilogy then you will love this movie.

Summary: A semi-entertaining remake of NECESSARY ROUGHNESS
Review: The impression I got from this movie was that they took the basic premise of NECESSARY ROUGHNESS (replace the regular athletes with a group of semi-talented ones and mix in a big dose of humor) and added a little melodrama to it. The problem I had was that it couldn't seem to make up its mind if it wanted to be a drama with a little bit of comic relief or a comedy with a dramatic theme. Neither the drama nor the comedy were focused on and that gave a certain weakness to the film. It made me unable to take some of Hackman's more passionate speeches seriously. If they were going to do a dramatic film, they should not have even touched the strippers turned cheerleaders. If they were doing a comedy, there should have been more scenes with them. Things of this nature, where they took an idea and tried to do it both comedically and dramatically, were what made me give the movie only three stars rather than four. If the filmmakers could have made up their mind which way they wanted to go, then this film would have been more solid as a whole.

There were two individual aspects of the film that bugged me. First, Keanu's character's romance with the cheerleader was focused on a little too much. It just seemed out of place. Second, I would have liked a little more closure at the end...what happened to these characters afterward?

As it is, the dramatic scenes are really well done and the comedic scenes are funny without going too much over the top. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed watching this movie. I just think it could have been done a little differently and that would have made a world of difference. If you're looking for a funny football movie, check out NECESSARY ROUGHNESS. If you want a dramatic one, go watch either ANY GIVEN SUNDAY or THE PROGRAM.

Summary: Provides good laughs
Review: Keanu Reeves got $12 million to do this lightweight sports comedy about a group of replacement football players, all from different sides of the track, to fill in for the malicious and greedy players for a team. Loosely based on a football strike from 1987, The Replacements is a lightweight comedy that provides the laughs. It manages to blend the humor pretty well into a sports movie about playing football with heart. The film would not be good if it weren't rounded out by such a good cast. The always dependable Gene Hackman becomes the good guy/mentor to Reeves' quarterback. Orlando Jones, Rhys Ifans, and Jon Favreau and the rest of the team provide comic relief as the out there players. A problem I have with the movie is the abrupt ending but aside from that, "The Replacements" is a satisfying rental.

Summary: TOUCHDOWN!
Review: I'm writing from Australia, where knowledge of American football is scarce,to say the least. I really enjoyed this movie because it does what it sets out to do- give you a good laugh and food for thought (as well as making you feel good). Keanu is comfortable as the down-to-earth Shane Falco, a guy you can relate to, and his chemistry with Hackman really makes the film watchable. Yes,you've seen football movies before, but this film understands itself very well, is VERY FUNNY and has alot of heart.

Summary: Necessary Roughness...I mean The Replacements.
Review: Does anybody remember a movie about 8 years ago called Necessary Roughness? It had Scott Bakula in it. Evidently the producers of this movie didn't cause they made the same movie again. I'm not kidding. It is a blatant rip-off of that movie. It's about a bunch of replacement players for a football team. That is what Necessary Roughness was about, and it follows the same sports movie outline so I'm not going into what happened and all. That's it.THE GOODIt actually was funny. I laughed alot, but I also laughed alot in Necessary Roughness.THE BADPredictable. Need I say more.THE BOTTOM LINEHey let's make a sports movie, that isn't so doggone predictable, or is that not possible. The Fan was a good unpredictable sports movie. But it was pretty dark. This one gets a B- At least it was funny.

Summary: It's a feel good movie
Review: Wonderful and easy to watch. Loved every minute of it. Keanu was at his best with his usual stoic style and lots of "Heart". Gene Hackman was superb as the caring coach. Enjoyed it tremendously. Good clean fun.

Summary: Second Chances Have Never Been Funnier
Review: "The Replacements," a story about scab football players, was absolutely hilarious, thanks to the talent of my man, Keanu Reeves, as well as an excellent supporting cast of lunatics, from a chain smoking Welsh tavern owner to a crazy SWAT team cop. The film shows that even the craziest of charcaters who are down on their luck can work as a team and have their moment of glory. This is a formula film, no doubt, but the football scenes had me on the edge of my seat, and the rest of the time I was trying to keep from falling out of my seat because I was laughing so hard. Also, since I saw this film, I can't listen to Gloria Gaynor's classic "I Will Survive" without chuckling. It's a must-see if you need a pick-me-up.

Summary: Once you have touched greatness....
Review: As shocking as it may be, when you think about it, the football movies of the past, to include Oliver Stone's excellent but dark, "On Any Given Sunday" simply do not match this film. I will even place this film in the all-time greats like "Pride of the Yankees" and "The Natural".

First, we don't need to watch any more tragedies on film, we need to see something that inspires us to overcome, and this film delivers: I'm surprised its considered a comedy! Hackman should get an oscar for this film because his narration and actions drive the film and create yet another complex character from the mind of the master. Hackman's Coach knows that the men he wants to be his replacements are great, he is frustrated that life hasn't shown them that and he wants to set them up for success, not failure. He believes in them as human beings, not just as football players, that if they can get a "second chance" they will shine. His talks with Keanu Reeves' charachter, reveal a candor and leadership style you should really consider. He tells him flat out he wants to see the man and the ability come together because it will be wonderful to see or words to that effect, his belief in the REALITY that Reeves can deliver are stupendous. Later he instructs his Quarterback, in the hour of decision, the leader wants the ball in his hands.

Along the way, Reeves meets a sexy head cheerleader and there is a nice romance where she begins to believe in him, too. The football action scenes are the best yet to grace movie screens, you feel like you are in shoulder pads/helmet again. What I like was how just before the final game that would decide whether they go to the play-offs or not, Reeves gets canned by front-office politics in favor of the arrogant Joe Theismann-type "all pro" quarterback who is afraid he will lose his job. You are not really sure how the film will end at this point, the team follows the leadership of Reeves but are losing under the arrogant vet. The coach gets a phone call.

I will not give away the ending but Hackman's voice over after the game, clinches it, I paraphrase: "All men once they have touched greatness in their lives are changed forever".

AND THIS IS THE POINT!

Just once, do something great in your life! Go all out and let yourself know that you can do it, once you know this you will be changed forever. The world doesn't let you or want you to know that greatness is within your grasp, this is why it beats you down. Find your gift you have been given and act on it, this is the true attitude "replacement" we need and this film shows us how to get it.

Summary: Football
Review: A rough-and-fumble football comedy! Underdogs get a shot at being top dogs when a motley array of blue-collar misfits fills in for striking pro-football millionaires.

Summary: Not bad for a football movie
Review: The Replacements was an action-packed good old fashioned football movie. I enjoyed the saga between the replacements and the pro's. This was a far better flick than "Any Given Sunday" in my opinion. Keanu Reeves shows why he is one of Hollywood's finest.
