Summary: A good movie about hope and courage
Review: An excellent role for carrey as he proves he can do any genre that comes his way. A great true american movie that touched us all and will make you cry on occasions and laugh. This is what our country needs. A great romantic drama the whole family will love to watch. Great cast and directing makes this movie one of carrey's best. 10/10

Summary: Great movie!
Review: This movie is my favorite Jim Carrey movie and it isn't even a comedy. It potrays a great message about our freedoms and our rights as American citizens. This movie is wonderfully cast, and just because it has political overtones doesn't make it any less of a movie. Wonderful acting. Best movie I saw in 2001.

Summary: An average and VERY predictable movie
Review: Jim Carrey's got two careers. The comedian and the actor.
Without him, how funny would Mask,Dumb and dumber or Ace Ventura have been ? Still playing funny roles, but maybe less in the absurd, (Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty) he finally showed us how he can excel as a serious character. Man on the moon is in my opinion the best film of his career. The Truman show was also a good performance and I knew that by watching The Majestic, I would again meet the serious Jim Carrey, not the funny.I was expecting a great act but unfortunately the story didn't make it. Very predictable and an END ssssoooooo boring, and moreso so impossible(like the court scene). I am disappointed. I wonder if this role was a piece of cake for Jim and I ask myself why he chose to play in such a "No storyline" movie.
A mix of Doc Hollywood and for the French cinema fans "Boudu sauve des eaux" , between CLICHES and predictable characters, dialogues and even scenes, you will ask why this flick lasts so long to explain so little a story. The only thing that makes this movie interesting enough is the paranoia and the inquisition regarding Communism that USA practiced over the public individuals, actors, writers and intellectual during this period.

Summary: the stepford town.....
Review: this film, about people who love movies, just may cause you to develop a blind hatred of movies...

a genuinely sweet attempt to recapture the Capra-esque spirit is buried somewhere within the glacial expanse of this film, which feels like an all-encompassing bit of fakery...especially in the whole HUAC hearings sub-plot, where the film seems to veer wildly away from realism, toward a desire to tug the audience's heartstrings and reward sentiment......it might not be so creepy if it didn't trivialize the actual McCarthy witchhunts, or if you hadn't seen the truman show. (to those who have, try watching these two movies back to back...there seem to be some eerie parallels..)

two bright spots are the Sand Pirates of the Sahara, and Martin Landeau's performance.....his are the only emotions that seem to cut through the stifling atmosphere and ring true-sentimental without being eerily saccarine....

Summary: Has Classic Potential, Carry does well in non-comedic role!
Review: I never even heard of this movie until I stumbled on it here on Amazon. I read all the reviews and saw that the used price was reasonable and I made the purchase. I am glad I did. I loved this movie. It is a feel good, cry twice (but don't tell anybody) kind of movie (one from sadness, the other happy). I think Jim Carrey did a super job acting (with no corny jokes) in this serious role. If you are looking for comedy, this is probably not the Jim Carrey DVD to purchase, but if you are looking for some good afternoon entertainment, this is it. The movie starts off a little slow, and I thought it was a bit long, but the story was great. I believe it could of been a masterpiece had it been shorter and edited under 2 hrs. Overall, it is worth seeing.

Summary: Never mind that it wasn't a blockbuster...
Review: ...I liked this movie, and I confess it made me cry several times. It was sweet, simple, and sex-free for a change. I could feel the joy of Martin Landau when he faces "Luke" for the first time - what parent wouldn't be when their only child has been gone for nine years? One son comes back alive when all the others came back in boxes or with parts missing, as was the case of Leo with his right "hook". I could also feel the frustration towards the Communist witch-hunters during that time. The Majestic is a good movie, just not a great one.

Summary: Stand up for the constitution!!!
Review: I was captivated by this movie. It was good to see Jim Carrey in a non-comedic role. He does a really good job of this character. It was a good reminder of the values upon which the USA was founded and that we need to be working to protect those rights. I would recommend it!

Summary: Am I the only one who liked this movie?
Review: I was just watching a show on the Entertainment channel called "101 Biggest Celebrity Oops!," where they listed 101 different things that celebrities did that were bad choices, slip-ups, etc. etc. Jim Carrey doing this movie was one of them. Several of my friends have also said they couldn't stand this movie. Am I the only one who liked it??

I guess it may be hard for some people to disassociate Jim Carrey from movies like "The Mask" and "Batman Forever", where he played some pretty goofy (some might say 'obnoxious') roles, but to say that his role in this movie wasn't well acted out and "painful to watch?" I think the people that talk down about this movie were just disappointed that they didn't get the usual "goofy" Jim Carrey they were expecting.

This was a good movie all around--good acting, good set, and a good storyline. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Summary: Great Film.
Review: Of all the slapstick comedies that Jim Carry has done, the best film he has done in my opinion is a drama about family, courage, and honor. The Majestic was over looked in the theater, and that is a real shame because not too many movies deal with the kind of courage that it deals with broadly in this film. Jim Carrey really Shows great dramatic chops, Martin Landau is great as always, and should have gotten an Oscar nomination for his role, and Laurie Holden gives a great performance and holds her own with the boys.

See it.

Summary: Wonderful and touching
Review:

Jim Carrey takes a serious turn in The Majestic. An accident leaves Pete, a Hollywood screenwriter (who is also on the verge of being blacklisted as a Communist), with amnesia and he is welcomed by a small town whose residents believe he is one of their sons come back from the war, Luke. He and his father reopen the town's movie theater, which is a metaphor for bringing the entire town back to life. After months in the town, his own B-movie playing in the theater jogs his memory and forces him to admit to the town that he is not who they think, the same day his beloved father is buried. Pete returns to Hollywood to face the Communist accusations and stands up to the committee in a way Luke would have. The ending brought tears to my eyes and I immediately wanted to watch this movie again. It is a really sweet film and a welcome change.
