Summary: The best musical ever made!
Review: Moulin Rouge is surely the best musical of all times. It's contemporary, bright and magical, telling the love story of Satine and Christian. Baz Luhrmann was very competent bringing "Moulin Rouge" (the third film of the "Red Curtain" trilogy) to life and did it like no other director could do. It's wonderful the idea of creating a musical with pop songs of the last decades, instead of original songs, not known by the public. "Come what may", the original love score of this movie, is a great track as well, since it captures all the pain characters go through.The double DVD edition is exactly as I expected when I first watched this movie. It brings all the possible information related to the movie, with high quality and advanced technology. It has director's comments, rehearsal of the can can dance with the cast, interviews with the cast, videos of lady marmalade, etc. The DVD box is awesome, just like the movie. I'm sure Moulin Rouge is a DVD which will please all types of viewers.

Summary: Some may, Some may not... I do like it!
Review: I think this movie is a great movie. The first time I watched this movie, I turned it off after the first 15 minutes being quite confused. I tried watching the movie again and after I knew what was going on, it became a great movie. I think the key to actually liking this movie is to relate to it. I am in a chorus and love singing which is probably why I loved this movie. When I heard Ewan McGregor sing I was in awe. It was great. Then Nicole Kidman....wow! I would buy the soundtrack alone for 20+ dollars! Th plot can get a little "cheesy" somtimes but it still kept me entertained the whole time. I love this movie. If you're thinking about buying this movie, I suggest you go and rent it before you by it. As you can see in all of the reviews, it's either a hate it or love it movie. Also, this DVD has an extra disc dedicated to extras (easily 3+ hours)! Overall, I think ths movie is great with great exceptional singing by the two main stars; Ewan Mcregor and Nicole Kidman.

Summary: This Movie Stinks!
Review: To my mind, the musical is the best dramatic form for telling a story. By using song and dance to express emotion, humor, drama, love, hate, and so much more, a good musical can leave the viewer spellbound. "Oklahoma!" is such a musical. "My Fair Lady" is such a musical. "Moulin Rouge," is not. There are so many things wrong with this film, but first and foremost is, it's impossible to really care about any of the characters. No one here is very likeable, except Ewan MacGregor's character, but he's nothing more than the young songwriting genius who could have very easily been played by Dick Powell in a 1930's Busby Berkeley film. That's the other weakness to this film. What it all boils down to, is this is a simple love triangle. And it's very clear from the beginning of the film how it's all going to play out. So, if that's the case, the viewer must be taken for a memorable ride for the film to work. "Moulin Rouge" tries, but ultimately tires the viewer instead. Each production number is done with a type of "in-your-face" direction that it alienates more than anything else. You do have to give the film credit for using modern, rock music to provide the bulk of the film's score (though most of the original songs sound like the same "showtunes" that have haunted Broadway for thirty years now.) The attempt to use this type of music is groundbreaking, and there are only a handful of scenes where it works, mostly the one anchored by "Your Song." But the film tries so hard to impress you, that it forgets to entertain you. Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein understood how to incorporate popular music of the day to take your breath away in the telling of a drama (And win Pullitzer prices in the process.) Sadly, no one connected with this film understands what makes entertainment work. The musical could thrive once again if done properly; unfortunately, too many people may see this (or the sugar-coated "The Sound of Music") and think this is what the musical is all about. It's films like this that give a great dramatic form a bad rap. Watch "Oklahoma!" or "The Music Man." Those are musicals that work through and through.

Summary: The Ultimate Musical
Review: How could this film be any better? The moment when Ewan Macgregor first sings a line to Nicole Kidman and her eyes light up I was hooked. The story, though familiar to those who know Shakespeare in Love, is still amazing and spectacular in its beautiful simplicity. The impoverished writer who falls for the gorgeous girl out of his reach only to discover that not is all as it seems....but never fear, in grand old school style Love conuers all and the movie itself is a testament to the enduring quality of "silly love songs." Listen, watch and learn to love this masterpiece.

Summary: One of the best movies I've ever seen!
Review: Moulin Rouge is an incredible movie that many people did not give a chance. It is a beautiful love story and musical, and Nicole Kidman (Satine) and Ewan McGregor (Christian) not only act but sing, really showing how talented they are. Through a course of mistaken identities, Satine, the Moulin Rouge's hot commodity, and Christian, a poor and naive writer, meet and eventually fall in love. Neither of them know that Satine has TB and is slowly dying. Satine's affections are also being "bought" by the man who is funding her first big show, which is her chance to get out of the Moulin Rouge. He doesn't know about Christian and when he finds out about him is ruthless in trying to get rid of him. It IS fast paced, but if you keep up through some of the beginning turbulence, the story really draws you in. I laughed and cried! It was a real movie experiance. It might not be for everyone, but you never know until you try. I'm 14, and I loved it! You have to see this movie!

Summary: Half full, half empty
Review: In his commentaries, Baz Luhrmann is at great pains to justify every trick, gimmick and extravagance in terms of its service to The Story. It's a pity then, that in this regard, what seems to have escaped his attention is the script itself. The slender plot could well have done with some of the savage editing applied so ruthlessly to the dance routines, and would have been better served by a running time closer to 80 minutes. He also goofs by opening with the ending. He has a justification for this too, but it doesn't explain away the fact that it makes the story struggle to engage the audience who then see the simple mechanics of the plot laid bare. If you're going to take away with one hand the audience's anticipation of the ending, you have to offer them something interesting in return with the other, and he simply doesn't. What he does offer us is a visual feast. From the conductor standing in front of the Fox logo at the beginning, Moulin Rouge remains one of the most inventive and beautiful films ever made. It's impossible to take it all in at one sitting, and while some of his visual conceits work better than others, the sheer quantity of imaginative touches is breathtaking. This results in some real highs: the danceadelic introduction of the Moulin Rouge itself provides an astonishing adrenaline rush, and the rooftop 'Your Song' really flies with old-style musical romance. But elsewhere, and at the crucial points, it all kind of gets in the way. We are constantly reminded-- and frequently for no very good reason-- that we are watching a film (see the gun clanking against the miniature Eiffel Tower). Ultimately, the film's cleverness, anachronisms, self-consciousness and eagerness to please have a distancing effect, holding the audience at arm's length outside the story while desperately trying to draw it in for its sentimental coda. Moulin Rouge is half the experience it should have been, but the half that works is more than worth the asking price.

Summary: An amazing movie
Review: When I saw Moulin Rouge in the theater I loved it. I thougt it was really neat how they added all of the modern music to a story that took place 100 years ago. Ewen and Nicole's voices are absolutely wonderful. It made the movie so much more exciting to know that it was their actual voices. I watch my DVD whenever i get the chance. I also own the first soundtrack and I plan I buying the second one. The music is just wonderful. I'm a big fan of musicals and always wished that someone would put one out in the theater like in the old days. I would highly recommend this movie to any theater buff or music lover. It is a great display of "freedom, beauty, truth and love."

Summary: Moulin Rouge: loved it
Review: It is my opinion that with a cutting edge film like Moulin Rouge, the public has a love it or hate it relationship with the movie. I'm with the first group. Here's why: 1) The weird contrasts of it all: a story about love but also about hate, a movie that is dark but also colorful (the first fifteen minutes or so are somewhat overwhelming), music, dance, and costume that 18th century Parisians make modern. Baz Luhrmann puts into this film a very definite but at the same time indescribable environment that I really admired.
2) The actors: Without a doubt, the casting of Moulin Rouge was excellent. In filming a beautiful love story, Luhrmann makes use of song. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor take to this task earnestly in Moulin Rouge, portraying great songs with great voices. John Leguizamo is a freakishly interesting choice for Toulouse-Latrec. "Freakishly," I guess because of his whimsical portrayal of the 18th century Bohemian lifestyle. Jim Broadbent is larger than life in his role as the ringleader of the Moulin Rouge.
3) The DVD features: As you can see from the Amazon.com blurb, there's so much stuff on this DVD that they needed two discs. The stuff is cool: features on the production, dance, music, costume, and set aspects of the movie are included. Aside from these, there are several Easter eggs crammed inside, which are always fun little treats. For some inexplicable reason, I think it's too much stuff (some of it needless) and so slashed a star from my rating. Otherwise, it's entertaining and pretty informative. I recommend this coloful fanciful movie to dance lovers and music lovers (who aren't bent on listening to the original versions of every song). Also recommended to hopeless romantics, fans of Baz Luhrmann, and anyone who believes in the Bohemian ideals of "truth, beauty, freedom, and above all things, love."

Summary: Come on -- be wild and crazy :)
Review: ...My daughter (16) loves it. I tolerated it in the name of being a good Dad :) When all is said and done, it is a nice love story -- gotta love those. It does have great music throughout. Nicole Kidman (always easy on the eyes :) and Ewen McGregor did an excellent job in this. For the Amazon crowd over 35 (like me) -- when folks say this movie is fragmented and frenzied, think of the movie Tommy (Rock Opera). So, if you make it through to the end, I think you'll be left with a good feeling. I made it and ultimately look back on it fondly (but will live a fine life if I never see it again). My daughter has seen it 10 times and will probably wear out the tape.

Review: If there has ever been a film undeserving of the accolades it's received, it's Moulin Rouge. From beginning to end, there's not a trace of true soul or emotion. The acting is uniformly over-the-top, the script is arid, the musical numbers are occasionally fun,...and the only thing that sticks in the memory afterward are the sets...
