Summary: Not opera, operetta
Review: Or, A feast for the senseless.

I read the headlines of a few newspaper reviews and they kept using 'operatic' to describes this silly film. But if you've been to an opera, you'd know that they are finer, more original works. So I'd suggest describing this flick as operettic: light, silly, and pretty chatty for a musical.

As for it being excessive, I thought it was pretty tame. There were no big production numbers, just quick editing to give the effect of substance. Look at a Busby Berkley flick and compare the excess.

Still don't get why Toulouse Lautrec was played like a giddy bozo. He was a well-borne and educated artist. He enjoyed a good time and putting on funny clothes for the cameras, but nothing this silly.

One bonus: more garterbelts than Fredricks of Hollywood :)

Summary: Absolute Perfection.
Review: If I could give this DVD 100 stars, I would. After seeing "Moulin Rouge" sixteen times in the theater, I was anxiously awaiting the DVD. The wait paid off. Not only is the picture quality incredible, but the special features are amazing. There's outtakes, documentaries, photo galleries...enough to make "Moulin Rouge" a hobby rather than just a movie. After watching this, I have a new respect and admiration for director Baz Luhrmann, and for all filmmakers in general. I'd recommend this DVD to any fan of the film, and also to aspiring filmmakers. "Moulin Rouge" reminds us what movies are all about.

Summary: Worth every penny!
Review: Never have I been this excited about purchasing a DVD. I literally bolted home to watch all the 'bonus'on this DVD release and it sure was worth every penny. Not only do you get an amazing movie with out of this world audio transfer, especially if you have surround speakers, the extras in the DVD release is so much fun. You get The Making of, music videos, interviews with the stars, director, designers, extended scenes and so much more. I saw this movie twice in the movie theatres and am glad that I can finally take the experience home with me. This is not just a movie, watching Moulin Rouge was an experience I shall cherish and never forget.

Summary: The best film of 2001!
Review: My favorite film of 2001 is now available on one of the best DVDs ever! Baz Luhrmann's musical masterpiece is witty, funny, and an ingenious blend of decades of popular music with a century-old setting.
Luhrmann's "Red Velvet Curtain" style of directing (see also: Strictly Ballroom and William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet) fits this film perfectly. It's a combination of dazzling visuals photographed with sweeping perfection and a soundtrack that everyone can recognize, but with the new versions, can not necessarily place. I could go on and on about the movie, but this is a DVD review, isn't it?
The sound and picture on this disc are the best I've ever seen for a non-CGI film. There are absolutely NO problems with the picture. NONE. The disc is loaded with features, too. You could spend hours looking through the alternate cuts of scenes and dance sequences and interviews and featurettes. This is quite possibly one of the best DVD treatments ever for a film that definately deserves it.
Actually, I'm not sure if ANY movie deserves a DVD treatment this good. That's how amazing this disc is.

Summary: Pure Genuis. Pure Entertainment.
Review: Moulin Rouge has got to be the best movie of 2001. I sat down, when I was sleepy, to watch it, not expecting to finish it before I fell asleep, but I never even yawned. Moulin Rouge was one of the most spectacular ("Spectacular Spectacular"...lol) movies I've ever seen. I had to get use to the quick changing of scenes and such, because it's a fast paced movie, but that's what made it good. The music was awesome, and in a way, I feel the soundtrack cheated us out on some of the songs. The soundtrack is still pretty awesome anyway. Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor and all of the other cast could sing, dance, and wonderfully entertain. Nicole Kidman surprised me majorly. She's wonderful. This and The Others has made her one of my favorite actresses. Words can't describe her performance here. It was unbelievable. Ewan McGregor was also very good. I haven't seen many movies with him in it, but this showed he has very extraordinary talent. John Leguizamo, as always, was hilarious. And to be honest with you, I'd never cried and laughed so much at a movie. When a character would feel anger, I would feel it. The actors did a superb job. Baz Luhrman is pure genius!

The DVD, like it says on the box, is a groundbreaking and breathtaking experience. The menus are great and go right along with theme of the movie, and are navigated by The Green Fairy. On the first disc, the commentary with Baz Luhrman is there, and a neat special viewing of the movie called Behind the Red Curtian. During the movie, The Green Fairy pops up and we are treated to different entertaining featurettes. The second disc is full of extra features. There are extended dance scenes with the multi-angle viewing option. I found this very interesting and fun. The Cutting Room includes director and producer interviews, deleted or extended scenes, and a "mockery" by Baz Luhrman. all very fun. There's an extensive look at the Marketing of the movie that's very worth the look. There are also sections on the choreography and the music.

The Moulin Rouge 2 disc DVD has got to be the #1 DVD ever produced as of now, and the movie will always live on with me.

Summary: Moulin Rouge
Review: I gave this film 4 stars minus one star for its flaw of not finishing most of the songs in the film. Otherwise, this is a great film. I loved it, the visual effects were great, the story, and the music, was all spectacular. Nicole Kidman was abosolutely beautiful and her voice very similar to Helen Reddy. I think Ewan McGregar was great as well, didn't know he could sing either.

However, my husband thought it was the dumbest movie ever. I'd say rent it first, and if you like then buy it.

Unfortunately it is only available on DVD. They did the same thing with A Knights Tale (another great film). Hollywood dosen't seem to realize not all of us are rich enough to own a DVD player yet.

Thanks.

Summary: Both the Best and Worst
Review: When I initially popped this in, my husband and I both weren't too impressed. While I can appreciate creative and avant garde, the beginning sequences were too frantic and nearly lead me to stop the DVD. If you can hang in and suspend disbelief a bit and allow yourself to be drawn in to the world, the tragic love story of Sabine and Christian is a powerful one.

The music sung by the principals, especially "Come What May", the "Elephant Love Song Medly", and Ewan MacGregor's romantic rendition of "Your Song" is worth the film. The combination of the chemistry of the actors and the power of the music lends itself well to the intense love that these two characters shared.

Some songs, however, took away from the film in my opinion. Madonna's "Like a Virgin" performance was something to cringe through in disbelief. Some songs were expertly chosen - some songs seem to have stuck in because Buhrman was a fan of the artist.

All in all, it's impressive and romantic despite its flaws.

Summary: I usually like "blow 'em up" movies BUT...
Review: My wife was begging to see this movie. I was skeptical because Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor were in it and this is NOT their typical roles. However, the talent that Ewan and Nicole have is well beyond my expectations! Ewan can sing AND act as well as Nicole. A typical actor would not be able to pull off this feat thus showing how powerful the actors/actresses really are. Not only that but the entire cast was really into what they were doing and did a helluva job.

My wife and I laughed out load at most of the movie which indicated to me that this must be a COMEDY. But the emotional rollercoaster ride you go through brought to mind that this is a DRAMA. On top of that, the unfortunate events that the characters must go through was similar to a GREEK-tregedy. It's certainly a MUSICAL, but not entirely. How can you classify this movie? It's a hybrid of all the above.

This movie is truly an original and different than the typical 2 dimentional hollywood drivel. I wish all the cast a JOB WELL DONE! This will be a Cult Classic in the near future and a must own DVD.

Summary: Surprisingly entertaining
Review: I have never been a musical movie fan. The last musical that I saw was "Grease" and that was like centuries ago. But after seeing this film I have to say I really missed out. The thing that was drawing about Moulin Rouge is the fact that the actors of the film are not known for their musical skills, well that's my opinion and my knowledge of the people in the showbiz world amounts to a little more than nil. However after hearing Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman sing bankable songs and music that I'm soooo familiar with, I was just hooked. I guess that's what I liked about it and the story line was so well if I can say "believable" because life can be so tragic. Ok-OK not always.

Well to cut my rambling short - it was touching, and very entertaning. I hope you go and see it or even own a copy to make it part of the archives of great musicals.

To the makers and actors of the film - you did a great job, be proud - Come what may.
