Summary: widescreen version somewhat of a let down
Review: I love this movie and couldn't wait to own the dvd. The special features were pretty cool but I wish a version for the tv screen was available. There are scenes from the trailers, which were formatted for tv, that had parts cut-off from the widescreen version (like the shoes that Sandra was wearing in some of the scenes.) And because this movie has so much to offer visually, the widescreen version made the details harder to see which I found annoying. Also, maybe I'm the only one with this problem, but doesn't the dvd jacket say there are 11 theatrical trailers? I found 4: one under trailers and three under tv spots. Was it a typo or am I missing something. If anyone figures it out please email me and let me know. Needless to say, I'll be buying the video as soon as it comes out.

Summary: Boring movie
Review: I bet if anyone waited a week, they wouldn't even remember what this story was about. I'd enjoy watching the tv sitcoms like Sabrina or Bewitched over this poor excuse for a movie any day.

Summary: I was surprised
Review: Like another viewer, I didn't think I'd enjoy this movie much, but was thoroughly surprised. I tend to like anything Bullock does. She's so wholesome and I know the movie will never turn out trashy. Kidman was too much the dumb sexpot that I really couldn't empathize with her at all, however she was a good foil for Bullock. The scenery was beautiful.

Summary: Great sisters movie!
Review: There are movies and then there are movies. This one won't take any Oscars, but it rates a max 5 stars in entertainment and fun. Kidman and Bullock are terrific as sisters who grow up together as orphans taken in by their spinster aunts who happen to be witches. The girls also have "the power" and soon learn to use it. It's very sweet and for sisters or a father with daughters, it's a must see.

Review: This is a story about a bond between two sisters. One strong enough that they would kill for eachother (literally) - but then bring him back to life, of course. This movie has a dark side, but is more focused on love and relationships. Both Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman did an awesome job! But let this serve as a warning for you women who are attracted to the vampire/cowboy type (especially if you have to knock them out to get any sleep!). It was cool to have new Stevie Nicks' songs on it too since she's concidered a "white witch" by some. Gotta love her! Definitely one worth buying!

Summary: Great movie, disappointing DVD
Review: I'm a real sucker for romances, happy endings, and movies dominated by womens' roles. So I'd give this one 5 stars, except for the bad job of letterboxing.I'm generally a fan of letterboxed movies, but not this time. The DVD provides "widescreen" mode only, but the movie really plays better with the less extreme aspect ratio of a normal TV. I've seen the movie a couple times in TV format on pay-per-view, and I honestly think the director must have composed the scenes for a TV screen. Scenes that looked perfectly natural and reasonably composed in TV format looked cut off and incomplete in the widescreen format. It's as if the widescreen format was a misguided afterthought by some producer. Another oddity: you have to flip the DVD over in order to watch the trailer and TV ads. Too bad they didn't use the other side for the unletterboxed version.

Summary: a modern "women's film"
Review: Back in the 30's they made "women's films", genre films where the leads were all female and the plot centred on "girl stuff." Ditzy as many of them were, they gave actresses a chance to star rather than play "romance interest" for leading men. I'd call this one their direct descendant -- along with "Waiting to Exhale" and "First Wives' Club", etc. Add it to the short list of films in which pagans or witches get a fair shake. That lends it a little interest. I'm finally convinced that Sandra Bullock can act after seeing this one (but my reservations about Kidman are all confirmed). Stockard Channing is worth seeing at any time, in anything. Where I have a problem is with the Kidman character; is it really necessary to the plot for her to be quite so blazingly stupid, or to present such a pouty-little-girl-sexpot? She creates such an over the top bimbo here that it's practically a misogynist caricature -- a throwback to the Sixties. (The attempt to use the Pacific NW as a location for the NE seaboard didn't work for me either, even for one minute, but hey, it's a fantasy flick, right?) Best scene: midnight margaritas. There's some nice ensemble acting going on there, and the mood change is done a lot better than in most other places. This is a mostly-amiable (except as observed above), pretty, amusing little film. Should go over well with teenage girls.

Summary: Good, but it could have been much more with less.
Review: Okay, good flick, enough that I gave it four instead of three stars, though if I had the option, I'd have given it three and a half. In general, a decent story conveyed with workmanlike performances from a decent, attractive cast. But there are problems. Maybe it's the curse of Cruise, but the only thing I've ever absolutely loved Kidman in was Dead Pool. Beyond that, it's been more the people directing her than her own acting ability that have been notable about her performances. As for Bullock, while I haven't seen anything overly remarkable in the films I've seen her in, she does have a screen prescence that grows on you, so much so that you invariably end up rooting for her by the end. The kids and the aunts were great. My biggest problems with the flick were 1) the choppy nature of the overall narrative, 2) the fact that Kidman's role was weakly written and stereotypical and 3), it couldn't make up it's mind if it wanted to be: big and impressive or warm and cuddley. It seemed like there was too much story to cram into too little time. Positives: The supporting cast helped keep things moving; the location and sets were interesting without being distractig, and the cinematography was excellent. And, as I said, it was a decent enough story to keep me from looking at my watch - always a positive.

Summary: Who Okay-ed this script?
Review: I have seen bad movies before, but not with so many headlining actors/actresses. It's absurd and there is no rational explenation for why such big names would make such a poor excuse for a film. It doesn't even have "it's moments". The script is badly adapted from a novel by Alice Hoffman, who, I might add, is a very talented writer. "Practical Magic" is slow and has no tention nor climax. Scenes happen seemingly at random and I found it hard to sympathize with the characters AT ALL. I expect this type of low quality from movies designed for the "Seventeen Magazine"- "Dawson's Creek" audience, but not from the big names who made there money not only by being talented, but by choosing well written scripts. If you have a choice, watch "Speed" or "Portait of a Lady".
