Summary: A good story that could have been portrayed better
Review: This movie definitely had a very touching and captivating story as well as a great performance by DiCaprio; however, it was very slow-moving and boring. Most of the movie shows Gilbert interacting with his new girlfriend or with his retarded brother Arnie in a day-to-day manner, which makes the story much more mundane than it could have been. This is worth seeing, but it's too slow-moving to want to see more than once, which is disappointing for a movie that had such huge potential.

Summary: A "real" film
Review: I believe I saw this film years ago when it first came out in the cinema. I caught part of recently on a cable channel and decided I wanted to see it properly. I was really blown away by the story and the acting. I guess the film did not make much of an impression first time around because I was only 14. This film is amusing, sad, shocking, uplifting.... All the components that make up "real life". It was refreshing to see a film that dared to show reality. Too many films these days are just eye candy. Often starring people who can barely act. The entire cast was outstanding, particularly Juliette Lewis who appeared to be the perfect match for the frustrated Gilbert. All in all a brilliant film.

Review: This is an outstanding movie, astounding casting for this movie, Johnny Depp isn't the only good actor in this movie. Leonardo DiCaprio gives his only good performance, in my opinion. I love the non-fairy tale story line in this movie. This movie is deffinately on my top 3 favorite movies of all time. The acting is so realistic in this movie, you can feel the pain & drama in this film. You must see this movie, it's an essential. Don't rent it first, buy it, it will please you GUARANTEED.

Summary: Let's not Ruin Peter Hedges' Good work now!
Review: Now I am a big fan of Johnny Depp and I think that Leonardo DiCaprio is one of the best actors to hit the silver screen, but I think that sometimes truth to a story is necessary in order to keep the story worth seeing or reading. In this case, this movie failed to remain true to the heartfelt story that Peter Hedges wrote. The author's first novel was outstanding, and I have read it time and time again; couldn't put it down, in fact. But the movie just drops the heart right out of the bottom of this story and turns it into something I feel it was never meant to be.While there is no doubt in my mind that this movie is an example of the best work that either Johnny Depp or Leonardo DiCaprio have ever done, the directing, screenwriting and production of this movie failed to maintain the true heart of the story; the feelings of Gilbert for his family and his town, and the ultimate sadness of being a thirty-something living in the small town in which he was born. Read the book. Watch the movie if you are interested in Depp or DiCaprio, but the *heart* of this story is entirely in the original work.

Summary: A Wonderful Up Lifting Movie
Review: This movie is about the trials Gilbert Grape's life. From having a mentally handicapped brother to a heavily obese mother, Gilbert has it hard. He's struggling to find his place in this world but to also keep his family alive. This is perhaps Johnny Depp's best perfomance, and Leonardo Dicappreo portrayal as Arnie is absolutely stunning. It's a must see movie.

Summary: My personal favorite
Review: I don't know what it is about this movie. I was really blown away by Leonardo DiCaprio's portrayal of Arnie, I think he really steals the show. The movie itself is set in a small town and is about those stuck in it. The movie is not action packed, doesn't have a sweeping soundtrack and I don't really think has a hidden deep meaning. It is just a movie portraying the bleakness of small town life and one "strange" family's dealings with it.

Review: This movie has become by favorite movie (just beating The Lord
of The Rings). The talent is tremendous. Both Juliette Lewis and Johhny Depp stole my heart. For Leonardo DiCaprio, this is (in my opininon) the best movie of his career. The story is heart-warming and some-what depressing. Gilbert reminds me some-what of Kurt Cobain. (minus drugs and the beard) In this movie, the cast and crew make you feel like you are actually in Endoora. Some people critizize the "slowness" of this movie, but I think the pace emphasizes the dull, sad life Gilbert leads.
