Summary: A fine adaptation of a fine book.
Review: I read the book first. I loved the book, and I reviewed it in the book section of Amazon.com with five stars. The movie is very different from the book, but I really enjoyed it. Johnny Depp is good in the starring role, and the supporting cast do a nice job as well. However, unlike many people, I was not particularly impressed by Leonardo Capriotti's portrayal of Depp's retarded younger brother. It just doesn't ring true to me. I feel that he over-acted like crazy. I've known retarded people, and he was not very convincing, in my opinion. I once heard or read somewhere that some people actually thought that Leo really was retarded in actuality. Anyone who actually would come to that conclusion obviously hasn't spent too much time with the retarded. DiCaprio was trying to hard, and it showed. I thought that his performance could have been more controlled. I don't fault DiCaprio's earnest efforts, but he really went too far. The movie was quite enjoyable, however, and I highly recommend it. It's based on a very strange novel (but an excellent one), and it must have been hard to convert it into a movie, since the book had a somewhat warped, surreal quality. I highly recommend both the movie and the book, but I'd urge you to read the book first.

Review: I think this movie was great. At some parts it made me cry for so long that I thought I wasn't going to stop and at other parts it made me laugh so hard I had to pause the movie untill I was done laughing. I think everyone should watch this movie because it shows you how great your life is compard to theirs.

Review: This movie opened my eyes the first time I saw it. Well, actually, I had to wait until the movie was over to open my eyes, because they were filled with tears the whole time. Leonardo Dicaprio portrays a eightteen year old, mentally retarted boy. Dicaprio's great acting shows people what it is really like to be mentally retarted at such a young age. Johnny Depp also portrays his brother Gilbert, very well.

Review: This movie does it all. It makes you laugh and cry. It touches you and makes you angrier than hell. Leo does an exceptional job. The first time I saw this was long before Leo's big break and I thought the Arnie was actually played by a mentally challanged youth. Johnny Depp and Juliete Lewis perfrom amazingly as well. I just have one more thing to say "Wheres Arnie"

Review: This movie truly captures what it's like to suffocate in a small town. To feel that you are living your life for everyone else. It gives you the essence of what it is like to believe that you were meant for more important and better things than small town living. That your life has to mean more than a meager existence. And when you feel that you can't grasp the next rung on the ladder that is when life feels the most desperate.

Review: Leo the Great? I'm not sure how he got nominated for an oscar here, but at least he didn't get it! Portraying a mentally handicapped person is like doing a drunk or a dream sequence. There's no standard. Give me a break! The lighting sucks, the dialog is believable but not great, the plot is ?? Gilbert's mother is the best character on screen. This was a movie to get TV hunk Depp on to the big screen.
