Summary: impossible experience is enthralling
Review: When I saw this 1959 production recently, I was as enthralled as I was years ago. This time, however, it was not Shelly Winters or Lou Jacobi who impressed me, but Joseph Schildkraut, who's portrayal of Otto Frank makes the entire film plausable. His iron will along with Anne's love of life, hold the group together. This film still holds viewers interest today, despite the heavy handed used of violins marking the most poignant moments.

Summary: A VERY Good Movie.
Review: This movie really was something. Okay, well the only reason I wanted to see this movie is because Richard Beymer is in it. But I appreciate it far more than I think I ever would. World War II amazes me...the worst war ever fought; millions of people murdered. It's awful to think how terrifying those times were. Especially in this movie, the scenes when the two families have to be so quiet that they can hardly breathe make me think, would I really be able to do this? Or when they watch almost all of Holland be blown up to pieces from their attic window, it really makes you wonder how they could survive so long. These two families had such courage, such hope, and even more faith. The actors and actresses who portrayed these people were magnificent; I can't put it into words. I really appreciate this movie. So much in fact that I would watch it a million times and still appreciate it as I did when I first watched it.

Summary: Gripping and suspenseful, but made Anne into a plaster saint
Review: The Diary of Anne Franks was an okay movie. You have to sympathize with the characters no matter what you think. It was gripping and suspenseful at the right moments, but I felt it made Anne into a plaster saint. Now that we know that Anne had some hatred of the Nazis and frankly discussed sex and her parents' loveless marriage in diary entries her father witheld from publication, the depiction of Anne believing people are really good at heart really doesn't hold well today. that's a problem with this movie, but otherwise it's pretty good.

Summary: It was very realistic and good
Review: It was very good! It was about Anne and her family and another person going into hiding. I think it must have been very hard for them to be cooped up for two years. I recommend this book to anyone who likes to find out about WWII.

Summary: GREAT LOOK INTO WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED
Review: I have watched this movie 10x. I feel as though I am Anne Frank I remember one part when the burglar was underneath them. I dived onto the floor and was very quiet. I mean when i heard the sounds of the green police. And I literally fainted when the green police found them.

Summary: A Suspenceful and Funny Movie
Review: The writers of the video "The Diary of Anne Frank" are Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. I give "The Diary of Anne Frank" a 3-star rating.

To begin with, "The Diary of Anne Frank" is suspenseful. You never know what will happen next. The suspense especially makes you wonder if or when the Gestapo will come for the Franks, the Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel. The different music tones also add suspense, especially the fast and enthralling music heard near the end.

Furthermore, "The Diary of Anne Frank" is comical. When Anne spills milk on Mrs. Van Daan's coat, she gets outrageously mad, acts insane, and burst out crying. She does the same when Mr. Van Daan says he is going to sell the coat for some money. When Mrs. Van Daan kisses Mr. Frank it is hilarious. It becomes even funnier when Mrs. Frank goes over and wipes Mr. Frank's mouth off. Another humorous incident is when Peter calls Anne Miss Quack Quack and Anne gets really mad.

Moreover, this video received many Academy Awards in 1959. It won "Best Cinematography," "Best Supporting Actress" for Shelly Winters, "Best Set Direction," and "Best Art Direction" all for black and white.

If you enjoyed this movie, I would recommend that your read Anne's diary. Another World War II movie you might enjoy is "Pearl Harbor."

My name is Brandon. I am 14 years old and am from Concord, NC.

Summary: unfortunate timing
Review: there was only one reason this monumental film was not awarded the "Best Picture" oscar at the academy awards. that reason is simple; the year of its release. 1959 was an unfortunate year for George Stevens to release this masterpiece of filmmaking, because released that same year was "Ben-Hur". any connesieur of classic films can attest to the magnitude of "Ben-Hur", winner of 11 academy awards. inspite of the legendary status of "Ben-Hur", "The Diary Of Anne Frank" deserves just as much recognition.
"The Diary Of Anne Frank" deserved the oscar just as much if not more than "Ben-Hur". the film was based on the diary written by Anne Frank while she was hiding out in the attic of an old house with her family and several others to avoid Nazi capture during those tragic days of WWII.
the movie is nothing less than monumental and a perfect tribute to Anne Frank and her family. it is nearly 3 hrs. long but easily maintains one's interest throughout.

there exist no words to justly express greatness of this magnificent opus of filmmaking. accolades to George Stevens for giving us this film. and God bless the entire Frank family for continuing to bring hope to the hearts of people globally for over 60 years. AMEN

Summary: Anne Deserves Better
Review: There is no excuse why the best and most widely read Holocaust narrative couldn't have been made into a far superior movie than this disorganized and boring flick. For most Americans, The Diary of Anne Frank is the only Holocaust book they will ever read and most Americans won't even read that. Consequently, it is vitally important there be an excellent film adaptation of the book. This dull, watered down and not particularly well cast or acted film is not the perfect film memorial to the 7 million victims it needs to be.

Summary: It's Okay, But It Doesn't Do the Play Justice
Review: "The Diary of Anne Frank," as directed by George Stevens, is certainly not a bad movie. However, it seems to lack the certain spark, sincerity, and tight acting of a truly great movie, and come to think of it, the play on which it is based. The movie is hurt severely by Millie Perkin's, who is whiney and lifeless as Anne Frank. Of all the worthy talent out there, why did they have to pick someone who was not only bad, but 10 years to old for the part. Ed Wynn is dreadfully miscast as grumpy dentist Dussel, and the whole movie is dragged on for so long that the ending is anticlimatic. On the positive side, Joseph Schildkraut and Lou Jacobi recreate the roles they held on Broadway with sincerity and gusto, and Shelly Winters won an Oscar for her delightful performence as Mrs. Van Daan. The screanplay by Albert Hacket and Francis Goodrich is also quite moving. Not a bad showing, but Stevens could have done better.
