Rating: Summary: Why'd they skip so much of the book? Review: Wuthering Heights, as a movie, was very good. Unless, you happened to read the novel. Then, don't even bother to watch the movie. They omit, in my mind, some of the best scenes from the novel. Where are all the children characters like Cathy, Heathcliff, and Hindley had? They played very important roles in the novel. They did an excellent job of remaking the first half of the novel, then they jumped to the end and completely skipped the second half. If you like romantic movies, but prefer not to read the novels, then you will love this movie. However, if you prefer to read the good ol' classics, like myself, don't waste your time on this remake; you will be very disappointed.
Rating: Summary: A masterpiece. One of the greatest movies of all time. Review: The first time I saw this movie, I was 17 years old and came in at the end of the movie where Laurence Olivier gives his speech during the death scene. I did not even know who Olivier was at the time, and had never read "Wuthering Heights". At the end of the movie, I turned to my mother, with tears literally streaming down my face, and asked her who was this actor. Since then, I have seen the movie, and read the book numerous times, and never tire of it. I could listen, with rapt attention, to Laurence Olivier read names out of the telephone book.
Rating: Summary: Avoid this! Review: Avoid this adaptation at all costs! It is a rape and a mockery of Emily Bronte's soul-stirring novel. Anyone who is a fan of this wonderful story will turn up their noses at the ridiculous dramatic profiles of Olivier and the passages that presumably came from the pen of an over-zealous screen writer.
Rating: Summary: One of the best ever Review: Romances are seldom this lyrical. A lovely script and one of the rare films that is "better than the book." Fierce yet stately, with some truly inspired scenes (the glances during the Mozart harpsichord piece come to mind).
Rating: Summary: Pure movie magic Review: Does it really matter that this was released in 1939? What about the cheap production values, weak set construction, dated acting, primitive cinematography and low-budget sound editing? No, the fact is that it still can't be done better today. Olivier, Oberon, Niven and Wyler made a movie masterpiece that stands up remarkably well today despite numerous TV broadcasts and big budget remakes. The original is still the best. Watch for yourself. Within just a few minutes you won't be able to stop.
Rating: Summary: A masterpiece! Review: This is a great film with a very haunting theme. I saw it in the late 80's. I saw it but only once. Why? because for some unknown reasons, it exudes a really heavy feeling. It is strange that I love this film, yet cannot watch it until completion. The feeling like being in the twilight zone. It is about a very sad love story. More tragic than Romeo and Juliet. But a masterpiece nonetheless.I highly recommend it to everyone.
Rating: Summary: Not a review, but a plea... Review: ...for a (re)release on DVD. Why is this film no longer available? What is wrong with the studios? You can get all the made-for-TV versions of the Bronte sisters and Austen books, but where are the classics? I would definitely own this one--- not a remake in French or the MTV version (I mean, honestly!). And where oh where is the Olivier/Garson version of Pride and Prejudice? That's never been on DVD at all. Perhaps if enough of us classic fans clamor for satisfaction, the studios might respond. Take heed, Criterion Collection! Give us classic Olivier on DVD! Please!
Rating: Summary: Tired of reading people compares this movie with the book Review: Usually, I read the lowest rating reviews first when I consider to buy a movie. I read all of bad reviews of WH and found that most of people gave it bad review is one who compare with the book. I have read the book and have watched all versions of WH including French and British ones. This version is the best. The book was masterpiece but lengthy and loose. This adaptation, based on Emily Bronte's novel,is unique. Forget the book, Just watch the movie with open mind and different vision.

What a remarkable cast, including the incomparable David Niven and Merle Oberon, and of course Laurence Olivier! You expect 5 star performances from such people, and will not be disappoinred here!
This classic, written by Emily Bronte (one of three talented sisters, Charlote and Anne, the other two) was born in Yorkshire, England. This is her only novel, and it is an esteemed classic. A story of doomed love and revenge. This is Wyler's version. Wyler, in turn, directed some of the best loved films of his time.
Wuthering Heights is a dark tale of the impossible romance between Cathy Earnshaw/Linton (Merle Oberson) and Heathliff (Laurence Olivier), who was adopted by her father as a foundling.
Truly a dark, moody novel. The movie does it justice and if there was ever any doubt, establishes Wyler as a truly great director.
