Review: This film almost left me dumbfounded. I wasn't quite sure what to make of it.
The Heather on the supposed Yorkshire moor(actually filmed in, Ventura County, California) is massive and much to big.
Merle Oberon is pathetic in this role and how she got the part i'll always wonder (perhaps being engaged to influential director Alexander Korda just might of helped the situation).
Laurence Olivier is the best thing in this film his performance is perhaps his best film effort around this time.
LO fans should definately watch it.

Summary: Hard to rate this one . . .
Review: It's hard to rate because the title is "Wuthering Heights" and yet, to me, bears very little resemblance to the book. The movie does not address what happened to Cathy's brother, apparently Cathy's daughter and the sons of Heathcliff and Cathy's brother never existed. The movie does not show Cathy for the selfish, tantrum-throwing, almost evil person that she is in the book.I think if the names had been changed, as well as the name of the film and a few other minor items, it could have been sent out as a completely unrelated movie. Even so, taken on its own merits and not comparing it to the book, it is an excellent movie in its own right.

Summary: a wonderful heart wrenching love story
Review: I have always loved Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier. I would not want to see a remake of this movie with any other actors in it, they were the best and made the movie perfect. I think it is one of the most wonderfully moving films I have ever had the pleasure to see.

Summary: Great film, strays from the novel
Review: This film is beautiful and romantic in it's own right, though it is very different from the novel. It maintains the essence of Emily Bronte's novel, capturing the romance of Catherine and Heathcliff, but "softens" the characters and drastically edits the novel's plot (ending halfway through the novel). Judging it by its own merits as a classic romantic movie, it is highly enjoyable, and Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon give wonderful performances (perhaps not as the characters were intended in the novel, but the characters they develop are charming nonetheless). Overall, a highly enjoyable film!

Summary: I actually preferred the 1992 version-
Review: On a whim, i went out this weekend and bought this version and the 1992 version. (These movies don't even began to compare to the book, but I won't go into that). Laurence Olivier, as great an actor as he is, doesn't fit Heathcliff much. Well, not with that beautiful appearance. If he had been a little uglier, he'd have been perfect. And Cathy( merle Oberon)- she's nothing to brag about. They cut out some important scenes, and changed around some sentances that I thought were crucial to the plot. This movie is worth it, for the great romantic scenes, and olivier's passionate moments with Cathy, but if you've got to choose between this one and the 1992, choose the '92 version.

Summary: They murdered the book
Review: First of all, I would like to say that I don't have any quams with the acting. That was very good, although a bit melodramatic in the Hollywood style of the 1940's. However, as someone who read the book, then watched this movie, I have to say that it is dissapointing. It seemed to me like the movie was toned down to be more Hollywood and happy. Heathcliff is not as evil and angry in the movie. I think the directors were trying to make Laurence more like a typical "good" hero. Also, the ending was very happy between Cathy and Heathcliff. This doesn't happen in the book. I think that is you are looking for a good epic love story, this movie is good. However, fans of Emily Bronte's book, and the dark aspects of it will be dissapointed.

Summary: Legendary Lovers
Review: I watched this film as a fan of William Wyler and because I had read the Bronte novel in university. I also knew it was one of the legendary classic films to come out of Hollywood. Some people seem to object to this film because it only covers the first half of the novel. From my point of view, that was a wise choice because I found the second half of the novel to be a let down compared to the intensity and feeling of the first half. Laurence Olivier perfectly embodies the loving and cruel sides of Heathcliff's complicated personality, while Merle Oberon, never much of an actress, brings a lot of feeling and beauty to Cathy. The supporting cast is excellent, as Wyler (yet again) gets top performances from everyone. The haunting quality of the novel is captured in the film, and it's easy to see why Heathcliff and Cathy have become two of the most legendary lovers of all time. And coming from me, not a fan of romance movies, that says a lot.

Review: A wonderful film about love, obsession and revenge. Merle Oberon is great as Cathy and Laurence Olivier gives one of his best performances. It doesn't matter that this film is not exactly like the book by Emily Bronte. When you have a film of this proportion, the book becomes second best!

Review: A not-quite-faithful adaptation: Heathcliff and Cathy are much too nice, and everything between Cathy's death and Mr. Lockwood's arrival at Wuthering Heights has been removed entirely. Laurence Olivier does make a handsome Heathcliff, however, so all is not lost.
