Summary: Probably my favorite movie ever
Review: I adore this movie - it's one of a very few that I could watch over and over and over again, and still enjoy. The entire cast is superb, and the script if witty and intelligent. A delightfully funny movie. Watch it and you'll love it.

Summary: so boring and dull
Review: Screwball comedy is supposed to be funny, right? Although the basic story is sound the dialogue is as unimaginative as it can be; apparently three hollywood stars and a famous director draw the attention to this picture, and made it earn the honors of the 100 best films of the AFI list. I really do not understand its merits. To confer this film the same honors as Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Double Indemnity and other Hollywood golden age classics is a terrible mistake. Even Citizen Kane had moments of comedy wittier than any scene in Philadelphia Story. I guess this is a typical example of what the critics refer by the remark that in the old times, frequently, it was enough to gather big stars and a famous director to have a commercially successful film. Besides, Katherine Hepburn is not funny at all, when she tries to be funny it does not come through as natural and one gets the impression that she is just trying to be cute. Cary Grant was much better in later films, as in to Catch a Thieve, and Charade. Jimmy Steward was the only one that stands out.

While I laughed so much watching movies that are not per se comedies, such as Casablanca, Double Indemnity, and Citizen Kane, I had to make an effort to stay awake during Philadelphia Story (supposedly a comedy which turned out literaly a screwball). I also wondered if the music composer was on strike at the time of filming, because there was virtually none. For a delicious comedy with a witty script I recommend Ninotchka, with Garbo and she is very funny!!!!

All the reviews by viewers seems to have a contrary view, and I thought that I was the only one not getting it. But, I went to the movie database here at amazon and found several among the few reviewrs that agreed with me despite that it took them so much writing in order to say by the end that the movie was not funny at all. Those reviews are found under "external reviews" and newsgroup comments".

I feel relieved for not having wasted money in buying this film.

Summary: One of the best movies ever!
Review: I absoloutely adore this movie. there's nothing better than to lie back and watch Kate, Jimmy, and Grant toss critisims and drunk remarks back and forth at the drop of a hat. Ruth Hussey also does a stupendous jod as Liz, and doesn't get enough credit for it. Virginia Wielder as Tracy's little sister is great. It's an absouloutley wonderful movie from begining to end. watch this movie! i garuntee you'll love it. P.S. I'm 11 and am looking for other kids who like classic movies. If you are one, email me!

Review: This is the most stirring, beautiful, liltingly, whisperingly resonant film ever made. Beautiful.

Summary: Perfection, as always
Review: I live in LA, and this past Saturday saw the LACMA George Cukor presentation of "The Philadelphia Story" for about the twelvth time (!) with a packed audience! And over 600 seats, too! It was wonderful. There wasn't a space of five minutes where the audience wasn't laughing hysterically. Just goes to show that Kate, Cary, and Jimmy still have that drawing power!

Summary: My all-time favorite film...
Review: ...and I love a lot of films. But this charmer is one that I have watched over and over, and as so many other customers have also said, I never tire of it. It is that rare gem that just gets better with age; never loses its edge, never seems boring or dated. And with a heroine like Tracy Lord as its protagonist, played so delectably by the divine Katharine Hepburn, what's not to love? If you're an LA fan of this film, be sure to catch the tribute to George Cukor at the LACMA this month. It will be well worth a look!

Summary: One of the best comedies ever made
Review: I never tire of watching this film. I pick up something new every time I view it, whether it's a funny line, or a certain telling look from Tracy to one of her paramours. Couldn't have a dreamier cast of actors-who couldn't fall in love with either Jimmy or Cary??? Of course every girl in the world would love to look like Katherine Hepburn, especially in those fabulous clothes, or have her wit. I'm positive once you see this film it will rank as one of your favorites for the rest of your movie viewing years!

Summary: "I don't want to be worshipped- I just want to be loved!"
Review: My God- how can you review an absolutely perfect movie like this one? Kate Hepburn was her usual phenominal self, as were Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant. The dialogue, however, was the sweetest icing on the already delicious cake. If I could, I'd give this movie ten stars!

Summary: "Doubtless, without a doubt"
Review: Cary Grant's finest performance. Period. End of story. They don't make films with this kind of wit anymore, and even if they did, I'm not sure there'd be actors to deliver them.
