Summary: Caution: Electricity!
Review: The electricity crackles between Bogart and Bacall in this film version of Hemingway's novel. Bacall in her first role is sultryness personified (and it turns out has quite a good singing voice too). It's easy to see why Bogart fell for her. The film doesn't drag at any point and the dialogue is sharp especially between the two main characters. This is in my top 5 Bogart films and I would suggest everyone go out and get it.

Summary: A Timeless Classic
Review: This is an incredible movie. I was in awe every minute of the way as I watched the sultry Lauren Bacall in her screen debut. I now see why this movie made Lauren Bacall a legendary star. She and Bogey had the perfect chemistry on screen and watching them on the screen is like fallling in love again. A perfect movie for to watch on a Friday night.

Summary: A fantastic film for any Bacall/Bogart fans.
Review: I fell in love with this movie. The chemistry between Bogart and Bacall made me cringe every time they were in the room together. I loved it. This movie should be seen before Casablanca, because I think viewers will appreciate the realness of their love over any acting. You can't help but surrender yourself.

Summary: Fine entertainment with all concerned in their prime.
Review: 3 1/2 stars actually. The film is fine entertainment with Bogie,Bacall and Howard Hawks in top form. In 1950 Warners came out with another version called The Breaking Point which starred John Garfield and was faithful to the Hemingway novel. It was equally good.

Review: I've read the novel on which this ostensibly based, and I wouldn't recommend that to anyone but a Hemmingway fan. This movie follows the plot-line of Casablanca much more than it does it's namesake, but believe me, that's a good thing.This is the movie that Bogie and Betty met on, and you can see the sparks fly from the word go. When she's leaving the room, and turns around to say "If you need me, just whistle. You know how to whistle, don't you Steve? You just put your lips together and blow." I mean, wow!

Review: Bacall makes this movie; her heroine brings new life (and witty repartee) to Bogey's typical world-weary antihero. As "Slim", her curious mixture of vamp and vulnerability is irresistable-- no wonder Bogart fell in real life!

Summary: The definition of "chemistry" in Hollywood's Golden Age
Review: Everything works in this movie. If you focus on the Bogey and Bacall romance, it rings true. If you are even a bit of a history buff and, as in "Casablanca," look at the tension between the Free French and the Vichy puppets in the colonial bureaucracy, it has credibility. The sidebars with the great Hogey Carmichael and Bogey cohort Walter Brennan only add to the wonderful texture of this classic film.
