Rating: Summary: a great disappointment in contrast to the book Review: I suppose my judgment is partially swayed by the fact that I read the book first, but I was let down by the film rendition of To Kill a Mocking Bird. In fact, I couldn't even bear to watch the movie because it was totally destroying my imagined setting and characters. You just don't get a feel for the town of Maycomb, and, unlike in the book, you can't really feel anything toward the characters like anger, resentment, or love. That was probably one of the best things about the book. And the actor chosen for Dill was horrifyingly GEEKY. Too many parts left out, and it skips through the plot.
Rating: Summary: Great movie, superior acting by Gregory Peck Review: Bonjour! My name is Ashley. I hope you like my review. My mother, a few months ago, decided that she wanted to read Harper Lee's novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. I read it after her and we both loved it. Well, we of course had to see the movie. I was very pleased with it. Gregory Peck does such an extraordinary job as Atticus. He is very believable. The only movie I had ever seen Peck in before was Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn (which is a very good movie if you like romantic films). After seeing this, I know that I am going to have to watch many more of his movies. While visiting my cousins in America I saw AFI's "100 years, 100 stars". I do not remember what place he was given, but he was definitely worthy of the number 1 spot along with my other favorite actor, Jimmy Stewart. Bogie's good, but these guys are better. Watch the movie, I know you will enjoy it. Anyone with half decent taste in movies will like this film.
Rating: Summary: A truly amazing video Review: This movie impressed me very much, especially Jem's and Boo's acting. I also was very impressed by the acting of Gregory Peck as Atticus, and his script portrayal was amazing, especially when the farmer spat on him. That is amazing, to stand up to that bull.
Rating: Summary: I feel that this movie is one of my all time favorites! Review: I first read the book as an assignment in the eigth grade in 1986. I felt that the book was a wonderful story told through the eyes of a very curious girl. the story intreaged me. I saw the movie a few months after and it is now one of my favorites. I hope all teens get the chance to read and see this movie in the school years I would suggets to everyone.
Rating: Summary: Kudos for "Mockingbird": A Labor of Love Review: I first read Harper Lee's Pulitzer winning novel when I was in the 10th Grade, and I watched the movie adaptation soon thereafter. With this new DVD version of "To Kill a Mockingbird", I have developed an even greater appreciation of this timeless story told through the eyes of Scout. While this story is timeless, I was taken aback to see how much the times have really changed. What other story could depict the legal profession in such a noble manner? After watching Atticus Finch argue on behalf of Tom Robinson, there is no one who could not help but have some great admiration for the role of the lawyer. There is much to contrast with our notion of lawyers today... self-absorbed fictional lawyers such as "Ally McBeal" and pandering "real-life" lawyers like the O.J. defense team. Perhaps this can be attributed to the obvious nature of evil in simpler times when the values were black and white. This DVD version is beautifully re-mastered in B/W...I was especially enthralled by the scenes of Jem, Scout and Dill at the old Radley House, and of Jem and Scout's "final journey" together through the woods. These Southern gothic scenes evoke all of the childhood fears and insecurities which most of us remember, over the backdrop of extreme societel repression and cruel poverty. The added director's commentaries and featurette are of tremendous value in further understanding this movie. "To Kill a Mockingbird" was fittingly ranked in the AFI's top 100 of the 20th Century. This movie was a labor of love and will touch anyone who watches it.
Rating: Summary: It was a shame to colorize this eery classic. Review: I read this book in seventh grade in the 70's and was touched by the relationships of all the characters. I still have that book. I also have the movie on VHS in Black and White. It was a great disappointment to see that this fine film was colorized. It took away the opportunity for the viewer to use their imagination in depicting the rose garden of the grouchy Miss Boles or the solomness of the town during the depression. These classic films that are being released colorized are robbing the viewer of the purity of the film art and the period which the film represents. Color is not always an addition, many times it is a minus.
Rating: Summary: Powerful is the only way to fully describe this video. Review: Gregory Peck is such a talented actor. He portrayed the character of Atticus Finch so well. The viewer felt every emotion, every inner struggle that he went through. And the other actors were excellent as well. The children were so believable. After watching this movie, all you want to do is have a good cry. After crying, you just want to sit there and think about things, try to figure out how to make the world better, help people overcome their prejudices. This movie is a classic film with so much more to it than meets the eye.
Rating: Summary: One of the best book-to-film adaptations ever! Review: A truly amazing and superbly acted film. A story about an attorney's struggle to do what is right by both his client and his family during racially difficult times. Gregory Peck commands respect and authority every time he is on the screen. If only book-to-film adaptation's today were this wonderful. And speaking of the book, it's even better than the film but you'll have to order it here; it's a banned book! (Shameful!)
Rating: Summary: One of the best clasics of all time!!!!! Review: This is a movie that was daring in that era (1960s')to produce. It showed America the way the judicial system was and how people felt in that era.We can still learn from this movie today!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: the most beautiful film i own... Review: and i own over 300 films. and yes i/ve read the book, and my background is such (bachelors in english and classical studies) that i usually *hate* it when a film disagrees w/ its source. but sometimes you really do have to view them as different things. gregory peck/s performance is just plain awe-inspiring. the delicacy of the black and white film is unbelievable. i/d put it at *least* in the top 5.
