Summary: Not a Harrison Ford film
Review: Our daughter, a fair judge of movies, recommended this one to us. We weren't disappointed. The acting was excellent, especially Martinez's portrayal of a young and talented woman trying to make sense of her life. The film rang true to life in how events can change from peaceful to shattering with no warning. Good health one day. Cancer the next. I don't think the ending displayed a lack of nerve on the director's part. To keep it from turning into a Harrison Ford movie, it had to end that way.

Summary: Don't Waste your time on this one.
Review: This was by far one of the most awful movies we have ever experienced. As "deep" as some may think this movie was, does take make up for the fact that it is simply a bore. Through the whole movie you are waiting for something even slightly interesting to happen and it never does. How this movie ended, made absolutely no difference. You are left feeling so uninterested in the movie itself that you really don't care how it ends. I wish I could get my rental $'s back.

Summary: Great Movie, Great Score!
Review: I had very little expectations for this DVD, I just rented it because it seemed mildly interesting in the package. I was completely consumed by the story, performances, musical score, and even the vocal offerings of Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. She has a beautiful voice with a raw, unpolished quality that hits you right in the heart. As for the ending, listen to the commentary by John Sayles(a feature available on the DVD)and you'll realize it ended the only way it could. Anything else would have been a cheap commercialization of a story that meant so much more. If this flick leaves you disappointed, you didn't get it! By the way, I just ordered my own DVD, and the soundtrack CD.

Summary: Wow. Amazing in every possible way.
Review: I simply must take issue with the previous reviews. "Limbo" is a fantastic film. It is truly absorbing for the very reason that other people who are more used to, or hoping for, some kind of action-filled cliche movie would have preferred. You can't go into this movie wanting another typical lame Hollywood ending movie. Sayles' movies aren't that way. Yet neither are they boring--far from it! "Limbo" is about the lives of the characters. The key is to realize that by watching this particular film you are specifically watching a series of events in their lives go into inexorable motion, and then watching the consequences. The events themselves are quite simple on the surface...hence again, why some may call this boring as there are no cartoon characters, jet fighters, aliens, robots, explosions and the like to segue into the next scene. The scenes of the marooned group reading the diary they found in the ruins of their shelter are stunning. And as for the ending, well, (don't worry, no giveaways here! ) how else could it have ended? Anything else would have been another stupid Hollywood ending that leaves nothing to the imagination. And also, ponder the title itself. You think about this movie after you leave the theater, after you turn off the TV, you discuss it with friends. That's what good movies do...make you keep talking about them after the credits roll. If you want to see a truly original movie that will stay with you for a long time, get "Limbo." Whew. Thanks!

Review: What a complete waste of two hours. There may have been some deep meaning to this movie - but it is still totally boring. At the end you think to yourself - "You've got to be kidding me!"

Review: I give this move a NEGATIVE 5 rating. Could this movie have been anymore boring? Sure the acting was good - but again, how boring it was almost painful! I watched this movie with a large group who also felt the same way - what does that tell you? Very dreary.

Summary: Was my copy of this film was defective?
Review: Sorry, I suppose I'm not intellectual enough to appreciate a story without an ending. Before reading other reviews, I honestly believed my copy of the video was defective and that the tape had run out before the movie was over. Those who like this style must tear out the final chapters of their novels before reading them.

Summary: John Sayles strikes gold in Alaska
Review: Once again John Sayles has shown us why most critics and many moviegoers consider him one of the best directors currently working in film. From his choice of actors to play his primary roles to his choice of the Alaskan landscape on which to unfold his drama, Sayles has done it again. As others, I was not expecting the way John Sayles chose to end this film, but if you think about it, doesn't he leave us in Limbo too at the end?

Summary: Sayles does it again
Review: I've been a fan of Sayles' work from way back and am glad to see that he is still as quirky, original, and full of genuine human feeling as ever. Success has not spoiled Sayles."Limbo" surprised and pleased me at every turn. All the characters, from bit parts to the principals, are sensitively and accurately written. Sayles never fails to get a little scathing social commentary into the picture, and his throwaway dialogue about the Disney-fication of Alaska is true enough to hurt. You could call "Limbo" the antithesis of Lone Star. In Lone Star, one protagonist reassures the other at the end, "Forget the Alamo," meaning that we can cut free from our past and live for the present; in Limbo, all the characters are marked and haunted by their history, especially Strathairn's leading man (a remarkably appealing bit of acting). I was angry with Sayles, like many viewers, at the end [warning, spoilers!] -- so much suspense has been painstakingly developed, and then, agh, you never know whether these characters, about whom you have come to care deeply, will survive. However, I respect his decision to avoid a cliche in either possible resolution. "Limbo" is quite simply unforgettable, and a reminder that cinema doesn't have to be noisy and stupid, or exclusively focussed on pretty young people, to be fine and memorable. I recommend it to any serious film fan and particularly to those already charmed by the Sayles style.
