Summary: Not What I Expected
Review: The only reason it even gets two stars is that Meryl Streep is in it!When I saw this movie, I had just found Wicca. I pretty much said to anyone I met, "Hi, my name's Barb, nice to meet you. I'm a Witch." I was still in that first falling-in-love phase. As a matter of fact, I still thought that Wicca was "The Old Religion!" Someone reccomended this movie to me as a movie that portrayed Pagans in a positive light and it had Meryl Streep in it! I fully expected a story about a Lughhnasa Rite. NOT! This movie is actually quite boring and is the only movie with Meryl Streep in it that I've seen that I haven't liked! It's basically a story about three sisters that live in Ireland in the(I think)1950's. There is only one brief part about Pagans in it, and they are definietely NOT PORTRAYED IN A POSITIVE LIGHT! There is a brief scene of drunken revelry where a group of people who identify themselves as Pagans appear to be engaging in orgiastic behavior. Not only that, there is an intimation that they might possibly force the young woman who was brought to this not even knowing what it was, to join them!...

Summary: Sensitive, brainy, emotional cinematic masterpiece.
Review: The story of the Mundy family of five sisters, a mentally disoriented brother, and a growing up boy would have been mundane and sleepy if poorly directed and mediocrelly cinematographed. This is not the case here. This is a beautifully done movie. The phasing is slow to heighten the ambience of the rural Irish countryside. It's like being thrown to that mid-30's era in rural Europe, far from the madding war drums. The acting by everone is top notch.

Summary: A visual treat and an Irish delight!
Review: This was one of the most beautiful films I have seen in a long while. The Irish countryside was portrayed with the eye of an artist. The characters were believable and powerful studies in humanity -- especially the Irish kind. My heart will always stop when I think of the scene where the family dances outside the cottage. Poignant is the word that comes to mind. I can't wait to see this film again.

Summary: ACK!!!!!
Review: To those unacquainted with Brian Friel's wonderful stage play of the same name, this might be a mediocre, possibly even enjoyable film. Those of us, however, who know the REAL Dancing at Lughnasa are sure to hit the stop button on the VCR after the first five minutes. Oh, to be sure, the characters and BASIC storyline are the same in both the movie and the stage play, but there the end. In the movie, too many "behind-the'scenes" scenes are shown, depriving the audience of the brilliant "memory" feel of the stage play. One almost wonders if Friel collaborated on this terrible adaptation, or if he is instead pursuing litigation. There are some good points, however (I'm not ENTIRELY negative). The acting was pretty good (although some of the actors could have used a bit more dialect coaching) and the scenery & locations were outstanding. However, these were simply not enough to save this movie from a grisly end in my trash bin.
