Summary: GREAT MOVIE
Review: Superb direction.

Once again, Herzog takes relative unknown and fairly untested talent, mixes in a few real actors and come away with a movie that's much, much more than following the typical storyline to the end.

As funny as you want, as dramatic as possible. Herzog is a genius. He's done it again!!!

Summary: Werner Herzog's "Strozsek"
Review: SYNOPSIS: Bruno S[troszek] leaves the safety of the mental asylum in Germany only to find that the world is a sick place. He teams up with a cranky old man and a prostitute. All three leave Germany for the prospects of America, only to end up in Nowheresville, Wisconsin. Their trailer gets repossessed, and Bruno eventually takes radical action...

COMMENTS. Werner Herzog's "Strozsek" is not the vehemently anti-American work that so many people insist it is. Rather, it is simply the outlining of a sad truth: some people do not fit in anywhere. The comforts offered by the New World's subtle disparagments of poverty and outsiderdom at the expense of the Old World's more overt physical repression are only an outgrowth afforded by the latter to the former.

For outsiders (Bruno S), love will always be monstrous, death for them will always represent the culmination of their lives, and the world will only become meaningful for them at this moment of death. I feel that this message fatally undermines the film, as it paints a picture of the inevitablility of out-groups in society. Bruno is merely a subtler, unpaid version of the dancing chicken in that famous last shot of the film: they are both freaks, and they both afford people -be they pimps in Germany or mechanics in America- ample opportunity for entertainment. Herzog doesn't offer a solution, only a comment: which is fine, as far as it goes. Worth watching, though, for the aformentioned last scene of the film, only matched -perhaps even surpassed- in its awesome bleakness by the last shot of Max Ophuls's "Lola Montes" (1955).

DVD: A really good transfer from Anchor Bay.

Summary: Werner Runs Wild In America
Review: The venerable Werner Herzog offers his commentary on the red, white, and blue in this mightily endearing chronicle of three outcast sourkraut lovers en route to the United States. Bruno S. turns in a fine performance as the errant accordianist whose dreams fall flat in the American heartland. Also featured: a knock down instrumental rendering of "By The Time I Get To Phoenix."

Summary: A MASTERPIECE, ONE OF THE GREATEST FILMS EVER MADE!
Review: Werner Herzog's Stroszek (1977) is one of the ten greatest films ever made. It's almost equally as good as Herzog's The Enigma of Kasper Hauser (1974) and Aguirre the Wrath of God (1973).

Bruno S., the unknown soldier of cinema once again gives one of the finest performances I've ever seen. Eva Mattes is also wonderful as the prostitute Eva who along with Bruno and Herr Scheitz decide to emigrate from Berlin to Wisconsin to fulfill the elusive American dream. This tragicomedy is one of the bleakest films I've ever seen and also one of the funniest.

Herzog's brilliant film making style gives the entire film the look and feel of a documentary, yet like all of his films Stroszek is highly stylized. An absolute masterpiece! Rating: A 10 out of 10.
