Summary: NO DELETED SCENES!
Review: This is one of the greatest films of all time, and I eagerly awaited my DVD from Amazon.com, and just received it today....and unlike the advertisement on Amazon.com and the Magnoliamovie.com website, there are NO deleted scenes on this 2 DVD set. Unless I'm missing something, and after 2 hours of trying to find them and nothing indicating them (even cryptically) on the sleeve or the DVD menu, and not even finding them tucked away on the program someplace, I am concluding they are not there. Let this be a warning to you who wants to buy it -- the advert on here (amazon) is not correct. [If I'm somehow wrong and therefore insane, somebody please correct me because we all know there was plenty deleted in this movie during editing]

Summary: Amazing Film
Review: I would recommend turning up the volume on this movie. The soundtrack is great and the scenes are in perfect harmony with the score. Wonderful acting, especially by Cruise, his best performance to date. This movie will make you think.. days weeks.. months.. after viewing it. Now that is on DVD I get to watch it more often, which is a real treat because there is something new to see or a new concept to grasp with each viewing. The theme of the movie is very relevant "today". This film is already a masterpeice, but I think it will be even more appreciated as time goes along. Nice work PTA, Im waiting for the next one.

Summary: PTA is a genius
Review: This is one of the most defining films of 1999. The work that PTA put into shines through in every scene. He put a lot of hard work into a film that turns out to be one of the best of 99. Those who say against it were probably confused and did not want to admit to it. The fact is is that there is a lot here to like. The story revolves around nine people, one day, and many unexpected and highly emotional events. This is one for the film vault. It will stand as a monument to what someone can do with a little hard work and dedication.

Summary: Extraordinary film-making.
Review: I think the reason that as many people hate this film as love it is because it is so off-beat from typical hollywood fare, it can tend to scare away some viewers. I myself am completely wowed by this film and its DVD.

One thing that really sets this film apart from others is its limited amount of editing. Watch something cool, like "Run Lola Run", and you'll see razor-tight editing. It's an action flick. This one runs with the editing somewhat sloppy, giving it a very organic feel. The dialogue is also very organic. Characters stumble in their words. Yes. They talk like real people... every time I watch a movie I can never hear them stumbling to say something. And if the "uhhhh" comes up, it's very artificial. This is especially evident in a lot of old movies where there actors shout their lines at high speed, sounding so ridiculously unnnatural. And now, movies tend to edit things down so that you get the maximum impact from the least amount of words. This one is different.

The DVD: Has a second CD full of trailers/teasers/ additional scenes filmed but not used, some bloopers, a music video, and a dairy of the production of the show.. This is top notch stuff to add on to the DVD and I'm happy it took a bit longer to come out to put all that neat stuff here!

All in all, this purchase you will not regret!

Summary: Magnificent !
Review: First thing first, "Magnolia" has got to be one of my favourite movies ever! And I am not kidding, when people say they don't make movie like they used to anymore, they were right, until now. I came out of the cinema with a feeling you don't get often, "Shakespeare in Love", "Saving Private Ryan" and "Toy Story 2" is perhaps the only other movies that moved me this way. You get a feeling that you've got your money worth and thinking to yourself I am going to get this.

You will know this is a classic the moment you start watching the film, like all good movies, the cast has to gel well, the story has to be good, the acting has to be great and the director must be on form. Well, they are all fulfilled here. Every actors here gave great performances, Tom Cruise deservedly got his Oscar nomination, PT Anderson (writer and director of boogie night, which he also wrote this too) should have got one too, he certainly at least deserved a Oscar nomination for best director and best film.

The story itself is about the life of ten different characters during 24 hours. A games show host, his wife, his daughter, a boy genius, an ex boy genius, a dying man, his lost son, the dying man's wife, the caretaker and a police officer in law. Each one have their own problems to deal with and the director deal with them all superbly. All the characters have a connection with one and other through either relations or this "What do kid know" game show.

The real treat here is that all these stories are told in such a way that you won't keep your eyes off the screen, all the scene have an importance in the film in the story telling. Even though the film is a little over 3 hours long, it will fly by. Which brings me to the editing of this film because the film is so well put together from one scene to another, this helps the stories immensely, in addition the music by Aimee Mann is also well suited to the film, it gave the film an extra dimension and character. All these elements together made this the movie of the year for me; words can't describe how wonderful this film really is. Excellent, Wonderful, Clever, Brilliant and Engaging only comes close. Bottom line - Magnificent!

P.S. look out for the strange weather phenomenon at the end of the film, you'll never see that coming and it's so funny and clever.

Summary: Incredible
Review: Rarely does a film take the viewer on an emotional rollercoaster as incredibly stunning as this. This film is three hours of stupendous, top-of-the-line acting from the greatest ensemble of actors in a long long time. P.t. Anderson has put together a mind-blowing journey through a day of the lives of nine people. It exposes everything behind the faces in the media and in the world. It shows dreams and fears of all of us. The beginnings, the ends, the incredible love we posess for each other. No other film in recent history has given such immense care to the explanation of humanity. The DVD edition of this movie takes it another step by including a second disc of all the great extras. This movie is incredible. Period.

Summary: Overrated and sugarcoated with its length
Review: This movie does not deserve a long review so it will not get one. However I just wish to point to the fact that it is not an original storyline and technique. The movie "3 Days in the Valley" had earlier experimented with tying different story lines into one. The movie Magnolia attempts to be profound, but it is instead a movie for those who live similar lives to the characters portrayed in it. The movie only gets a star because I did not have much of a choice! Anyway it is a huge time waster with an inconclusive ending.

Summary: What WAS that?
Review: Good question. I haven't the foggiest idea. Either this movie was made to impress critics and film students who are attempting to figure out its deeper meaning, or it's just a really rotten movie. In my opinion, it was truly a waste of time. My husband and I have rented many movies over the years, and I can count on one hand the ones that I would rate as bad as this one. When I rent a movie, it's because I want a little entertainment. I'm not willing to rack my brain that hard trying to figure out such a mess of a movie.

The week after we watched Magnolia, I mentioned it to several friends and co-workers. Their reactions were all similar, such as "I wish I had known before you rented it, I would have told you to save your money", or "That was a terrible movie. How did you sit through the whole thing?" Then we'll have a few laughs about the lack of plot, overacting, and pitiful lack of sense the movie made.

I'm not a movie critic, or a student of "art" films, or maybe I'm just not deep enough to get it. I'm just a regular person who enjoys watching movies. This one stunk.

Summary: Bizarre and brilliant
Review: "Magnolia" is the movie that I thought really showed Paul Thomas Anderson's genius. It's pretentious, it's long, and it's excellent. Trying to write a synopsis of the plot is impossible, tho, so I won't bother, except to say that it's about a bunch of people in LA County. The rest is far too complex for a short review, and besides, you probably read it above. I'll just point out that all of the performances are amazing, which isn't terribly surprising, it being a PT Anderson film. Also, I think it's worth noting that "Magnolia" isn't for everyone. If you don't like downbeat films, you're probably not gonna like this one. Same goes for those who don't like strange plot elements. If you don't mind either of those, give it a shot. Concerning the ending (I won't give it away, but if you plan on seeing it, you might not want to read this anyway): a lot of people seem confused about it, understandably. I should point out that what happens at the climax really does happen in real life. It's uncommon, but it's not made up for the movie. Go look it up.

Summary: Anderson's Best Yet
Review: I found this movie to be all that a moive should be. It was creative, easy to follow, and got more and more interesting as the movie went on. Both Boggie Nights and Hard Eight had a special quality to them and that quality was amplified ten fold in the film. The singing in the middle of the movie and the surprise at the end are the elements that make this movie stand stand alone as a mountian of entertainment.

My only complaint is that the first time a watched the movie it was on video tape, a DVD format would have been prefered.
