Summary: Just Don't Think of it as a Romantic Comedy...
Review: If you're hoping this film will satiate your need for a tale of romantic love that softens the greediest of hearts, you will at least be rewarded with disappointment, but at most, an uncomfortable feeling of reticence.

Yet if you think of it as a cynical romp through a world in which love is dead and romance is an accessory, you might have some fun.

Catherine Zeta-Jones is pretty, catty, shallow, funny enough, and ultimately replacable. Casting a more endearing woman might have helped the romantic side of things, because it is too easy to disbelieve her genuineness. George Clooney on the other hand is extremely funny and self-deprecating (his relationship with his teeth is particularly funny). He is as shallow as Catherine's character, but much more likable, which keeps the film entertaining.

The art direction is charactertistic Coen Bros. - dark, but richly colored, making for a farcical ambience throughout. The jokes are wicked and clever as usual.

If you're a Clooney fan, you'll love it, a Coen Bros. fan, you might enjoy it, but a romantic comedy fan... well, you're probably better off going to rent a Meg Ryan film.

Summary: Quirky Fun!
Review: I loved this movie and I plan on owning the DVD. Clooney and Zeta-Jones are great and the movie is sharp and fun! It is full of quirky one-liners that I loved! This is classic Cohen Bros. material! Recomemded!

"O, Brother Where art Thou?"

Summary: A big disappointment
Review: This movie has the right pedigree - Coen brothers, George Clooney, throwback genre - but it plays surprisingly flat, its subpar script and forced performances pointing to the same issue: A general lack of conviction.

OK, Catherine Zeta-Jones is mostly on message, and Billy Bob Thornton gets into the right spirit. But otherwise the characters are thin (or just plain annoying) and the actors overcompensate by playing up the offbeat, perhaps thinking that quirkiness is all it takes to make a Coen brothers movie. The tone here is set by Clooney, who can't seem to decide whether he's in The Philadelphia Story or O Brother Where Art Thou? His broad touches might work better if this were a funnier movie, but here he's just trying too hard.

Though they wrote it - or at least punched it up - this script doesn't do the Coen brothers right. Alas, they seem to know it, and so do their performers.

Summary: Better than its reviews
Review: As a Coen Brothers movie (O Brother, Where Art Thou?), this is a 3-star movie but among all movies, it's a 4.

There is a lot that happens beneath the average movie watcher's radar here (not a slam of movie watchers, I wish I were less critical of movies I watch and I wish I could just sit back and enjoy them). The movie is very good and is VERY Coen Brothers.

If you're expecting a War of Roses movie, you'll like this better than you expect. If you're expecting a ha-ha funny movie, you'll be disappointed.

The best part of the movie is watching the characters par, dance, jab, avoid, and complement each other throughout the scenes.

Clooney is fun and he goes from slimeball lawyer to a likeable guy. Any movie that can do THAT is masterful! (Obviously this would never happen in read life!)

Summary: Quite 'intolerable'.
Review: I think the title of this fits it quite well. I find it amusing. I saw the previews for this on TV and it looked good, so I decided to rent it. I hated it from the beginning. It was really, really boring. I thought for sure that this was going to be a great romantic comedy, but I found nothing in this to be funny OR romantic. I noticed the chemistry between George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones, but they barely went anywhere with it. They had one 'romantic' scene and that's about it. I was left wondering what in the heck went wrong there. There could have been a lot more done with this movie, too bad they didn't take a different approach and have a great love affair between Clooney and Zeta-Jones. They are both beautiful people, but this movie doesn't do it for either of them. If you decide to watch this, proceed with caution. I would NOT buy this. Rent it, if anything.

Summary: What a BOMB !!!!!
Review: What a piece of drivel. I was really looking forward to seeing Zeta-Jones and Clooney in this movie because the previews made it look like they had great chemistry. Boo, hiss!!!! This could have been condensed into a half hour episode of a below-par sitcom.

Instead of more subtle humor, which might have helped this movie, the viewers are hit over the head with the silly slapstick.

It was so boring, so absurd, and the only good chemistry between Marilyn and Miles was in the scenes that were shown in the previews. The Coen brothers sure laid an egg this time around! Even all the stars in this movie could not make it palatable or anything but trite.

Summary: Great Movie
Review: I zipped over to Blockbuster to pick this one up last night. My Girlfriend and I were looking for a romantic comedy. Being the Cohen Brothers fan that I am, I quickly suggested this, since I missed it when it was in the theater. I don't know if it was the dinner or the wine, but she quickly nodded off, leaving me to catch this one on my own. I was disappointed, especially since she really like 'Fargo' and 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou?'

Make no mistake, from the opening credits with 'Suspicious Minds' overlayed, to Billy Bob Thorton in a daytime drama, this is unmistakably Coen. It has that Big Lebowski feel, a light hearted story with deeper meaning. In this case, it's the lovely interplay between George Clooney and Catherine Zeta Jones. Clooney plays a high powered divorce lawyer, while Zeta Jones plays a socialite that jumps from man to man to increase her fortune. Obviously, their paths cross. Clooney is 'fascinated' by Zeta Jones, and they eventually hook up. This movie really deals with the question of whether love is more important than money, and the nature of conquest. It's difficult to justify this being a great movie without giving too much of the plot away, but it's really worth your hour and 40 minutes. Just remember that the Coens are excellent story tellers, both as writers and with cinematography. So you get a wonderful tale with some wonderful imagery. And a cast of thousands.

Summary: SEXY and Funny at the same time....
Review: Now granted this is not on the "Top ten List" but it is still a laugh out loud movie. George Clooney and the lovely Catherine Zeta Jones have great chemistry. Cedric the Entertainer is the icing on the cake. "IM GONNA NAIL YO' A**" is his imfamous line. I definitely will recommend this movie.

Summary: This is an enjoyable film
Review: I would actually give this 4 1/2 stars. Contrary to what many of the naysayers have been complaining about, I found the chemistry between Clooney and Zeta-jones to be there. It wasn't quite up to the chemistry between Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn in "Bringing Up Baby", for example, although I found myself thinking of Cary Grant as I watched Clooney. Zeta-Jones is surely a modern classic as a leading lady in film. They both did their roles justice in this movie.

As for the plot, if one is willing to relax and go along for the ride, it is very entertaining. Lots of banter, some good humorous dialogue and situations, and a couple of excellent characters played by the leads. This isn't one of the Coen's best films by any means. Compared to many of their other films, it doesn't seem to amount to much. Compared to many other things out there which pass for entertainment, this movie is excellent.

If you like quirky romantic comedies and if you like the Coen brothers, you will probably be satisfied with "Intolerable Cruelty".

Summary: Just Awful
Review: Living in Kazakhstan I rely on reviews and the odd spot on BBC's "Talking Movies" to determine what I order online or have friends bring in for me. This was a film I new nothing about and a friend picked up and I chose to buy upon its arrival. I struggled through it and although its now part of my collection will never be watched again. Mindless and unentertaining is about the best I can say. If you really want to see this film rent it...I cannot for the life of me imagine that the principle actors and directors could have sat in a screening room watching this film prior to its release and been proud of it..Had I been able to send it back it would have gone the next morning..
