Summary: Great Movie
Review: I really liked this movie... (I don't say that about too many movies). I in no way am saying that this is a top quality award winning movie, but I found it to be entertaining and a good time. The plot spanned times mixing interesting history bits with character plots. If you have not seen it, it is definitely worth the time to check it out.

Summary: Great Movie
Review: I have enjoyed this movie so much. I didn't wanted it to be over. Great music, great story, created with the passion. I actually loved the fact that the stories were not closely related to each other. It's how the history works. There are some things that we may only suspect and never be sure.

Bottom line: You have to see it.

Summary: Beautiful captivating film
Review: Amazing story following the travels through time of a violin that has a soul. Those who complain that the stories are disconected miss the point that the conection is the violin, it's beauty of sound, and how lives are effected by this singular instrument. We travel with the violin, briefly in and out of the lives of those that play and cherish it. Wonderful soundtrack. A wonderful movie!

Summary: Very Glossy, Very Flawed
Review: I'm going to go against the crowd on this one, even if zero out of a hundred avid fans of this movie fail to find my review "helpful." The movie is beautiful to look at. Many of the scenes are masterfully executed, and a number of the performances are wonderful, such as that of the boy prodigy's teacher. Greta Sacchi, while she looks tired (as always)is very sexy (as always). The problem is the script, which presents several pointless stories that are too loosely connected. The central characters in each of these stories are almost always unlikeable, joyless individuals: the near-catatonic little boy, the politically oppressed Chinese woman, and the socially inept and angry-at-everybody "violin expert." Too many things are vague and/or go unanswered; the fate of Busotti's child, whether the violin was actually stolen at one point or given to the servant, whether the great violinist Pope commits suicide, etc. etc. In my opinion, even the "sting" ending is fudged and unclear, with the historical violin clumsily transformed into one of Hitcock's "Mc Guffin's," a red marble in a kind of high-stakes shell game. And the secret of the violin's color is ho-hum and, like everything else in the movie, pointless.

Summary: I LOVE THIS MOVIE!
Review: I LOVE THIS MOVIE!I am GIGANTIC fan of violins, and when I saw the movie title, I was instantly curious. From the beginning I was hooked. I don't care what anyone else says...THIS MOVIE IS THE BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME HANDS DOWN!

Summary: Lacking DVD for an absolutely wonderful film
Review: The Lion's Gate Entertainment release of The Red Violin is a stripped down DVD with no extra features whatsoever. How sad. I'd love to see cast information, director commentary and a "making of" featurette. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to know the in's and out's about how this wonderful film was put together. Maybe some day we will. It's annoying when studios put out a bare bone DVD, only to sucker consumers a year or two later with a "Special Edition". If that's what Lion's Gate has in mind here, then shame on them. There is another DVD version put out by Universal/MCA in 2000 which has basic extras like production notes, soundtrack information, and trailers. I believe it is currently out of print though. Anyway, the picture and sound quality on this widescreen disc are great. There are English and Spanish subtitles, scene selection and a trailer for the film (as well as other Lion's Gate releases). The film gets 5 stars. The DVD gets a 2. Hopefully this film will get the full DVD treatment it deserves in the future.

Summary: One of the greatest films of all-time
Review: This film is a fantastic story of the journey of a perfect violin. The story is told in stages and told through a prediction of the future (you will understand after you see the film). The unique way the film is told is very original and refreshing. The story mixes many elements into a flawless and highly enjoyable film that everyone can enjoy.

Summary: If you like artsy-fartsy stuff and violins...
Review: This is worth the purchase! It took me awhile to finally get around to this, but it's a really neat movie. Enjoy!

Summary: A beautiful story
Review: I really loved watching this film. The film begins with the origin of the violin, and the violin's history unfolds. We (the viewers) get to see what happens with each of the violin's owner and its final owner and destination.

Lovely, lovely film...

Summary: The Red Violin/Corigliano...5 stars
Review: Well, being the fact that the composer who wrote the score for this movie happens to be my teacher. I knew about the music/score ahead of time. The story is very deep... the violin survives for hundreds of years and the same melody is always played by the one tho has the instrument. I learned so much from this movie!
In fact, some peope don't know that musical instruments are worth millions of dollars according on who made them or who owned them. Thanks to my teacher i bought the DVD and it was worth it (my teacher won the academy award for best original score) and thanks to him I got to know the movie and the music.
it's a great movie to watch if you are into music or art.
