Summary: Cate is superb, the movie isn't
Review: Cate Balnchett give a bravo performance as Elizabeth I in this otherwise disappointing (and historically inaccurate) biopic.Nice cinematography, and some good turns by the supporting cast (most notably Geoffrey Rush) can't make up for the grizzly, almost sensationalistic nature of the script which seems more geared to attract American audiences then it does will telling a historical tale. Cate will survive this mess nicely. Look for her in the much better and criminally overlooked film "Oscar and Lucinda."

Summary: A "must-see" for history buffs.
Review: A wonderful movie for fans of Queen Elizabeth I. Cate Blanchett gives an extraordinary performance as the young Queen and Joseph Fiennes is admirable as Robert Dudley. Vivid in its depiction of the cruelty faced by Protestants under Queen Mary. Christopher Eccleston is wonderful as the arrogant Duke of Norfolk; he was an actor I'd never seen before. His performance alone is worth the two hour running time of this film. I've only had it a week and have watched it three times already!!

Summary: Good movie but not Historical
Review: I am an Elizabethian history buff. I have books and movies about her. I felt this movie was good but most things not true. Robert Dudley never betrayed her, yes he married in secret to one of her ladies in waiting, after his First wife died. Elizabeth did know he was married. They also never consumated their love she was a virgin. They also portrayed her as a weak woman at the beginning "she was never a weak woman!!" She was the greatest Queen England has ever seen or will see. It is another way Hollywood changes history to fit it's format. I have seen three people as the Queen,Kate Blanche, Judi Dench,And Glenda Jackson. They are all good but Glenda portrays Queen excellently.

Summary: Magnificent!
Review: This is a beautiful movie - artistically shot and wonderful to behold. Cate Blanchett's portrayal of Elizabeth is compelling and accomplished and should have received an Oscar. I do not understand the emphasis on the sex scenes, to my mind, there is no 'over-indulgence' portrayed, certainly not as much as Gwyneth Paltrow in 'Shakespeare in Love' - flashing her t*ts every fifteen minutes or so all in the name of 'art' (pah!!) - do not even compare this masterpiece to such a film. The historical happenings included in 'Elizabeth' are actual facts, only the 'timeline' has been altered to make the movie more intriguing, and seeing as how there are many conflicting accounts regarding Elizabeth I, I think that the film has done a good job. The music to accompany this film is so moving. I am fortunate to live in England, and Elizabeth has re-fired my interest in English heritage.

Summary: I wanted a bit more
Review: I was hoping to see more of Elizabeth's reign. I expected to see how Elizabeth purged England of her enemies and turned her nation into one of the great powers. This movie hardly covers any of that, and the most interesting part of her reign is only an afterthought at the end of the movie. Don't tell me "the next 40 years were really great in England." I want to know how she did it! Sigh. The acting was spectacular. I did find Joseph Feinnes a bit tiresome. There's only so many brooding come-hither looks I can handle from him in one movie. Does he have any other expression? The rest of the cast, especially Geoffrey Rush and Cate Blanchette, did a great job. Overall, the movie was not bad. But given the subject matter I was expecting a bit more.

Summary: Elizabeth rocks!
Review: Last year, I decided to watch all the Oscar nominees. I was hesitant to watch Elizabeth; I knew it was about royalty, which sets off alarms that I'll fall asleep about ten minutes into the movie. I pictured doilies, lace, and all sorts of "fancy" stuff that my male brain just can't grok. What I didn't expect was an intelligent movie with stuff my brain thinks of as "cool," including political backstabbing, violence, and general butt-kicking all 'round. But that's what I got. This is a cool movie. Watch it, already.

Summary: Beautiful film, superb visuals and sense of the period
Review: This is a great film. Beautifully acted and photographed. It gave a real sense of the troubled period when Protestants and Catholics were at war with one another for the control of the English crown. The superb visuals and sound require that this be seen on DVD or LaserDisc. I can't imagine that anything comes across very well on VHS.

Summary: Great movie, really, but it has some mistakes
Review: Elizabeth...really great and impressive movie.I enjoyed it very much. It's based on reall happened events.Everyone has ro realize that it's a movie about the early years of Elizabeth's reign. I've been doing some research and then I found a couple of mistakes in the film.maybe you can't call it mistakes, rather say they are there, because to make the movie more exiting. 1.Elizabeth always knew that Robert Dudley was married, later his wife Amy was killed.(by him maybe) 2.In the Tower: Elizabeth did not stay in a cold, dirty room, but in a special Tower for royal prisinors.They would never put royal people in other rooms. These are just a few, but they are only made because of the plot of the movie. I really enjoyed the movie and I read Elizabeth R, a book by Jean Plaidy, it's based on the tv serie Elizabeth R.

Summary: Great movie - Surprised by some other reviews
Review: This is a great movie, and captures much of the intrigue of the age. I was surprised by the vehemence of some other reviews, citing historical inaccuracy. While Elizabeths affair with Dudley is undocumented, many other 'inaccuracies' are based on one or other source from the time, which were often conflicting. This was an age of upheaval and intrigue, with Catholic and Protestant writings in fierce conflict as history was written and rewritten according to who held power. As an interpretation of one possible 'truth', it is truly engaging. Whether you agree or disagree with the detail, the key to this film is the mood of the nation and of court. This it captures outstandingly. As for too much sex, this was the age when prostitution was legal, and in London licensed by the Church as a source of revenue (the site of the Bishops Brothels in Southwark can be seen today, alongside the Clink Prison and Shakespeares Globe (reconstructed). Far from the British being above this sort of thing, we are obsessed by it (I speak as a native). Those who view Britain through 1970's drama series and the literary works of the Bronte sisters should really get out more.
