Summary: One of the most charming movies in years!
Review: Shakespeare in Love gives us a creative vision of how the Bard's England might have been. Though its characters are almost all fictional (with the exception of only two), it is so intriguing because all of the characters COULD have existed. The movie makes you feel as if you're having a backstage tour of Shakespeare's plays, his mind, and his very life. Whether you know nothing of his writing, or if you're the world's biggest Shakespeare buff, you will enjoy this charming, refreshing look at the people and places that may have inspired the Bard.

Summary: WOW! What else can be said??
Review: This is probably the most totally entertaining movie to come along in many years! The screenplay is wonderfully written and acted by a tremedous cast. Even if this isn't the way Romeo & Juliet came to be, it should have been! A MASTERPIECE!

Summary: Not overrated
Review: This film has one of the wittiest screenplays ever. Not only does it sustain the central conceit of the plot. It works on several other levels. The script is loaded with references to other Shakesphere works. Many of which require multiple viewings to catch. Take it from one who has read *ALL* of the plays that there is much to savor here. The structure of the plot itself is ingeniuosly crafted to echo 'Romeo and Juliet' but in subtle, indirect ways. This film is alive in every sense of the world. Anyone who refers to it as a chick-flick or flighty entertainment is not at a very high level of artistic engagement. As a matter of fact they are just at the level to be impressed by the banal platitudes of 'Saving Private Ryan'.

Summary: Behind the scenes of the greatest bard!
Review: Shakespeare in Love is one of the few movies that takes in depth the life of William Shakespeare and gives everyone a behind-the-scenes look at his life. An outstanding cast and crew truely took their time to define his work and actually understand the meaning of "Oscar Worthly". Paltrow 's performance was one of true heart. Her character touches me in a way that possibly touched many others. In many of her previous films we hear her "English Accent" but in this film she hits the note to deserve "Best Actress". Although the actual storyline is one that was made up, the costumes and props give you a real sensesation of that time period. The material used for the script was well written and constructed. Other outstanding performances by Joseph Finnes, Judy Drench ( "Best Supporting Actress" award), Jeffory Rush ("Best Supporting Actor nominee) Ben Affleck, and many many others. Besides the criticisms from the press about the "Best Film" award, Shakespeare in Love is one film undoubtfully in a class of its own from that of Saving Private Ryan. Kudos to the many people who took the time to really put forth a film that is absolutely wonderful. This is a movie everyone should see and enjoy!

Summary: BEST PICTURE OF THE YEAR!!!
Review: Shakespeare in Love takes you on a race through the various stages of the human condition. Similar to The Princess Bride, there are fights, monarchs, brilliant characters, and best of all, a look at true love that reminds those who have forgotten the initial moments of "the crush." Geoffrey Rush surprises and delights once again as he shifts into yet another character no one's ever seen him do before. Judi Dench is the older, ultimate destination of where Cate Blanchett's had gone by the end of Elizabeth; one look conveys every thought in her mind. Unfortunately, although everyone can ENJOY this film, Shakespeare in Love is for a smart audience. Don't go looking for easy audience pleasers here (ie gunfire, bombs, melodrama, CGI). Shakesperean references abound, and it will take the average student several viewings to find most. Tom Stoppard's script in nothing short of genius, adding another fine acheivement to credentials that include Rozencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, The Real Inspector Hound, and the unparalelled Brazil.

Summary: A treat for the senses and the intellect
Review: What a brilliant confection! In this movie we are treated to nimble dialogue, astonishing pacing, extraordinary acting, beautiful costumes and sets, and an almost painfully brilliant whole.

The movie is both comic and tragic, and manages to make the entire convoluted mess of the plot accessable, sympathetic, ironic, and engaging. The Bard would be proud!

Summary: Tom Stoppard does it again!
Review: Tom Stoppard, known for his treatment of Shakespeare's Royal Dane in the movie "Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern are Dead," has done it again with "Shakespeare In Love!" A witty tale of The Bard's life and times centering around the genesis of "Romeo and Juliet". Stoppard, not one for sight gags, depends on dialog to get his laughs. The characters are well deveolped and finely tuned as an ensamble cast, as is the case with Stoppard's R&G. Taking a snapshot in the life of one of literature's greatest figures, dusting him off and bringing him to life in a way that we hardly see anymore. I thought that this was Academy Award material at it's best!

Summary: Overrated!!
Review: SAVING PRIVATE RYAN is my all time favorite movie. When I watched the Oscar's and Shakespeare In Love won best picture I was pissed off! It was not a film that made you wounder, think, and sit with confusion like RYAN did. I saw Shakespeare In Love when it did a re-release in my city after the Oscar's. And at first I thought the opening scene was done damn well. Maybe it is that good. The film went down hill and up hill then back down. It was not that good of a movie. The Academy should be mad at themself for giving Shakespeare In Love best picture. A good movie, better than PRIVATE RYAN, no F***ING WAY!

Summary: My favorite movie EVER!
Review: Ive seen SIL three times and only once on the big screen. To m, it is everything that film should be. it is funny when it should be, charming in many places, captivating, beautifully costumed, but overall, you come away with a sense of wonder, like you had actually been in the movie with all of the players, experiencing what they had, waiting with them for what could come next. gwyneth paltrow was stunning and beautiful and convincing, and i thought she very much deserved best actress. i will watch this movie until the dvd breaks and then buy another one, it is that good.
