Summary: Thoughtful and complex
Review: Besides being gorgeous and well-cast, this movie impressed me by its thoughtful treatment of very complex and complicated moral issues and problems. It effectively demonstrated how good intentions and good principles can lead to disastrous results. The Mission highlights the difficulty in fighting for what you believe in and also draws attention to the difficulty of determining your method of "fighting". Irons is spectacular. Well-worth seeing. It avoids easy answers.

Summary: One of best 5 movies EVER made
Review: Although The Mission can be predictable, being able to expect what will happen does not lessen the utter heart-wrenching emotion it portrays.

The screenwriting develops so many important human issues in a capitavting[!] manner: 1) what is required to achieve forgiveness, what role does anguish play in that quest; 2) how should one "love thy neighbor" (i.e., the extent to which Christian evangelical paternalism has been both beneficial and damaging); 3) when should one question obedience/loyalty to authority (eccliastical or political - in this historical instance both overlapped); 4) is "technologized" an appropriate criterion for judging how "civilized" or how "savage" a culture is (and the hypocrisy of the common usage of the word "civilized"); 5) the destructive capacity of the values upon which the modern Western economic systems are based (i.e., greed, greed, and greed); 6) Perhaps most powerfully, what methods are appropriate for fighting for a noble cause? specifically, Ghandian or Jesusian non-violence ("turn the other cheek"), vs fighting to defend others ("holy war"). This last question presents a real dilemna for those like myself who are activists in human rights and social justice movements.

While DeNiro is quite good (as always) in protraying the tormented soul in search of redemption, Jeremy Irons is fantastic here - Irons should have won Best Actor, I think. Unfortunately, to fully appreciate what may be the greatest cinematography ever, one must view The Mission on the big screen, not video.

I found this movie so moving, so deeply disturbing and thought-provoking, that it is difficult for me to watch it again; EVERYONE should see this movie.

Summary: A mesmerisingly brilliant film experience
Review: This isn't just an excellent movie, it's nothing short of an experience that stirs your very soul. A masterpiece of cinematic art, it's unpretentious in its courage, raw in its rugged beauty and heart-wrenching in its honesty. Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro looked like two actors who transcended their performances and got enveloped in a real embrace of the movie's theme about courage and redemption whilst making this film. The powerful current of passion in this movie is beautifully directed and surges as the movie progresses, until its climatic ending which leaves the viewer both lifted and drained. A totally underrated movie by Hollywood standards, it ironically redeems tinseltown from the bulk of what it churns out these days. A very brilliant film that demands repeated watchings to further appreciate, not to mention an unearthly film score that's short of a better word, "HEAVENLY"

Summary: Outstanding film
Review: This would have to be one of my all time favorites, fabulous cast, outstanding scenery, great soundtrack. The spirtitual, verses political, verses cultural delima that this movie presents can't be ignored and will be hard to ever forget.

Summary: Poignant, heart-wrenching, and thoroughly entertaining
Review: Superior talents, DeNiro and Irons entertain, inspire, and educate via this most powerful film of base desire and instinct transformed to shining spirit. One of my favorites, I've viewed this film so many times I can't count and I never tire of the story, the action, the actors.

Summary: This was a movie that picked up as it went along
Review: The movie, The Mission, was interesting. The beginning the movie was very slow and kind of hard to follow. As the movie went along it picked up it's action and moved along more easily. The story line was pretty easy to follow although the characters were hard to figure out. They are dressed in different types of clothing then we are accustomed. It was harder to decipher who was who. Some of the characters were hard in figuring out what role they played in the church, but in the end it all comes together. I thought that Rodrigo and Gabriel both make valiant attempts in the end to save their mission. Overall I thought it was a fine film especially because it had a good ending that will stick with you for a while.

Summary: The Mission was a fantastic and tintilating film.
Review: The Mission by Roland Joffe was a great film that expresses the themes of forgiveness and redemption. It glorified the desruction and ignorance of the spanish as well as the efforts of the jesuits in fighting for something you believe in. The movie depicted following your conscience even if there are harsh concequences in the result.

Summary: A powerful and dramatic depiction of European expansion
Review: Father Gabriel and Rodrigo are a superb example of the people we need in our society today. They depict self- worth and redemption to the finest. I highly recommend this movie. This is movie that will show you the real deal of European colonial expansion

Summary: ACCURATELY PORTRAYS THE LIFE OF THE NATIVES IN LATIN AMERICA
Review: THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE THAT SHOWS HOW A MAN CAN CHANGE HIS LIFE AROUND. IT SHOWS THAT YOU SHOULD TURN TO GOD WHEN IN TIMES OF NEED. THE NATIVES TOILSOME LIVES ARE DISPLAYED TO US. THE WAY THEY WERE UNFAIRLY AND UNJUSTLY TREATED WAS DEPICTED. THE HORRID EFFECTS OF EUROPEAN EXPANSIONISM WERE ALSO SHOWN. ANYONE WITH A HEART SHOULD GO RENT THIS MOVIE.

Summary: A moving film for the spiritually guilty person.
Review: This film is one of the better religious movies I have seen. It encaptures the theme of forgiveness in a very touching way. After watching this film I felt inspired to find ways in which I could be forgiven. The Mission also encaptures the ideas of non-violence and social justice. If you are interested in European conquest and how religion was associated, then I would definatly suggest this film for you.
