Summary: Amazon reviewer has it all wrong.
Review: Zeffirelli's telling of the story St. Francis passionate and moving. There is an interesting parallel between St. Francis and the youth movements of the late 1960's and early 1970's: hope and belief. Graham Faulkner as Francis is convincing and his performance enduring.

Summary: A Poem for St. Francis
Review: Why did an affluent, wordly young man in 13th-century Italy forsake his legacy, marching naked with joy through the streets of Assisi? How did this young man triumph over his critical father, an incredulous town, and ultimately win over the papacy itself, becoming in time one of the two or three most beloved saints of all time? What it be like to leave behind worldly things, living entirely for your fellow man and the beauties of God's earth?

The answers to these and other questions await you when you purchase this video.

The movie is not a biography of St. Francis, by any means. As other reviewers have pointed out, it omits much in his life (like, for instance, the second half), and dramatizes quite a bit. But to the extent that St. Francis can have an effect on your heart, the movie neither omits nor distorts anything of any consequence. It is all here -- his love of nature and of nature's gifts, his dedication to the poor, his simplicity, and his overflowing goodness. By contrast, the movie has omitted all that is not essential to its essential portrait. It is a unified whole, a poem on a great life. (The screenplay was contributed to by Lina Wertmuller.)

The acting in this film is first-rate, including by the title character. Alec Guinness makes a brief but important appearance late in the movie. The cinematography is also excellent. The music by Donovan -- much cricitized by some reviewers -- is actually perfect, with tonalities and harmonies that are directly appropriate to this simple saint.

In sum, this is an outstanding film, and an outstanding cinematic experience. If you have the slighest spiritual leaning, the slightest desire to live with fewer worldly concerns, or the slighest curiosity about one of the most beloved of all religious figures, you will not fail to be moved -- perhaps deeply -- by this film.

P.S. I first saw an advertisement for this movie in 1970, around the time it was made. Thirty years later, I finally got around to seeing it. Even the trailer had an aura about it, that stayed with me.

Summary: Loved the movie!!!
Review: My mom made me watch the movie and I thought it was going to be really boaring. :-) But I really liked it. The music was cool and now I want to buy the soundtrack. I had never really been into the saint francis thing before but after watching the movie I am really inspired by his life. I have a little statue of St. Francis in my room now. Some parts of the movie were a little scary and strange but it's still cool to watch. I recomend this movie to anyone.

Summary: Makes you want to be a truly humble Christian
Review: Music is great! A character building experience, this film rocks. My niece said Francis is a cute guy.

Summary: Spirit soothing , beautiful movie
Review: Whether or not the history portrayed in this film is accurate, I could not say. I am not even Catholic, but have always been drawn to St Francis. The music and visuals alone are worth the watch and the (perhaps romanticised) protrayal of St Francis is in keeping with the quiet beautiful spirit he is known for. I have watched and loved this video for over 15 years and recently shared it with my 12 year old grandaughter, who loved it as well.

Summary: One of the top 3 movies I have ever seen
Review: As a young man, this movie had such a profound effect on me, that it is hard to put into words. I have to laugh at some reviewers who say the movie is too slow, yet one of the songs talks about "if you want to live life easy, take your time, go slowly" -- In today's hectic world, this movie is a breath of fresh air -- it reminds me of what it is to be human. It is a fine, fine example of the best in man - and unfortunately - the worst. I have personally recommended this film only to my best of friends. It's like a fine wine that I will only share with someone who can appreciate the taste. And it's taste is heavenly.

Summary: Where did the beauty go?
Review: I remember this as a wonderful beautiful and loving movie from the first time I saw it in 1973. ...The movie is slow, the acting is poor, the scenery is wonderful but the story was so poorly presented that it hurt. This movie is a real candidate for a remake. A wonderful story that could be presented so much more wonderfully than it was, even though in 1973 it seemed so good.

Summary: Afraid of being blasphemous
Review: Perhaps this movie means a lot to those deep in religion, but to a non-believer like me this is just a sort of poorly done religious propaganda with little artistic value. Zeffirelli admits himself that he felt so thankful to God after he survived a terrible car accident that he became a born-again believer. Therefore, he wanted to thank God and church for the miracle that happened to him by doing a movie on a religious subject. Another example of how a lack of critical approach turns out a poor, tasteless and boring cinematographic creature. Scenes that are supposed to be uplifting and inspiring appear just outright stupid and grossly overdone with tear jerking and sugarcoated vulgarity and banality. No surprise that it is not a very well known Zeffirelli film - he would not become famous doing some dull and dumb productions like this. The soundtrack is horrendous. I would not recommend to those who are looking for artistic value rather than a sermon.
