Summary: The BEST "Jesus" movie ever made... in my humble opinion.
Review: This movie is worth seeing if for no other reason than the way the writer(s) and director used the parable of the prodigal son to develop the relationship between Peter and Matthew. Obviously none of us know exactly what Jesus looked like, or how He spoke, or what it must have been like, to have Him look deep into your eyes--into your soul--but I'm guessing that this movie comes as close to the "real thing" as cinema can. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. This movie does it's best to drive that reality home.

Summary: The Most Important Film You will Ever See in Your Life
Review: While it is true that there are a few historical/biblical inaccuracies (Judas' motivation to betray Jesus) no other film comes close to capturing the Truth. This is more than a good film. It is exquisite! More importantly, watching this film can change your life! It is not an exaggeration to say that this film -- while made by humans -- has been used to God Himself to help people understand the Truth about Jesus, and lead them to a relationship with Him.

Summary: Very powerful. Ahead of it's time in story-telling.
Review: I'm not even religious, but if I ever wanted to perhaps explain Christianity to another educated person who was curious like myself, I would have recommended this movie. Even for film-making sake, the outstanding direction and story-telling were a tad ahead of its time. Not to mention the all-star cast. Almost every "heavy-hitter" is here, from all different acting backgrounds, which made this a treat to watch the complex clashing of acting styles that added to the movie, rather than water it down. This is a movie for ALL people, no matter their religious belief. Simply enjoy this for the story and the acting alone. Definately a keeper.

Summary: A Genuinely Spiritually Powerful Film
Review: This is overall the best film of the life of Christ by far. Okay, as a purist I can find a very few nit-picky details of inaccuracy, as well as the not so nit-picky detail that Judas' descent into greed and greed's motivating him to betray Jesus is obscured, if not illiminated. But the fact remains that this film is still extremely faithful to the Scriptures - more so than any other film about Jesus I have seen with the exception of the film "Jesus" (1979) - and even the 1979 Jesus film, which is letter perfect as far as text faithfulness to the Gospel of Luke is concerned, is only slightly more accurate than "Jesus of Nazareth". "Jesus of Nazareth", however, is based on all four books of the Gospel (rather than only one as with the 1979 Jesus film) combines information from the four books in very insightful ways, and above all, does a better job than any film in communicating the spirit of the story as a whole, as well as the spirit of each scene. The cast and crew do an excellent job of developing all the characters, especially the apostles, as real and individual people, not just props for the title role. This results from a combination of superlative acting, directing, and editing. Going beyond the scope of comparing this film to other Biblical epics, it depicts spiritual experience more realistically than any film I have seen. In scenes such as Mary Magdalene's repentence or Peter's repentence after denying Jesus three times, I have never seen a more realistic portrayal of someone repenting and praying through to a definite experience of salvation in any religious film produced by church groups. This film has actually inspired a greater hunger for Bible study in myself and in others. Every moment, every scene of this film is pregnant with meaning. I would venture to say that "Jesus of Nazareth" is not only a first-rate film; viewing "Jesus of Nazareth", almost in spite of its makers, is a spiritual experience itself. END

Review: sorry, I DON'T HAVE ANY COMMENT,BUT CAN ANYBODY TELL ME WHAT HAPPEN THE THE YOUNG ACTOR LORENZO MONET, WHO PLAY THE BOY JESUS. The database at actors.com don't mention him as if he wer're in the movie. PLEASE,GIVE INFO AND THEN PERHAPS BRING THE SITE UP TO DATE. It seems as if he was intentionally left out. In the gospel of luke the mention of him is brief,but a important part of the gospel this site included people I don't even remember as being in the movie,but I do remember the boy's beautiful voice. END

Summary: GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD BECOMES GREATEST FILM EVER MADE
Review: On it's 5th U.S. broadcast in 1987, TV GUIDE called "JESUS of Nazareth" 'the best miniseries ever made'. Absolutely true; it's also the best piece of film-making ever, be it for cinema or TV. Someone FINALLY got this story right-it is truly inspired(pun intended) from concept to casting to every detail-it's not only factually accurate, it's spiritually true(which is more important than even the best documentary-style approaches to this story). You don't even have to be a believer to be moved by this-I am a believer & am incredibly moved by it. Buy it, rent it, ingest it.-Chip Harmison END

Review: 'Jesus of Nazareth' is a famous film that a number of people know about or have seen. Most people fail to realize all of that doesn't matter because Jesus Christ never existed!! Jesus Christ is a mythological figure the church has exploited for hundreds of years and now the film industry has for almost a hundred years. There is absolutely no archeological or historical evidence that he existed. Even if he did exist, it would be highly unlikely he would have received that kind of punishment.
It is a shame that a con artists like these filmmakers are using this mythological figure to make millions of dollars. People have to start swaying away from the church and its manipulations and start looking at the hard facts. Jesus Christ and the crucifixion never happened.

Summary: Majestic version of Christ's life
Review: Majestic and beautifully shot with strong performances all around, Jesus of Nazareth lacks the overblown almost operatic production touches of Nickolas Ray's "King of Kings" but still manages to retain a sense of the importance of the subject through subtle, nicely wrought character touches. Although not completely faithful to the New Testament, director Franco Zefferelli embellishes in such a way as to make the story more dramatically compelling and interesting. The performers particularly Robert Powell in the central role all give strong, interesting performances. Powell's characterization is less bland than many of the other versions we've seen and, as such, makes the Christ come alive much more so for the modern viewer. "Jesus of Nazareth" makes a fine companion piece to Mel Gibson's controversial "The Passion of the Christ" focusing on different elements. The big difference between the two films, though, is the level of explicit onscreen violence. Zefferelli's film still shows what happens but with a more subdued touch (due to the constraints of network television censors as it was originally produced for NBC). Both films in their own ways tell what could be termed essential variations on the same great story. Their contrasting styles make each suitable to very different audiences.

Summary: "Are you the son of God?"
Review: I was five years old, when I saw "Jesus of Nazareth" at first. Since then I saw roughly fifty times. Zeffirelli' movie is really "The greatest told in the world". The fascinating Jesus-movie, with fascinating actors, with fascinating Maurice Jarre (the best), and with fascinating Zeffirelli. Robert Powell is the embodiment of Christ.The best Jesus in the filmhistory.(And of course Willem Dafoe) Olivia Hussey (oh my God!)is the perfect Mary.(And She was the perfect Juliet) Rod Steiger as Pontius Pilate is brilliant. Anthony Quinn as Caiphas is powerful. And Laurence Oliver(Nicodemus), and Anne Bancroft(Mary Magdalane), and Michael York(John the Baptist), and James Mason (Joseph of Arimet),and...but!the greatest is Ian Holm as Zerah. Simply gruesome. Zeffirelli, who directed the "Brother sun, sister moon" and "Romeo and Juliet", made the masterpiece. A six-hours Jesus-biography: wonderful, touching, and large-scale. My second favourite film.
