Summary: Solid DVD Player
Review: I have never had any problems with this DVD player besides a rare pause between seens (which I have seen on many DVD players of about the same price range/quality). Many people seem to be trashing this DVD player and maybe they have good reason, but I have owned mine for about two years and have had no problems with the unit or its ability to ready DVDs, CDs, CDRs, or CDRWs.

Summary: Looks nice! But think twice! I am not pleased.....
Review: I have top end JVC electronics and I figured this DVD player would fit right in and complement the system, but little did I know it would be a great disappointment. It looks terrific, but performance is disappointing. Many brand new DVD's played on the JVC tend to pause, sometimes even stop playing without resuming. I thought it was the DVD's, but then I played them on my PowerBook G3 and they don't pause at all, not even once.

Then there's the remote control. Yeech! As other reviewers have commented, the DVD player often doesn't respond to the remote. You have to be right in direct line with the player and not above it at all to get it to respond. I constantly shift the remote around to get the player to respond. I don't have this problem with my other remotes. And guess what? It takes two hands to turn the TV on and off because the DVD remote uses a separate and distant SHIFT button to control the TV power button. This is a relatively new remote and the numbers and letters are already starting to wear off the buttons.

Frankly, I wish I hadn't bought the player.

Summary: I love it!
Review: I never had a problem (knock on wood) with this DVD player. It is always consistent, and i like the options. Of course I am a electronic head, so i take special care of my equipment. I guess thats why i've never had a problem with it.

Some people will have problems with DVD players because they don't either keep it clean, or their DVD's are scratched up. If you take care of your equipment, they will last a loooong time. And i bought this DVD player when it FIRST came out ( i like JVC's), and it's still working like i just bought it yesterday. No complaints here!

Summary: DO NOT BUY A JVC DVD PLAYER
Review: I purchased both a JVC DVD player as well as a JVC receiver (both with dts) back in March 2000. Both products worked well for the first month but the DVD player has been a nightmare ever since. Within 4 months the player was displaying "no disk" despite having a DVD in the player. We tried to call JVC to troubleshoot this but there is no contact number (just a recording were you can find out a service center). When we took the player in, we were told that while it was under warranty, that didn't cover parts, which ran over $100. They also gave us a typewritten page of troubleshooting items, showing that this product had bugs. In addition to locking up on almost every disk within a month of having the item back, it is now showing "no disk" again. Needless to say, the troubleshooting guide isn't working. You cannot reach JVC to go over problems, they don't repair the item right and it is without question the worst electronic product I have ever owned. I think their (lack of) customer service would make an excellent case study for an MBA class.

Summary: So far so good
Review: I purchased the JVC-523 about 6 months ago along with a sony wega television and it has not given me any problems. I play mostly cdr's and dvd's. It sounds darn good with my sony str-DE845 and bose surround speakers, the sound and picture on DVD movies is actually incredible, I like my sound system better than the local IMAX theatre system. However, If you have an old TV with low resolution and no reciever don't even bother buying a DVD player, Why would you? I didn't give this player 5 stars because I hate the remote, but that is not really a big problem.

Summary: A great first DVD at a great price
Review: I purchased thsi JVC model DVD as my first DVD player mainly becauseof the perceived versatility. You can play DVD, CD, CD-r and CR-RWmedia on it, while most others in this range cannot play CD-R or RW.Also, you get the option of component, composite or S-video output!...I took a chance and have been quite happy. I have had someproblems, however, with some DVDs, though I think that is a functionof cheap disk manufacture versus DVD player problems. I have noticedsignificant puses in scene changes in movies like X-Men, but have hadno problems with most recent movies, and almost no problems with DVDsof non-new releases, leading me to think it is the disk rather thanthe player. The sound and video quality are excellent, and the unititself is quite nice after you get used to the color. I was alsosurprised by the lack of weight in the unit. I have had no problemswith the remote at all, and have enjoyed this player very much forabout three months now. END

Summary: Happy with JVC
Review: I recently purchased the XV523 from Amazon.com. The unit performs extremely well. I have it connected to my receiver (JVC RX1028) using the optical output and the sound quality is phenomenal! I have the video connected to my TV using the S-video cable and the picture quality is just as extraordinary! I read one of the previous reviews and have experienced none of the problems noted in the review and I have concerns about the validity of the person's claims. Another reviewer stated that he or she purchased the unit 6 months ago. This cant be true, the unit has only been out for 2 months. I think that the player performs exceptionally well for the price and would recommend it to any of my friends. In my opinion, JVC makes really nice products. All of my home stereo components are JVC including my TV and receiver. My receiver is the RX1028, which I noticed Amazon has for $499. I paid $799 at a local retailer when I bought mine in March of this year. $499 is a GREAT price! After my experience purchasing the XV523 from Amazon, I will start purchasing all of my electronics from them.

Thanks Amazon!

Summary: If you have a low end TV, dont buy a high end DVD player
Review: I see all these bad reviews against the JVC DVD player and I will tell you this. There is no problem with this fine DVD player. You will only have a problem with this player if you A. Have a low end TV. or B. If you have a low end VCR. The player works fine with my TV, but when I connected it to a friend of mines low end model TV, i saw the lines, and I saw the flashes but on my tv none of the above happened. The only problem with the player is the remote. The remote is horrible, whom ever thought the shift button was cute should be punished by JVC. If your in the market for a high end DVD buy the JVC if not get a ... Oritron, oh yea i've had both and the Oritrom went back to my local retailer.

Summary: very disappointing
Review: I spent a great deal of time comparing features and reviews of all sorts of DVD players before deciding to purchase this unit. The features that finally sold me were its ability to play CD-R/CDRW and VideoCD (since I have the necessary equipment to make these disc formats). Unfortunately, I don't believe the unit survived the shipping (I don't want to blame the manufacturer). When I received it, it was easy to hook up, and it even played a couple of discs without incident. However, on the third disc, the unit sounded like it was trying to shred the DVD (imagine putting a disc in a cuisine-art). When I finally managed to retrieve the disc, it was scuffed on the outside edges (at least it hadn't broken, although it sounded like it might have been) making portions (the trailer) of the disc unplayable. Thinking it might have been a warped disc, I tried another -- brand new, out of the box -- same thing! This was a double sided disc and the second (features) side was completely whacked (scratches near the hub side make it completely unreadable). That was it for me. I packed it all back up and sent it back. My second choice was the Toshiba SD-1600 and that's what I replaced the JVC with. Although it lacks the VideoCD feature, it's a great player and I believe (from what I could tell with the two discs the JVC would play) that the image quality if much better -- of course, this could also be related to the damage the JVC incurred. Anyway, right out of the box, I could tell the Toshiba was a more "rugged" machine. The case felt much more "solid."

I don't want to make this into an ad for Toshiba -- that's not the point. I think the JVC could be built a little better to survive life's little accidental jolts. I've received quite a lot of electronic products through the mail without incident -- this is the first item I have ever received that has ever arrived damaged! I'm sure it's a fine machine if it's babied and it is absolutely loaded with all the right features. I just wish I could report on some of those features. As it is, all I can say about it is that it damaged a couple of my DVDs -- it was "pretty" but it was "weak". I think JVC cut a lot of quality corners to bring this unit into a specific price range. What they don't realize is that people like me would have paid up to $50 more for the unit just to have the features it has -- that should be enough to put it in a better case (and put the jog-shuttle dial on the remote).

Reviews require at least one star -- otherwise, I would leave this review unrated.
